Ashes Discussion

Jack "10 runs an over" Leach still has a better test bowling average than Lyon. Just think about how bad Leach is for a second and let that sink in.

I'm not embarrassed nor am I really bothered he took wickets on day 4. I am happy whenever Australia beats England in test cricket, regardless of who plays. If the wickets were half as crucial as you suggest maybe he should have been a shout for Man of the Match.

You don't think getting a wicket when the partnership is well in excess of 150 isn't a crucial wicket? Given the game situation, 50 runs shy of being ahead in the game, about to take on the new ball etc..

You'd have to be looking through one eye to not acknowledge that was a crucial wicket.

I think you would have to be not looking at all.

Some good quotes from Street, I think he's got a future.

"Sometimes the harder you think about it and the harder you chase the selection, the harder you make it for yourself," he told 4BC.

"Going into that Australia A game, if you would've told me in three or four days time that all of a sudden my name would be brought up to open in the Ashes series, I'd be like, 'No way, absolutely no chance'.

"I just went out there to embrace what was a really awesome experience for me and to learn a few things and to step up to another level of challenge.

"I just try to make the most of every opportunity that I can get when I get a chance to get out and be in the middle. That's as simple as it is for me, from there the rest takes care of itself."

"The thing I've most picked up is the amount of self-coaching that goes on among what I've seen in international players," he said. "They understand their games so well that they are their own best resource."

"It's almost as if they use the coach to give feedback to them on what they want to see. Rather than the coach saying, 'Oh, it looks like you're doing this', it's like, 'Hey coach, can you keep an eye on this, this and this ... and it all should finish with X product'.

"No one's there to hold your hand when you're in the middle of the ground. So if you're unable to help yourself in the middle of a batting innings then no one can, unless you're coming off for lunch or tea. Being your own best coach is a great strength because it allows you to adapt and adjust very quickly."

Third highest Australian wicket taker behind Warne and McGrath.

Hey I was just saying if the wicket was so crucial he should have been a man of the match candidate.

I personally think that they were playing so poorly on day 4 they were going to lose those wickets regardless of who was bowling. They actually looked intent on getting out with some of the shots they were playing and the new ball was a few overs away. It could have been a rank half volley spooned straight to cover and you would still be here telling us how crucial the wicket was and how his bowling turned the test.

As I said before if you think England batted well on day 4 then this really is a pointless conversation.

This is Warne on Starc levels of nonsense.

As an aside, based on stats, Swepson was outperformed in the Aus A game by Renshaw. This ore not bode well for him replacing Lyon any time soon.

The way some people argue in here, if Renshaw out performed him in the same game, he should be considered to replace Lyon.

It’s one game for **** sakes and we all know Swepson takes some time to transition between white ball cricket and red ball cricket. Nothing to worry about in my opinion especially considering he probably won’t come into calculations this summer with them likely picking Marnus as the second spinner at Sydney instead of losing a quick or a batting spot.

The way he was neutralised against India last year is also concerning.

They also bowled him into the ground with 46 overs in the second innings. It was a massive effort and while he was poor it was equally as poor to expect him to carry that workload.

I was surprised he played last night. The massive workload was the reason he was injured last summer.

It was also his first long format game since April.

He really doesn't struggle at all to move between formats, last year was his best year, he played three Shield games and was bowled into the ground averaging 67 overs a game, then played the T20 games, then a 3 day game for Australia A- 31 overs, then into the hub and bowling 500 balls a week- then six BBL games in 14 days.

Still finished Queensland's top wicket taker in the Shield with 32 and only played 5 games and nine wickets from six games in the BBL.

February he was scanned for his neck vertebrae stress fracture and his workload was the reason. and massive pain in his neck- he moved through the two formats very well.

Could knowing his last injury was from workload be hampering him mentally? As in self-preservation and falling into bad habits you've mentioned of bowling too many different deliveries instead of long consistency

So if he doesn't get man of the match, it's not a crucial wicket?

How do you know who the candidates were?

I look forward to another one of your responses, they just make you look like more of a fool.

That would have to be in the grand final for most ridiculous thing ever.

Carey taking eight catches was crucial and he didn’t get MOTM.

Starc getting a wicket day one was series defining. He didn’t get MOTM.

Funny idea- games can have more than one crucial moment and not all of them get MOTM.
