Cobbo: “I think he’s a nice guy but not a good coach”

How long does Kebbie have to prove he's more than just a good friend?

Now that Green has sadly passed and Flanagan is off the market, the pool of experienced NRL coaches is dire. Who are we supposed to settle on? Kearney? I'm sure that would go over well.

We may have no choice but to settle on another rookie, unless we can find someone decent from Super League.

IMO, they'll chase someone with premiership success in England. if they can't get someone with NRL experience ... although if they wanted Flanagan they could get him, most assistants have get out clauses if they can get a head coaching role

hell, maybe they'll pinch Kristian Woolf from under the nose of Bennett (& the Phins) and give him an NRL start a year ealier than if he stays with the Phins ... or Maybe they'll go with someone like Rohan Smith, who seems to be fairly highly rated and is going pretty well in England.

may be a moot point discussing it though, really depends how Kev and the team starts the 2023 season.

If what Cobbo is saying is anything to go by (and you have to take his comments seriously, despite him clearly being an idiot. It's no lie that Walters has plenty of question marks about his coaching ability and he's absolutely echoing sentiments some in the playing group share), then we will know within the first 10 rounds. Getting Penrith and NQ up first is proving to be the last thing Kev needs right now, because back to back losses to start the year will set the tone at a very poor level for him.

If I were a betting man I would suggest Kev will not be coach come the end of the season. It's almost getting to the point where the likes of us should be less concerned about how he is going to go and more about who the hell it is we are gonna get to replace him.

Dont think Flanagan is totally off the market i dout manly would stand in his way if a head coaching gig popped up

Woolf for sure would be a good option but unlikely. Could probably snag Shaun Wane as he's finished WC duties now. Brian Noble is gathering dust after wolfpack went under and probably wants somewhere warm to retire.

Farrrk, the Wolfpack. Now there's a certified Greek tragedy to come out of the COVID years. It's hard to believe now they had SBW on their books once upon a time.

By bet is by R10, Kev’s fate will be decided.
I had high hopes of Kev when he took over in mid 2020. I am gutted that we’re still deep in darker periods as a club.

Read some time ago, where one of the better coaches, think it was Bob Bax, said - as a coach you need to gain the respect of the players to a point where they not only want to go out and die for you, they are prepared to go out and kill for you.

Kevin has a player who wants to poke him in the eye during pre-season. Ouch!
Perhaps Selwyn is showing a lack of maturity and judgement or perhaps only doing what his manager told him to do. Clearly he is also showing no respect and I assume he no longer wants to be here or more precisely- coached by Kevin.

While other players are giving the finger to Broncos culture, I fear it’s going to be a long and frustrating year ahead for the club and it’s fans.

Perhaps not so long for it’s coach.

Something will have to give but first, @Big Pete can you please forms in and talk some sanity to us? I haven’t felt this annoyed about the club for a while and it is hard to be rational on the back of such disrespect being shown by a club favourite.

If we do go looking for another coach, my pick is still Adrian Lam.

I don’t think the club will go with Flanagan and all his baggage after the mess the last five years have been.

Other options are Shaun Wane, Brett Hodgson, Jason Ryles, Justin Hodges, Rohan Smith. Any of these guys would jump at the chance to coach the biggest league club in the world.

The term “dumb as a box of rocks” comes to mind.

I'm more inclined to see it as a kid trying to speak "on the level" with the podcaster and airing a bit more than he should've. More naive than unprofessional.

Having said that, he's only saying what the majority of the forum thinks anyway - that ultimately should be the bigger concern.

Everyone needs to settle down and wait until McHunt comes in and tells us what to think about this.

I think change your vote here:

The press already has it. No byline.

Most of the piece is context, going back to Gamble's comments and Reynolds' defence of Kevvie. This quote was clipped.

Cobbo:

“I reckon he’s a good person. He’s a good person, like a good bloke but I don’t think he’s a good coach. He’s not the best coach but he’s all right. I feel like he’s just a good person but I don’t reckon he’s a coach. Even though he experienced footy, been through all the grand finals and all that, but I feel like he’s not a coach. But he’s a good person, a good bloke and does a lot for the club. But the way he coaches is a bit weird, I guess. He’s a good person though. He’s an alright coach.”

Kev's into his 3rd offseason with this team, if the young blood are admitting this stuff (stupidly) publicly then this should be setting off massive alarm bells for the senior management.

Cobbo deserves a clip around the ears for sure, but Kev's gotta go if there's any substance to this and multiple players feel this way. Kev's been critised as a coach before and it was a surprise to many that the broncos caved to the old boys when they picked him in the first place as he hadn't done enough to justify the post in his past coaching gigs.

People in here saying to sack cobbo, get a grip guys. Footy players are generally only at this level due to their physical abilities, the stuff between the ears is more 'nice to have'. Rugby players and saying dumb shit go hand in hand and has done for as long as I can remember which is before the broncos were ever around.

He probably was giving the phins a decent look, given the shitshow at the broncos with the dud head coach and it's hard to blame him if there are serious problems at the club.

Kev has had his picks of coaching assistants pulled away from him because the head office knows there's problems there. They are trying to surround him in help to get the job done - but the writing has been on the wall for a while. Kev was recruited in Sept 2020, results need to start now or he can **** right off.
Sadly for the Broncos and Kev you are absolutely on the money and I think its up to Dd and Ikin to handle this swiftly if and or when the time comes.

How has this not blown up in the media?

Long interview, goes on to say how he wasn’t fatigued but had personal issues and that’s why he didn’t play. Says he left games early when we were losing, that groups in the team had falling out (likely due to Payne haas) and that he wants to play fullback.

The most telling was when asked if he thought kevvie was a good coach and he said “I think he’s a nice guy but I don’t think he’s a good coach”.

What are the cliques re Payne Haas about?
