If there's one obvious thing they all share in common, they're excellent ball runners and an offensive threat.

In Melbourne's case I would say their entire attack revolves around their speed from dummy half.
You need the threat inside the 20m as well... to me the play can almost run through the dummy half when it's inside the 5m.

When you watch the storm and see the ptb inside the 5m you can almost chalk up a try, because they work the ptb so well and the forwards are so good at recognising and knowing where to run to put themselves in a position to be a threat and force the defence to pay some attention to them.

If your dummy half isn't a threat then all your tries are dependent on backline movements, that becomes much harder when the defensive line can race up on your backline inside the 10-15m because they don't have to worry about your dummy half.

For us Turps offers next to nothing and his forced pass to Flegler was horrendous on many fronts. The play didn't appear to be on at any point. Conditions didn't warrant it, ptb speed didn't warrant it and the defensive line didn't warrant it, Turpin then didn't use any deception or try to disguise the play at all and decided to double down further by throwing a bullet pass to Flegler who had 3-4 defenders in his face.

A good dummy half would instead utilise Flegler's run as a decoy and send it out to the backline noting the amount of attention the defence put on Flegler and therefore how much space would be available to the backline.

Paix has shown that he can get over the try line when he's close, but I hope he doesn't become a one trick pony and go to it all the time, which he did twice in the final 5mins. Both times it was on, but it's not always going to be there at NRL level so he will need to find other ways to be a threat close to the line.

What was good on his actual try was the little dummy he threw to take Bryant out of the play and give him a clean run to the line, instead of just blindly running to space.

It would've been nice if he was able to put one of his forwards over the try line or create some space for some of his forwards. I think he gave it a go with TC down the blindside (I think it was Paix anyway), but it didn't really get close. The play was on, but he pretty well telegraphed it.

It would seem like Paix will be on the bench this year, mainly because Billy will likely be starting at 6, but it would be nice to see Paix get another full year in ISC to develop further.

He pretty well became one of Souths go to players last year, but if he got another full year in ISC they may start running their play through him more now knowing what he's capable of. It would be nice to see him expand his attacking play down in ISC for the year, but maybe getting 30 or so minutes in NRL each week will be helpful as well to start working out what works against NRL defences.

If he's put on the bench for NRL and then only playing 15mins or so a game, then I can't see it helping his development at all.

Wow. A lot of big decisions being made from trials against teams full of QC players.

Dobbo allegedly confirmed that Walters will be the Five-Eighth for Round 1 this morning on Triple M.

But, it is Dobbo.

Was off the planet for the whole of the weekend so missed the game. Had a look at some 'highlights'.

Before pre-season I was in the camp that Skip Walters was really just making up the numbers and keeping his old man onside.

Now I'm pretty comfortable if he starts in the 6 for Rd 1. I think his form has earned him first crack. Of course it will depend largely on who Reynolds thinks he's most likely to click with, but I'm now able to say i'd have no complaints if Skip ran out for the first game as our 6.

My biggest concern with Bubble-O at 6 is it's going to be hard for Kevvie to drop him, and let's be honest here: he might be our best contender, but we're not after someone who scrapes into the NRL; we're after a premiership winning five-eighth. That's why I'd like to see him on the bench, and stay there. Mam at 6, Billy to the rescue if it falls to shit.

Is he Cody Walker, Jarome Luai, Cameron Munster, Nathan Cleary, Keiran Foran, Daly Cherry-Evans class? Because Adam is here to serve his star five-eighth - who needs to be a match-winner in his own right - not babysit them.

I don't think so. I think he's just good enough to raise our standards off the bottom of the table.

Ezras defence doesn't cut it. Let him spend a full year in Q Cup perfecting his craft. At the moment, its Walters spot to lose. Kelly and Gamble really shit the bed on the weekend although Gamble was the lesser of the evil for the latter two. One thing is for certain, get Paix in there at 9 Kev

Walters/Paix 9/14 Probably start heavier on Walters earlier, and phase in Paix as the season progresses.

Gamble had a shocker, but he's still the starting 6 for mine. Barring another disaster run.
How is gamble the starting 6. No one from last year is owed any position other than Payne. Walters is the front runner with Mam right behind him. Walters said every position is up for grabs and pre season will determine that so if Kevin sticks to his guns. Gamble is 3rd on the order and will have to rely on Queensland cup form to regain that 6 jersey.

It's already been decided: Gamble is ruled out of consideration until he shaves off that jackass haircut. Let him blow up balloons at kids' parties until he can be arsed turning up for work looking like an adult.

Papenhuyzen gets away with it (barely) because he pisses from a great height over all before him. Gamble just pissed his pants on live TV.

Yeah Gamble just looks like an Eshay ding bat. Could see him turning up to training in red Nikes and bum bag across his chest. If you can't take yourself seriously, why should anyone else?

I know right.

It’s almost as if the trials are meant to be a way, beyond preseason training, to test unknown combinations, iron out creases and land on your final team for the season proper.

How daft.

A sort of ... 'trial' ... if you will.

Yeah they are super important, that's why all clubs field such strong sides.

People ruling players out from a poor 40mins in a trial game is just silly. Should Cobbo be in ISC round 1? He wasn't great in the trial, getting easily outpaced by a prop winger wasn't a good look.

You know what, you’re right.

You should email all the clubs in the NRL and tell them they’re all wasting their time and money playing pointless pre-season trials. Don’t stop there though, get in touch with all the other high-end administrators of sporting organisations around the world to let them in on your bombshell revelation.

RE: Cobbo. Maybe he should, who knows. Perhaps he picked up a niggling injury in the All Stars and needs time in Cup to build his strength and confidence back up.

If that were the case, wouldn’t it be lucky we’ve got these games that mean nothing to find such things out.

I'm glad it wasn't just me. I thought I was watching a throwback Titans game and it was Dave Taylor making a break down the short side.
Never seen a winger with a build like that before in my life (and that includes Wendell when he came back to Dragons)

spry is no slouch and Cobbo was very slow to react and couldn't reel him in. I'm more concerned with the way Staggs and Cobbo let their opposites get on their outside, when it shouldn't have been allowed.

**** the whole nepotism argument. He has support staff who aren't biased.

Walters will and should be the 6, no ifs or buts.

Turpin can play 20 minutes to start the game then head to the showers.

MAM should be given the odd injury cover game and slowly given a taste with a view to a more full-time role next year.

I wouldn't hate a 9/14 split with Paix/Walters and MAM as 6 but I do think it's too early to throw MAM there full-time. You need to feed players into grade slowly.
@Kimlo for coach tbh.

Good points.

Although, it was a bit like watching Mark Riddell take off down the sideline, at least that’s what I thought.

I was absolutely gobsmacked when Cobbo didn’t reel him at a rate like he was actually chasing Piggy. The bloke has got wheels, got to give him that.
