2026 NRL General Discussion Thread

NRL 360 were saying because he has a contract with the Roosters he'll still get his cash ... But because it hasn't been registered with the NRL yet, the Roosters could just make him a coach, and not have that contract counted on the salary cap
If the contract was registered then DCE would still get his cash and it would be in the salary cap... unless he mutually agreed to walk away with nothing or was medically retired.

The talk was that it hadn't been registered with the NRL so rorters wouldn't have to pay him anything, but "Uncle Nick is a man of his word".

They suggested he would just become a halves coach straight away instead... but I dont think they'll be paying him $800k or whatever his playing salary was to be a coach... so if DCE retires he's walking away from a huge amount of money.

Im sure Uncle Nick won't compensate that in any other way though... maybe they'll talk it through over a friendly game of golf

Is there a problem with him being paid a stupid amount to be a halves coach if he never actually played for them?

I thought the idea was to stop someone retiring and becoming a glassy at the leagues club for $400k.

Surely you can’t just not follow through on a contract just because the player has turned to shit. That’d be like a player you’ve just signed doing an acl six weeks before the start of a season and you give him an under the table cashy to “retire” or go overseas.
If there’s no contract though, it just becomes a moral issue.

I mean dragons did exactly that with Volkman a year or so back.

Said they'd sign him, he got a release from wahs failed his medical with dragons and they pulled the contract.

If the contract hasn't been registered with the NRL then it doesnt exist

I dont think there's anything the NRL can do in this instance with DCE if the contract hasnt been registered with the NRL.

If it has and he then retires whilst agreeing to walk away for nothing.... rorters can't then hire him for $800k as a halves coach... all of that would go on the cap.

It basically happened with GI when he retired at souths.

I dont think it was a medical retirement (so no full payout off the cap), and instead there was a mutual agreement to no settlement or something... souths then hired him for like $150k as an ambassador, but that money went back on the cap.

The only time money can go back on the cap is if theyre hired within the original contract length... DCE doesnt have a contract length at the moment.

The sticky point for this one is IF DCE has signed a contract and rorters just haven't lodged it with the NRL... DCE could probably go after them legally for lost income if they just throw it in the shredder.

That would all be settled outside the cap though... and DCE wouldn't do it anyway because Uncle Nick will give him some kick backs for not taking up the deal.

If a contract has been signed and there is no clause in the contract that would allow it be rescinded then it's legally binding. Chances are all NRL player contracts have a clause it's only in effect when registered with the NRL so if it's not registered then it's null and void.

Meanwhile DCE will be Uncle Nicks golf coach. They'll play a round of closest to the pin every week, winner takes all.

The contract is still legally binding the registered with the NRL is to play in the NRL not make the contract legal.

Will Hopoate signed an extension with the Eels for three years; they didn't register it because they changed their mind, and he sued them and got a payout and went to Dogs.

The payout wasn't counted on the cap.

Saw that clip last night, cracking line haha. I mean, it really is indefensible...you signed 2 ****ing contracts, don't blame the people that caught you. I wonder if he'll talk about the whole Brett Stewart saga...

Not now, players have lived through the Storm saga and know better, but I think 20 years ago it would have been doable.

We know Waldon had Mimis, Moses and Riolo doing some of his dirty work. I can easily see a situation where Waldon plans his cheating, and does up two contracts, gets the manager on board- Manger to player-mate you just need to sign this please, Storm just made those changes we talked about.

Sure Isaac. One goes in the manilla folder, and one goes to the NRL.

Naive yes, ignorant or maybe even suspecting something but not wanting to think it or thinking you can't be right and talking yourself out of it.

What I have never got is why have the two contracts? Why not just write nothing down and give someone a boat or pay for their reno.

Because the players obviously wanted it in writing, so the club couldn't renege. Who knows if they'd been offered shit before and the club didn't come through? Also, the amount they were over the cap would have to have been more than just boats and renovations. There were obviously two different dollar figures on some of those duplicate contracts, and the players would 100% want those (higher) figures in writing. As would the managers, even moreso, they'd want their cut of the whole deal.

Good interview with David Gallop on face to face talks a fair bit about the salary cap scandals with Dogs and Storm.
The Storm haters will bust a lump over it.

I see Kev wanted to bring in CONEHEAD, Te'o and Barrett for his Kangaroos tour and NRL has blocked it.

Interesting that Te'o and TBaz were his first options...

Yes ya gotta laugh. As predicted.
CONEHEAD was going in a Cultural capacity too. Junket in other words.

Good for you Kev. Brilliant news.
Hopefully this gets the thorn out of Gordies ballsack.
Kev is perfect for that position, a coaches job that doesn't require him to coach just be himself .

Wonder if there will be a free trip for Gordie in it?

Billy could be the bolter to make the tour.

So given that Kev seemingly got his gig by the skin of his teeth, I’m not surprised his “cULtUrAL LiAiSoN dIpLoMAt” proposal for Gordy got knocked back..

Lots of conflicting stories out there about it but apparently they want him to choose staff from the Super League? Adrian Lam etc I guess?
