2023 State of Origin Discussion

So Gagai was in until Saturday and then he's dropped.

Meanwhile both Holmes and Taulagi got absolutely schooled by To'a and Nofoaluma and Cowboys had 66 points put on them.

Make that make sense.

Gagai has been in better form than Taulagi. Could have had him at centre and Hammer on the wing or just have Gagai on the wing.

Yeah I agree, you just find a spot for Gagai because of how he always seems to turn up for Origin. Gigantic **** you to Xavier Coates though as well, not in the team. Not complaining, still dirty he signed with the storm during our worst period ever!

I completely understand the Ponga situation tbh. Gagai though....how many times has he not been in the best form at club level only to grow another leg for qld?

I think if he didnt have that head knock on the weekend i reckon Kalyln was in. With the physicality in Origin its probably not worth the risk at this moment in time. Its not like Ponga has actually been playing badly either. Apart from one game he's been fine but these head injury situation is getting very worrying for him to the point where surely an early retirement is on the cards.

Gagai though, its an odd one. Tualagi hasnt been in good form and Gagai has been excellent for Queensland, i'd have him there on the wing. I think Billy has got this whole team selection wrong. I cant honestly say Flegler is in good enough form to be in this side either over somebody like Horsburgh.

Billy's presser is just so contradictory.

I just can't fathom some of these backline selections. The forwards and spine are pretty much fine, you could have picked anyone in those spots and they'd do a decent job. I understand Walsh over Ponga too with the head issue but Taulagi and Holmes over Gagai, nope. Gagai has been better than both this season. Taulagi especially offers nothing, I'd pick any of Gagai, Oates, Coates, Khan-Pereira, Lee or even Feldt over him, he's useless.

And as mentioned above, if Gagai was in until the weekend, how the heck is Holmes still in? He got murdered, dug up and murdered again...by Toa...let that sink in.

I hope Capewell getting dropped is a kick up the ass he needs to turn his game around. He's been down considerably on form and wasn't deserving of a spot in origin.
He went off clutching his shoulder with 13 mins. remaining on Thursday. I think he has sustained a significant injury there and that is the sole reason why he wasn't selected.

Not good on the back of his shoulder injuries last year and then becoming a turnstile.

The thing that gets me even more is tuilagi. I mean, honestly, gagai could have his worst game at origin level ever and it'd still be better than tuilagis best last year. He hardly proved the doubters wrong, and then his team gets 66 put on them by the tigers with terrible form this year and suddenly he needs him back in the team. And dearden 19th man? Hammer or Walsh there, backs are the best in the 18th man/concussion spot. Forwards and halves can have their load taken up by the others, if a winger or fb goes down you can't chuck dearden on the fuvking wing, it'd take a huge mid-game re-jig.

The thing that annoys me is if they play well that suddenly slater gets "proven right"... NO! Players EARN their jerseys. Yes coaches have favourites and a particular style but this is just a complete lottery by slater. Not form, not style not past performances at origin level, even the youth bs can be used bcos the replaced players still have years left, can't blame a refresh from a losing series, we even won the last game. It's just random...

I'd say Munster's ribs are worse than they are letting on, while you could argue he could be 19th man and still be able to cover if he's ruled out, it's possible Munster plays and gets a big hit that writes him off, and with the current HIA rules it wouldn't be hard for him to "fail" a HIA. Then depending on what stage of the game, you get one of the spent forwards to fake the wobbly boot and bam, Timmy's in. Slater would be well versed in how the Storm have been raping the HIA rules for years now.
