I think staggs on the bench will be his best spot next year. He seems to be able to cover a lot of positions and can goal kick.

I am making the assumption that everyone would like him there.

We don’t.

With a full team, he doesn’t have a place in it.

Bird isn’t going to be lock, not yet. He will take one of the centre spots and I can’t see Staggs getting a spot on the bench.

I am making the assumption that everyone would like him there.

If everyone's fit the only possibility to start the season would be at 14. Generally speaking I like a utility on the bench but I haven't seen enough of Staggs at dummy half to say whether or not I'd prefer other options. I think there's an argument that for younger, developing players like Staggs and O'Sullivan it's better for the team having them play 80 minutes at QCup level rather than trying to shoehorn them into a token-minutes bench spot. I think Staggs will be our first choice centre at some point in the next 3-4 years as I think Roberts and Bird are good chances of leaving after their contracts run out and Kahu needs a form reversal to be retained. All of those three players have long term injury struggles though, so I think Staggs will play first grade for at least half the season anyway.

For future reference, this is why it's a terrible idea to have too many big money/rep players in the one position. We did it with the halves and lost Ash Taylor. We're doing it with centres right now and we can't accommodate Staggs. If we move Bird to lock then it's good-bye Carrigan. Journeymen are important not only for salary cap management and leadership, but also to be the low-hanging fruit that the young guns can look at and think "Yeah, I can probably take his spot if I work hard enough. I don't need to change clubs to play first grade."

He'd be our best centre if he played there (and got his fitness back to normal)...an overpriced centre, but still our best.

people say that like it is the easiest thing in the world to do ... i've got news for you, IT'S NOT.

if we instigate the move, then Bird needs to get paid exactly what he is on with us. this instantly gives our rivals the upper hand, knowing that if their offer comes up short, then we would be forced to not only pay the gap, but also carry it on our salary cap (until his contract would have ended with us)

Plenty of good judges think he can play there, and our other lock options play a different game to him anyway. If we move Bird to lock we will end up playing a different style of footy.

Sadly for Kotoni, you are correct. The other issue he has is the coaching staff werent particularly happy with his defence even when he was at Redcliffe. He has a hell of a lot of potential, but he has to still improve. He is only 20 years old, and he has a lot of time on his side. As much as i rate him ( and i really think he will be top drawer ), he really has only done really well against a weak Titans side and a Roosters back rower playing center. Its a bit like the Turpin thing, a couple of good showings and some people think they are ready to play every week.
