2019 Broncos Line-up

Ahh the old Bird position discussion.

I think we should just say he's a great centre and leave it at that.

He'd look good in an Eels jersey though.. that's the kind of club he suits

Hi guys. Will someone be able to share the article about Jack Bird on CM
Titled: Time for Winged bird to start flying
. Thanks

I wouldn’t bother, mate. It’s just a rehash of Bird was injured, Bird now not injured. Must play to his pay scale. Where we gonna play him? Yawn.

Alright, if you must ...

The Bunker: Brisbane Broncos recruit Jack Bird needs to fly after being winged for 2018 season
JACK Bird will hit the training paddock today in the knowledge that 2019 could make or break his Broncos career.
What happened to the former NSW Origin star last season – his first year with the Broncos – was not his fault in the slightest.
He came into 2018 underdone after having shoulder surgery and then only played eight games before he was ruled out for the remainder of the year with a serious sternum injury.

Jack Bird starts his pre-season with the Brisbane Broncos having gone through a torrid 2018.
His limited appearances for Brisbane were met with backlash, which only died down once it was revealed the pain he had pushed through to play for his new club.
Reports soon emerged that Bird was unhappy at Red Hill and that he wanted to bring an early end to his four-year contract and return home to Sydney.
These suggestions were met with denials by the Broncos, but coach Wayne Bennett admitted Bird had “been through the worst”.
But whether or not he deserved the heavy criticism from pundits and fans alike, Bird has to start his pre-season with a thirst to not only get back to the player he once was, but be better.

At just 23, there is no doubt Bird’s best football is still ahead of him if he can reclaim the form that saw him reach the heights of winning a premiership with Cronulla and wearing the Blues jersey.
But given he is on a reported $750,000 a year, the fans will not be patient with Bird.
And given someone else is likely to lose their spot to make way for him in Brisbane’s 17, the pressure will be on.
Bird is one of a number of big-name players to return for pre-season tomorrow, with Matt Gillett (neck), Anthony Milford and Payne Haas (shoulders) expected at training.
New recruit Sean O’Sullivan and young gun Kotoni Staggs are also understood to be back, with Staggs one who could find direct competition from Bird.
The one issue that has plagued Bird since his arrival at Brisbane is where his best position is, but it’s looking more likely he will start at centre – the spot where Broncos greats Darren Lockyer and Gorden Tallis both believe he can be at his most dangerous.
Whether it is Bennett or Anthony Seibold who is coach next year – although it is understood South Sydney have still not yet contacted Brisbane over a potential swap for 2019 – there are some tough decisions to make.
If Bird is rewarded with a place at centre, it could not only force someone like Kiwi international Jordan Kahu out of the side, but it could mean 2018 breakout talent Staggs will spend another year relegated to the bench or in reserve grade.

Wayne Bennett and Jack Bird speak during Broncos training.
This is why Bird must make the most of his second chance with Brisbane.
If he was truly unhappy last season, it’s a good sign he did not walk away.
It shows he is prepared to make his move to Queensland worth it. It shows he is resilient.
And that is the mindset Bird has to have when he comes back to training.
He has to be prepared to fight and to prove to Broncos fans why he is not only worth the money but worth the wait and the changes to the line-up.

1 that that I can’t wrap my head around is why we should put Boyd at fullback. He’s costed us tries on the try line and piss poor attempts at tackling. Modern day NRL fullbacks are all about running and that’s what he never does except when chasing bombs.

He does give up a lot.. and a lot of the time it looks like he's having to put all his will power into just picking up a ball that's rolling towards him.. It should be easy for a fullback to do.

That being said, Boyd is a decent fullback in a side where the halves and hooker needs more guidance.

When Boyd shifted to the centres during the season he mentioned that Milf and Kodi didn't need his guidance anymore and it was actually hindering the team more than anything.

We definitely need some more flair, personality and exuberance in the fullback role.

Isaako would be good, but lacks the passing game from what I've seen.

I personally would be keeping an open mind when it comes to our spine, if I were coach.

Seibold hopefully comes to the club with an open mind and some fresh ideas.

It hurts me when there are players like Holmes, Munster, Ponga available and we just sit on our hands until it's too late.

because he is our best option ... that's why.

fullbacks of yesteryear were all about running ... modern day fullback need an element of playmaking about them.

I think our forwards will provide us with spark. Lodge, Fifita, TPJ, and Su'a (although he didn't show it due to instructions to play simply) all have freakish abilities with the ball in hand. Gillett at full fitness and confidence is obviously great at running lines as well. If we can get some more second phase play and even quicker PTBs then that will help out Niko and Milf's runnings games, which were a bit lacking in 2018 considering the ability both have in that regard.

I think what we were lacking most was the polish at the end of the great sets from the forwards.

I think it's pretty well established that we need a genuine 7 in order to really grind away at teams in the harder games.

Nikorima will never be this for us, I think O'Sullivan has a better shot at it.

Our forward pack is fine and really won't need much movement in positions all year.

Boyd would prob make a good part time hooker and can play centre, wing, full back. Good place for a bloke with no hammies. Nikorima would be a destructive 5/8th. If Glenn is still around move fifi to 18 and use Glenn in rotation and bring fifi in as depth for a year or two.

A dude with no hamstrings will last precisely one pass-off-the-ground action before snapping like a dried out rubber band.

Surely these days Nikorima would be more suited to fullback than Milford? Kodi just has a considerably better running game these days, and pretty much no kicking game.

That’s pretty much my thoughts.
