With that Khan-Pereira try, the NRL has changed their stance in regards to contact and as long as there's no clear separation and the player has maintained some form of contact/grip with the ball the try will be awarded.

It's why Te Kura was allowed to retain possession, which the Broncos eventually scored off the back of in the first half.

I thought the side-on view was inconclusive and that was enough for Klein to stick with the original call.

I am not taking any stock in the last 40-50 minutes of that game, we rolled out our reserves and it showed. The first 30 was pretty impressive. I'd say the team is starting to take shape but the question is, do you go for Mariner round 1? He seems too good to be in Q Cup now. Do you play him instead of Cobbo? I doubt it but surely he is under serious consideration.

1. Walsh (best on ground tonight)
2. Oates
3. Staggs (watching his back with Mariner there)
4. Farnworth
5. Cobbo/Mariner
6. Mam
7. Reynolds
8. Flegler
9. Paix
10. Haas
11. Capewell
12. Riki
13. Carrigan

14. Walters
15. Taupau
16. Jensen
17. ?? (This spot seems really up for grabs from any of Bayliss-Brow, O'ofa?, Piakura or dare I say it and hey, maybe he's ready because he was excellent yet again - Te Kura)

If they choose to be consistent with it, hey why not but we all know they won't be.

I thought Mam was pretty quiet, looked a bit slow too.

The blatant titans knock on the ref let go in the tackle before was worse, even the players were surprised he let it go.

After that game I would play a full strength team next weekend against the Cowboys and give 4 players 1 last chance. Smoothy, Mariner, Te Kura, Piakura I think they all showed enough tonight to get 1 final crack.

Smooth wasn't amazing but I still think he looked our best half with solid defence and good ball movement from dummy half. Mariner has got a big future ahead of him and will definitely see some NRL this year. Te Kura showed some maturity tonight for a young man and played well. Piakura played better as the game went on and just needs a bit of experience to unlock his game.

Amazing the difference in opinion on the dummy halves.
I thought Smoothy was the pick based on what I was looking for.

Crisp delivery off the ground, accuracy and width of pass.
Not that he got much time in the position.

Walters looked the same last year.
He does see the space but hasn't got the wheels to take full advantage.

Sick of editing this btw. I put in a comma and get massive spacing. Its been happening for a while now.

Smoothy showed nothing tonight, not a single thing.

With big minute players in Carrigan and Haas you could probably carry te Kura and ease him in, Kobe probably takes that spot when he's not injured.
O'ofa atleast deserves a development deal if he hasn't got one already

He had good quick passes off the ground exactly what you want from your dummyhalf and worked hard in defence. He never done anything amazing for the highlights but enough to show he's NRL ready.

I may go against the grain a bit here, but I think Piakura might be our most overhyped junior in the last decade. I've seen absolutely nothing from him that says he'll be anything more than a middling first grader.

It's hard to argue, at the time we had to fend off the likes of Canterbury to re-sign him and he's barely even cracked the first grade side, even on an extended interchange.

I recall Barrett saying something along the lines of "they've got a good one" when he conceded that Canterbury wouldn't be signing him however years later, we're still waiting.

I think we just need to spam the hell out of him in q cup, we have to get consistent game time into him

He was a bit clunky and off with attack tonight but defended like a champ and that's the main area he needed improvement. It won't take long for his ball game to come good with Reynolds coming back.
