Ben Ikin:

“Payne Haas is one of the best players in the game so we will be doing everything we can to get an outcome that’s good for the club and hopefully good for the player. I’ve had multiple conversations over the phone and in person with his management.”
“He doesn't have issues with the coach or club that I am aware of."
“Payne is hugely respected by his teammates for many reasons and beyond that as an individual, I don’t think I have ever met anyone with the mental resolve that he’s got. His ability to compartmentalise is world class. His teammates know what he brings and they respect him as a person. While something as big as this can prove a distraction for many players, it won’t for Payne, because he has this laser-like focus to concentrate on what’s important, both at training and in games."
“We want to be at the table with his agents talking about his future sooner rather than later.”
“A season never happens in a straight line, it’s a whole lot of lumps and bumps and this is just another bump. The job for us is to make sure as football-department leaders that we keep a sense of stability while we work through this problem. This situation has happened and we’re doing our best to deal with it. We’re hoping the positive change that is happening at this club continues to happen and Payne wants to be a part of it.”

I loved the entire thing by ikin but this quote above made me bloody fist pump haha.
Honestly, I feel like we are once again becoming the best run club with him and DD there. Nasser and his posse have massively fucked up here thinking we are the bulldogs or tigers bcos of the results the last few years....

If Payne tried this about a year and a half ago, he would've either got the big upgrade or released, the old management wouldn't have been prepared to play hard ball

I read that as Ikin being less committed to keeping Haas here... which I'm ok with.

The wording like a solution that works for Brisbane and Haas... and hoping that he wants to be a part of it, etc.

Ben Ikin:

How good is it to see that HQ has balls. DD/Ikin are playing this so well. They've completely boxed Haas into a corner and protecting the club. Calling them out, whilst leaving the door open.

Anything Haas does from here, except meeting his contract obligations will continue to make him look like a complete fool.

The conversation behind closed doors is what really matters, if he sounds like he doesn't want to be here I'm sure the club will let him leave at the end of the year but I guess time will tell.

I'm generally on the side of releasing players, sure they win but it isn't good business to keep that loud noise around the team.

I expect Haas to be released but only after the club gets something out of the club he goes to

I care less about the impact on the Broncos of Haas leaving than I do about the impact on the game and the fact that teams like the Roosters can blatantly flaunt the rules and manipulate the system to buy premierships. They're completely ruining the sport. Makes me sick.

Do we even think a club is going to get rid of a worthwhile player in exchange for Payne Haas?

I'm just thinking like, if we tell the Roosters we will give you Haas if you give us Manu, if they actually thought it out they'd be stupid to agree to it.

He's still on his development deal- until he commits to the new deal he hasn't been moved.
I am backing him to be our number one fullback choice moving forward.

You can see the commitment he had to learning the position. He's been gradually building all the pieces he needs to be a complete 1. Give him a year and who knows where he'll be!

At this point he's ticking a new box every week and not going backwards. Can't rate him any higher

I agree, thought for Wynnum he wasn't going to be a good investment but has stepped up and made improvements. Some guys just need that challenge- how you pick them is beyond me but some players can do it.

All character. You need a decent judge of character in your top office.

I watched an interview with Hynes early last year with Matty Johns and I could tell at that point this guy was something really special because of where he'd come from and how he'd built himself up from getting knocked back.

Many of our players don't have that inherent toughness because we develop so many "up and coming" "next superstars". Their whole junior career they've been told they're it, they're next etc

These players Melbourne find in QCUP almost like the scrap heap, they polish them up a bit and all of a sudden they're looking like shinning treasure. These players have had to fight to be seen, been told they're not first pick.

They're the sort of players we need to find
