2023 State of Origin Discussion

I don't think it was the correct decision IMO. It was correct as far as precedent goes (particularly with, as mentioned above, what JWH and NAS get away with), but it makes a mockery of the "duty of care" in regards to concussion risks. For Qld's sake I am glad he's not suspended, but I don't like it.
Api has his own duty of care IMO. That was piss poor technique, pure and simple.
A bloke who is 5'9" just should not be going into a tackle that way agaist a guy who is 6'4"and expect the ball carrier to take it easy on him. It's different if Tino leads with the elbow/arm but he had the ball tucked against his chest and braced for impact. 100% good decision at which I'm gobsmacked TBH with the way the NSW media went at it. Not one of them addressed the tackle BTW just kept referring to his previous incidents this year.

What did he do wrong? Api got his head in a bad position.

Tino deliberately and forcefully strikes with his forearm. I don't care that he's tall enough that his forearm end up being the tackler's head height, you can't use that excuse when making a tackle.

pretty easy to not hit someone in the head keep your elbows at your side he literally pushes off with his forearm

Yep, the NRL has a placed a high expectation on tacklers and they are punished pretty savagely for any high contact yet attackers seem to get away with it.......makes a bit of a mockery of their player protection stance IMO.

He didnt hit him with the elbows though... it was his forearms.

And if you're suddenly outlawing any player to brace themselves heading into contact then you are removing duty of care for the runner... there will be broken ribs every game.

There are other props who go flying into contact basically as a shoulder charge into the defender.... Olam on Reece in the one they charged him with, Bounty Ofoa every hit up, etc.

CS9 went in with the catch and wrap method every game of his 400 game career and never got knocked out... it was shit technique from Reed and Api

The whole "Panthers combination" and "Souths combination" are the absolute proof that NSW don't "get" origin.

The point of Origin is picking your best players. DCE and Munster are hardly the combination you're gonna choose if you hadn't watched them play together. You pick the best player for the position and stick with it. If they're the best they will make the most of their opportunities in the game. I like to think about Turbo and Latrell in the centres. That was clearly picking the best players because they make shit happen.

Pick the best 2 players in the halves - for mine that's Nicho and Walker. Of course Walker is injured now, so possibly it's Nicho and Luai. If Either of those guys go down then you partner them with Reyno. Simples.

not bracing for contact you can do that with your elbows at your side he literally pushes out and at the head with his forearm not really bracing for contact, just coincidence tino has made contact with the head on different occasions?

Yep, Penrith may have been dominant over last few years, but it’s against club sides, not a qld origin side.

I called him out for something similar a week or two ago, thought he was lucky there too.
I thought he was very lucky to get away with that one tbh.

I'm genuinely not sure what he was supposed to do in the Api situation though. Bad technique from Api IMO...needed to go lower, he made contact with Tino's ball carrying arm. Not sure what Tino is supposed to do there. In the Reed one, it was the other arm that did the damage.

so what are the chances that Welch gets ruled out of Origin 2 for a hip drop?

After that performance from the Sharks, I wonder if Reynolds firms for NSW selection...

Apparently Moses is now favourite for 7 because Gus rates him, if that is true Fittler is useless.

So what does Fittler actually do??

Bases his picks on others decisions, has been using the panthers system, crap coach, cooked selections when he does make one.

Is he a Qld plant 🤔🤔🤔

Fittler doesn't know what to do and you'd be a brave man to suggest has ever known what he is doing, in a coaching capacity.

The bulk of his team selections over the years have been combinations from club level, it just doesn't work in Origin.
