POST GAME [2022 State of Origin - Game 2] NSW vs QLD

We got out-enthused. Yeah there were some questionable things in the ruck and the 6 agains but ultimately we just couldn't keep pace with them. I wouldn't make many changes. Game 3 at Suncorp? Name on the trophy.

I knew Burton would be good though. I keep saying it, he reminds me of Larkham.

I thought the last 20 Cobbo recovered and came up with a few really good reads and big hits in defence.
Which ones?

I think it was more fatigue than out enthused. I can't fault our effort at all, we just couldn't hold on after the sin bin turned the game.

No doubt one parlays into the other, but even Munster wasn't given the time and space that he had in G1. NSW swarmed us in numbers whenever we had the ball.

It is hard to run when you are screwed from so much defense.

So Aussie team after Game 2:

1. Tedesco
2. Holmes
3. Mitchell
4. Burton
5. To'o
6. Munster
7. Cleary
8. Haas
9. Hunt
10. Jurbo
11. Capewell
12. Martin
13. Yeo

14. Grant
15. Paulo
16. Carrigan
17. Murray

Well, I'm still yet to attend a Maroons origin victory.
Disappointed to say the least but the boys will regroup on home soil for the win.

It was noticeable the blues had a roll on with their forwards and our lack of defensive line speed could not contain them, the phantom 6 agains and sin bin contributed to fatigue ultimately losing the territory battle.

We couldn't get the pressure on their kickers as we did in game 1 and Burton offered an alternative.

I wouldn't be changing too much, maybe Cotter comes in if fit, but Slater & Co will need a good game plan(s) to win the decider against a blues team on a high.

Don't know if that was posted.

All three games will move back to a Wednesday night next year, with a 17th club forcing the NRL season to expand to 26 rounds thanks to a bye being included in every week of the regular season.

Speaking to News Corp, V'Landys acknowledged that Channel 9 - as rights holders - will still have a significant say in the timing of Origin kick-off, but the aim of the NRL must be to make it a kid-friendly game.

“When you sell broadcast rights, you have to balance your partners commercial rights and looking after the fans,’’ V’landys said.

“We respect Nine’s commercial opportunities that come with showcasing State of Origin and Mike Sneesby (CEO of Nine) in particular, has been a fantastic partner to work with. “But without fans, there is no game and I certainly want to look after the fans. I’ve said for a long time we want a kid-friendly time and we’ll certainly be discussing it."

I'd be looking into Fermor at centre, I think Oates/Holmes is our best wing combination, it's about finding the best option for centre.

You want old time experience- Fermor has only played 37 NRL games.

Paulo from the bench was a wrecking ball. We were doing ok until he came on.
That and having Yeo block the guys trying to pressure Cleary allowed them field position.

Once they got a lead they just turned the screws. Our wingers having dick fingers was obviously an issue as most sets were starting in our 10.

Klein did us no favours and it’s amateur how it’s allowed to happen.

It’s like the magic round where the rules changed mid round

I've said it before, but Gagai and Holmes are only Origin beasts on the wing. I've always said with our stocks in the centers we would be better served just playing a couple of blokes there who just know how to play center even if they arent world beaters.

So more than double the blokes I'm talking about? Kinda how I've said I want blokes doing it for at least a full season? 37 is pushing 2 years first grade experience, and has been consistently good for a shit club.

The handling and catching errors in the 2nd half compounded the fatigue. We really needed fresh legs but Papalii was not the right option and Nanai didn’t have the intended impact.
Man those tries to Luai and Cleary were soft…
Talking about Cleary - if we were following the Rugby Union head contact rules he is sent off for the hit on Ponga. Direct, forceful contact from point of the shoulder to the head, and no mitigating circumstances.

When we won game 1, I really felt it was shades of the blues in 2010?. They’d won game 3 the previous year (a dead rubber) and scraped a win together in game 1. The nsw media was crowing that they’d found the weakness and the right team and that QLD weren’t the great team they thought they were blah blah blah.

NSW are clearly the better team on paper. They have all the talent in the spine where it counts and then some, and we have one or two good players and a lot of ok players. It’s going to take a lot of grit to win in Brisbane, we can do it because QLD, but they are just class right now.
We also have a below average captain, just like nsw did.

I don't see why things are so grim for QLD.

When we play Origin footy, we beat them. We were beating them until that sin binning. All of that extra tackling on the back of repeated bullshit 6 again calls and then going down to 12 men and then suffering a HIA in the forwards, it took too much out of us. Fatigue led to errors, errors led to more tackling. That doesn't happen, NSW don't put 44 points on us.

As long as we play at a high intensity, we have just as much of a chance of winning as NSW does.

Of course....how is it anything else?
