Corey Oates - What to do?

Huge Oates fan, right here. However, like many of you, I can’t see how he gets back in?! I think Mariner and Arthars are a better fit for Briers Broncos. The way we attack, the speed and agility that’s needed… sadly, very sadly it’s not what Oatsey brings. Would love him to stay and always be a Bronco!
losing Herbie changes quite a bit though, last year Oates even slightly had Herbie when it come to the workload of outside backs, he has been unlucky with injuries and when your out of sight it's easy to forget the contributions.

He is slow though no doubting that, but when fit he is basically To'o with more size.

I know, I know. Agree with those points too. My heart says 💯 come back in, get your 300 games and overtake Pearl as our greatest try scorer. Then my more objective side kicks in and says have a look at this year and did we need him?!

I’m wondering if the 2015 GF played in part in selections. I mean, on one hand I’d really hope not as it was sooo long ago. On the other, those final minutes scarred me when Oates left his wing (as he tended to do a lot over the years).

Him coming in on the GF did cost us the game. He has done this all through his career and he doesn’t have the speed to get to the player in time for it to be effective. Unfortunately for us, Staggs seems to do the same thing and comes up empty quite often.

I don't agree. Oates only came in because Reed had a busted shoulder (shoulders?). Otherwise he would have 100% trusted Reed to cover Morgan as he was an excellent defender and we weren't actually short for numbers. The bigger issue was us not staying up as a unit. They were about 30 metres out, the middle ran out to put pressure on but missed, but the whole team should have moved up and held their ground. Instead for some reason they all went passive and ball-watched. I still have PTSD, watching it unfold and thinking "why are they just backing away and letting him run?!?!?!?!?".

All of the above might be true, but all that needed to actually happen is for the current Fox expert C.Parker to take JTs head off in the lead up. Penalty 30mins out with Parker in the bin (maybe).
One last play and they have to roll the dice against a set defensive line. Can’t take the 2. One play, bat the ball dead, Broncos win.
Anyway….the cowgirls can get fucked.
LET IT GO.

As much as I love Oatsey, I can't see a place for him barring injuries. He's a great first drop replacement, but is he willing to potentially sit in Q Cup for large parts of the season?

As much as it pains me to say it, I hope he gets a good money offer and plays regular first grade somewhere rather than fading away in Cup. I wonder if England could be an option for him?

Oates was one of our best in 22, Reynolds was on record saying he was our best.
He's had a injury hampered year and he would be wearing the number 2 jersey this weekend if he had the time to find form and get match fitness up after coming back from injury.
It may seem like we haven't missed him but that's because we've gone so well this year

The biggest concern for me is that he's become quite error prone, particularly under a high ball close to our line.

2 minutes to go - the riff are up by 4 points and both teams are down on troops as it's been a war of attrition. Another HIA means we're able to trigger our 18th man. In steps big Oatsey and they launch that play where he runs from the wing across the forward line and goes in untouched under the posts to win it for us.

"We've got the teamwork, to make the dream work"

Do it!!!!

If it wasn’t for Drinkwater tackling his face he’d be in #2 for sure. Such a shit tackle and completely set Corey back.

Farcical Drinkwater would’ve been Dally M winner if not for the tackle. He should’ve been made to sit out as long as Corey had to.
