We have lost so many players to crazy bids from other clubs and sports over the past 25 years.

Payne would be a huge loss but not much we can do about it and NRl won't care.

I am concerned that if we lose Haas with Flegler we will come right back to the field. While historically our issue is the spine he is more important than ever in our sets. Not much out there to replace him either. Most good props are locked away long term.

You just can't replace Haas... he's a one of a kind player at the moment.

We will just have to make sure we spend the money wisely if we do lose him.

either Haas and his manager have significantly smartened up over the last 6 months or the media didn't get the comments they wanted.

even the comments for Haas' father were hedging his bets. he talks about the union interest, then about how big it would be for Payne to win a premiership with us.

Except I'm saying it WOULD corrupt the system for the NRL to subsidize a Broncos player, rather than contend they should. It would be unfair to other clubs.

I can't read the article but they could do something like 50% off any union signing in the first year, so it's an even field for any NRL clubs.

Nah Tigers would definitely be given $1.5m to lure ... um... Pocock ... is he still a player ... are there even any players that are worth raiding from ARU??

The only mechanism that could possibly be fair is one in which the NRL pays the difference between the maximum bid by an NRL club and the maximum bid by any outside code. I guess that could work in theory. It does open a door to spurious rugby bids inflating their pay packet.

He is really enjoying his rugby league and not worrying about anything else in a signing sense right now.”​

This isn't actually a new idea.

pre-Vlandy's there was a salary cap discount for recruiting players from union.

I don't think it was unlimited though and IIRC, the players coming from union had to be under 21.

I'm pretty sure it never actually got used by any club.
