Tesi Niu

The entire team was gash last night, 1-17, all of them.

It's like anything though, the bloke who you rely on to make the try saver is the one who cops the blame. Same as when we had Milford, never mind we were asking him to attack from halfway on tackle 5, end of the day it's on him, right?

The team has to function collectively for us to see the best of Tesi, he's not Darren Lockyer, neither is Walsh and yes, the immortal TMM would've struggled just as much last night. We weren't even in the game after that opening 20.

I guess the question is, does the team function better collectively with Martin at the back, and the evidence so far this season seems to point to yes. If that's the case, had Martin been there last night, would we have started as poorly, would we have conceded those early tries, would we have been out of the game after twenty minutes? No one is saying Martin is an immortal, just that he brings something to the position that Niu doesn't - at this stage of his career - and that's mostly on the defensive side. Which, in that opening twenty minutes, may have been the difference between being six points down or eighteen points down.

There's a chance, of course, that it would have played out the same. But just as a team has an impact on an individual player, and individual player can have an impact on a team.

Since TMM has been out of the side....we have reverted back to looking exactly like the Broncos of 20/21....early 22.

In other words......complete and utter shit.

I've watched all 3 tries back, I don't think any fullback is stopping any of those tries. Especially a guy like TMM who is more of a 5/8 and not as athletically gifted as other fullbacks in the NRL.

The first try was a swift backline move, Tesi grounded the ball in goal which gave them field position but I think he's getting tackled in goal regardless, it was a great kick. Would've been a freakish play if he got that back into the field of play.

Second try, grubber with the fullback in the line. This is normal now, nearly every team puts their fullback in the line when the opponent is attacking your try line. He had to turn and chase, you think TMM is turning and chasing better than Tesi Niu in that situation? I certainly don't.

Third try, second rower goes straight over the top of Adam Reynolds, simple play. Nothing to do with Tesi.

Everyone putting words in people’s mouths. No one is saying TMM stops those plays. It’s just the easiest moments to highlight how poor his positioning is. If he’s in the right position and they score I have no issue.

That second try wasn’t a grubber and it was on the goal line defence. The defence were 15-20metres out and it was chipped over Tesi purely because they looked up and saw the fullback at a defender.

Sometimes I wonder if people even watch the game

Both the below were conceded tries but Tedesco has ran, following the play to either make an attempted tackle, or to shutdown the overlap (which Capewell dummied and broke through). Both were still tries but the positioning was great from the fullback.

Watch the highlights and see if you spot Tesi anywhere near the ball. He gives up on it as soon as it passes him.

The problem is simple, those that have hitched themselves to the Tesi bandwagon are incapable of admitting he's playing poorly. They would rather point to all and sundry, because admitting they've been hoodwinked is a far more painful reality. Once the lie captures you, the truth becomes too painful to swallow.

That's the thing about the majority who aren't hot on Tesi, we're all capable of saying he had a great game, but for all the Tesi defenders, it's everyone elses fault. But no, we're the ones who can't see the forest from the trees. It's those with divine vision that are seeing things differently; there's no correlation at all to us conceding more points and sliding down the table as he's been back in the side. I guess everyone just decided to down tools at that same time cause dunno hey?

The thing that baffles me the most is like, Tesi has maybe 1 good game for us? It's not even like Milf where he was able to string together a couple of good seasons that at least the rusted ons could point to. he's been average at best in just about all of his games, yet, he's this superstar in the making. On what basis? Cause Seibold said so?

Fullback is so so critical in the modern game. If your fullback is asleep at the wheel - the team collapses.

Modern ruck speed is so fast - you need a cattle dog out the back barking at the line to keep them moving. Its the ability to preempt and monitor whats brewing with the opposition in attack. If your fullback is low on energy, the rest of the team is low on energy. Their attitude to yell, direct and push is similar to the bloke that grabs you by the collar and drags you along to keep going.

We really shouldn't be judging players as complete failures when they are still more or less new to first grade. Someone like Dearden looks to be improving after finally settling into first grade. There's a decent chance that in the future Mozer could be struggling 30 games into his career too. And what happens if the honeymoon period wears off for Mam, and his inexperience starts really showing off?
I really think its too early to judge Niu, he has shown continuous improvement at least in the attacking areas of his game. His defence looks rubbish at the moment, but there's also every chance that in another offseason or another 20 games it could get to a reasonable level too.

He's been poor, he deserves to get dropped, but I don't think he really be judged as a failure until about 50 games or a year or two into their their 20s, and that applies to all players in these 4 key positions, as they have so many more things to learn.

These are fantastic examples. And I'm sure if you were to go back to our games where Martin was at the back, you'd see similar - he wouldn't always stop the try, but he'd be around the ball adding the extra man, making it more difficult for the opposition to get over the stripe.

And it's also not just whether or not Martin would be there himself to stop a try, but it's the direction and organisation mitigating things like those those yawning overlaps we keep seeing on that right hand edge ever since he's been out.

It feels like a burning desire to be able to say, 'I told you so', should Niu pan out into a great player. I don't know how satisfying that will necessarily be, given so many of us acknowledge he's got a good skill set and has every chance of becoming a gun if he sorts out his deficiencies.

He sucks, he has always sucked. People have such short memories, he hit his 2 game purple patch and a bunch on here say he will fight Walsh for fullback, and now back to business as usual.

He really is our very own Broncos version of Dufty. I think perhaps he tries harder than Dufty tho, less up himself. I need to remind myself though that he's only super young.
Yeah, I don’t think he has any attitude problem, but his application to defence is much like dufty.
