2020 Round 1 Line up

So this is what I am thinking today.

1. Bird/Staggs
2. Oates
3. Staggs/Bird
4. Perese/Herbie/Arthars/Coates/Shiba
5. Isaako
6. Milford
7. Dearden
8. Haas
9. Turpin
10. Lodge
11. Fifita
12. Glenn (c)
13. Carrigan
14. Paix
15. TPJ
16. Flegler
17. Offa
That's the best we can hope for if we don't sign anyone. If this isn't the team (or at least the 1-9) I'm going to be so angry.

Yeah, the appeal isn't that great. People are just so desperate for a halfback signing.

For starters, we have several halves and only one spot available, all of them chomping at the bit to play first grade. There's the competition. They all fought for a spot in the side last season, it's not going to be any different next season and an extra body isn't going to make the slightest difference to that.

Brodie Croft for 400k isn't the bargain people make it out to be. He has no game management skills and cannot lead a side around on the field, not only that but in his 39 games he has shown no improvement in those areas nor has he shown any improvement in his other weaknesses. In his 39 games he has produced 9 try assists (1 in 2016, 1 in 2017, 2 in 2018, 5 in 2019). He produced less try assists in 2019 than Darius Boyd and he played in a side that finished 6 points clear on top of the ladder. He also could not crack the top 50 in linebreaks and linebreak assists and he came 38th in line engagement which isn't great. All of this in the Storm side. But he has a decent kicking game, though.

He has upside, so do our halves and they cost a lot less. When they were given a chance we started looking like a much better side and Milford went up another level. That's because he had a halfback that could take the pressure off him, someone to do the other shit while he just focused on coming up with the plays needed. When it comes to Croft, he cannot stick to the gameplan laid out for him and keep it simple, which is why he cannot keep the halfback spot in the Storm side. He tries to take control and ends up overplaying far too much which just hurts the team. That's not going to work with Milford.

The people that think there is appeal, go back and watch his games and watch him closely.

A halfback that won't give us what we haven't already got, a halfback that couldn't produce more than Darius Boyd and we want to give him 400k despite the fact we're apparently facing the battle of our lives to retain Fifita, who is going to be far more important.

The only appeal here is the PR.
Exactly. A Strom side dominated by

Smith

Munster

You're kidding yourself if you think injecting Croft into our side would have a net positive

Welp, looks like we're running with what we have.

1. Kahu/Isaako
2. Oates
3. Staggs
4. Bird
5. Isaako/Kahu
6. Milford
7. Dearden
8. Lodge
9. Turpin
10. Haas
11. Fifita
12. Glenn (c)
13. TPJ

14. Paix
15. Flegler
16. Joe O
17. Carrigan

The only reason I have Carrigan benched is because I just know Seibold is gonna embrace his belief that the Lock Forward is extinct and play Pangai as a third Prop. I'm not against that approach by default, because personally I'm on the fence as to whether he is right to believe there is no need for a pure Lock in the modern game, but he had better damn hope that Turpin performs admirably in the middle, because that's the only way we're creating anything in the way of opportunities.

The whole Kahu saga might have just been a genuine **** up, OR they did in fact just loan a player to a rival club for reasons that will never be known to us (maybe he had some sort of attachment disorder with McGuire that he needed to shake off, I dunno), but I'm thoroughly convinced he was brought back intentionally and for a reason, because clearly he was our player anyway (somehow).

Seibold has brought him back to play fullback for a year because he doesn't trust Isaako with the job enough, or at the very least as an insurance policy should Isaako fail. I'm a believer in the former, I doubt Isaako will don the number 1 beyond the trial matches. He just is nowhere near consistent enough of a player to be in a spine position. I mean when you can't even catch a bomb consistently as a winger, you expect to be a good fullback? Give me a spell. The only real advantage playing him there provides is getting his turnstile ass out of the defensive line.

As for the ahem lepers, by all rights they shouldn't even be 2nd choice as injury coverage after the sewer grime they delivered last year, but you just feel it in your gut don't you? Seibold won't have the spine to give them the hardass treatment in the face of a looming injury crisis, and both Boyd and McC will be back in the side at some point before the end of next season. Whereupon this forum and what feels like the entire Broncos fanbase will completely implode in on itself as support for Seibold enters a deathspiral, White strolls out in September without even sacking him and the blame game begins as another season is rather forgotten than remembered.

In the nicest way possible, anyone who has Kahu in their top 17 for next year doesn't watch enough Rugby League. He isn't in our best 8 outside backs, and I say that with the utmost confidence.

The only person in our entire top 30 he might be better than is Richie Kennar, and I'm not even confident with that take considering Richie was coming off a pretty bad ankle injury in 2018 and was out of shape for 2019 / also fucked his shoulder, I assume he'll be better this year.

I agree, but I do think Kennar is a more effective winger for us. His size is great in combination with Oates.

It looks like Oates could push into the forwards anyway due to how many backs we have coming through.

I’d like a side with a bit of energy and enthusiasm. If that means leaving out our “big name” players then I’m actually fine with it.

I don’t even care if we lose, as long as we’re trying. At least it would motivate players like Bird, Boyd and Milford to come back and make a difference to the side. We could even drip feed them back in one by one.

If we were to really shake up the side in order to make a statement for round 1. It’d be exciting more than anything.

1. Tesi Niu
2. Xavier Coates
3. Izaia Perese
4. Kotoni Staggs
5. Jesse Arthars
6. Jamayne Isaako
7. Thomas Dearden
8. Matthew Lodge
9. Jake Turpin
10. Payne Haas
11. Corey Oates
12. David Fifita
13. Tevita Pangai

I’m not on the board. I don’t have to live with that embarrassment. They’ve made mistakes and don’t want to look bad.

I’d honestly consider just making Haas our captain for the rest of his career.

But if Isaako is here long term then I’d consider him.

I reckon after the chest puffing, it goes back to status woe:

1. Isaako
2. Oates
3. Bird
4. Boyd
5. Arthars
6. Milford
7. Turpin
8. Haas
9. McCullough
10. Lodge
11. Glenn
12. Pangai Jr
13. Ofahenguie

14. Staggs
15. Flegler
16. Carrigan
17. Fifita

I would not be surprised at all if this is the round 1 side.

Didn't stop Hughes from setting up over twice as many tries. Only 3 less than Smith and Munster, the players that dominate the Storm side..

Any other excuses you want to make?

This wouldn’t surprise me at all. What a slap in the face it would be for staggs who was probably promised a starting spot for the duration of his new contract.

As a matter of fact yes,

Just win FFS

Um, where did this come from? Even in our worst nightmares you couldn't possibly have this as our team next year. Arthars over Staggs? Fifi on the bench? Turpin at 7 (Ewww). My god this side is so crap it beggars belief.
