2014 Halves Pairing

Wallace can NEVER be accused of having no heart !!!

Is he what the Broncos need at half back ... NO
Did he lack heart or commitment to the Broncos ... NO

He is a tough SOB, that always gave 110% to the Broncos ... but he is not a natural half back and probably should have made the move to hooker early in his career.

Back end of 2012 he lost his creativity. Then, when Hook finally chopped him from 7 he lost all heart. I used to be a huge fan of Wallace's! I defended him a lot. Then I took a closer look at other halves in the competition and realised he wasn't anywhere near as creative as what he used to be and his vision had dried up.

He is a great defender. I agree that he is a tough SOB. Him moving back to Penrith will hopefully re-ignite something in him he seems to have lost. With Jamie Soward taking the creativity role, Wallace won't have to do much and just be a solid player. Suits him. Brisbane needed a play-maker and he just couldn't do it alone.

I agree, Marty. My final verdict on Wallace is reserved until I see how he goes under a new coach. He played good football under Bennett and Henjack. I rate Ivan Cleary - he seems a lot more interested in genuine attacking football. Griffin tends to rely on individual brilliance too much rather than having a game plan that suits the team and that is best designed to get points. Time will tell, but I think the best of Wallace is yet to come.

I disagree with this... I am about to send shockwaves through this forum, but i think Griffin over coaches :|

I think the broncos rely too heavily on set plays because they haven't had an instinctive play-maker who reacts to defense. Exposes them.

That is the player we need. And have for a while. And it's who we need to inject next year to partner Hunt. Either someone strong, or someone really quick.

Am I wrong?

I dunno Marty, I never really got a sense that we were working towards a plan in attack. Apart from the left hand side with Norman chiming in to set up Reed and Hoffman earlier in the year. There was also that useless cross kick that we persisted with in the opposition 20. I would be screaming at the tele saying 'how bout a grubber kick? Chip and chase? C'mon Wallace! ANYTHING but that cross kick that half the time the winger didn't even know was on!'

Until Hunt was starting, our only creativity came from Hodges tying to spark something.

i agree with this but I think it was because we had no one capable of playing what was in front of them. Wallace May have had some vision but a snail would have been faster than him at letting go of the football. In NFL terms he was a very easy sack and we could never gain any momentum. **** I am glad he is gone. I couldn't care if they replace him with Hannant now he is gone.
hey you guys. Do yourself a favour and try Red Leg Rum with dry

If Hunt can improve his long kicking game, then I agree that we need a fast, threatening player who shows up in support (Marmin Barba maybe?), if he's still lacking in that department after the trials, throw in whichever of our options has the best long kicking, don't care if it's Cullen, Strasser, Barba, Paia'aua.

If our backline stays relatively injury free next year, I think there'll be a lot less revolving around who we have at 6.

Paia'aua is not ready but he throws a beautiful pass, I hate to say this but Wally Lewis like

As I said beautiful long passing game and seems very composed. Could well be the surprise packet for us fans in a year or two

Really liking your thought pattern here.. this long kicking game does pop up as an issue consistently on this board.

I think McCullough could be the man for the job. We all know he's capable of a good 40/20 when he's playing confident footy. So perhaps now, without Wallace as the senior play-maker (or prince), he and Hunt are at the same respect level. Hopefully meaning they'll step up and lead the team.

As I've said many times now, The Hunt / McCollough combination could potentially blossom like the Smith and Cronk combination has at melbourne; their playing styles are so similar to their victorian (Qld) counterparts respectively.

Funny 2012 McCullough was given a licence to kick and he did well then very next year he barely kicked.

he showed great vision just needed to work on accuracy a tad, same as hunt but it was promising. Having the entire spine (barba with his grabbers or chips) is so dangerous, opposing fullback is always 2nd guessing

So it looks like Kahu is the front runner for the number 6 in front of Strasser

REMARKABLY, the Broncos entire 2014 squad has a combined tally of just eight games' worth of NRL experience at five-eighth.

Jordan Kahu's childhood obsession with rugby union has adorned him with the tools to succeed in the No.6 for the Broncos.

He barely knew of Darren Lockyer as a youngster - his idols were Wellington-bred All Black greats Tana Umaga and Christian Cullen.

But Kahu is the definition of persistence and 2014 looms as his breakout year, following two seasons ruined by knee reconstructions before a spluttering 2013.

He made his debut last season, prompting his father to honour a decade-long bet that he would finally drink a beer if his son played first grade.

It is understood the 22-year-old is the frontrunner for the Broncos vacant five-eighth position.

The position had been destined for teen sensation Anthony Milford until the Canberra Raiders played hardball and refused to release him.

The Broncos will not move star recruit Ben Barba from fullback, leaving Kahu to tussle with Redcliffe import Zach Strasser for the playmaker role.
The Brisbane Bronocos will enter 2014 with only 8 games of NRL experience in the No.6 jersey | News.com.au

Good to hear that Barba isn't going to be shuffled out of the fullback role and specialist five-eighth's are competing for the spot. We need every player playing in their preferred position.
