2024 pre-season discussion: Pre-season Premiers

I guess this is as good a time as any to raise the question: do we still want to extend Reyno another year or two (2025-2026)?

I'm a little less gung-ho about it after tonight. This is the second time Cleary has got the better of him in a Grand Final, and unfortunately, time is more on Nathan's side.

Even if we do extend him, I think we'll need to have our succession plan in place towards the end of 2024.
Yes, I don't give a flying **** we need this man in our team, there is a massive difference between him and and a unexperienced half and we have seen it already, it isn't just the plays he does but the off the ball shit that he understands well.

Reyno had a bad night but there was some plays he did that where close to nailing it completely that would of changed the game, and you need players like him to even get into the GF, he might not be the best half back but with the rest of our team we are well balanced, he is a critical mature piece of our chess play.

take him for as long as he can handle the game then go for Lam or Walker that is what I see, two players who are growing but you want to let grow a bit till we can get them.

It's started:

Brent Read:

“What disappointed me was they bought Adam Reynolds, that’s the game, that 20 minute period is what they bought him for, to get them over the line. And Adam came up with some plays in the last 20 minutes that completely changed this game, it wasn’t just the dropouts."
"Nathan put up a cross-field kick and he let it bounce, he also got caught on the fifth tackle at one point. That for me, you look at the two halfbacks, when you look at the two halfbacks. One stood up and dragged them over the line.”
"I don’t know if he can play in 2025 but I think he certainly deserves the right to go around in 2024 and if he goes well. He had a great season and he had a bad 20 minutes, but that doesn’t mean he should pack up stumps. He’s had a pretty good year."
Anasta:

“If the Broncos get to the grand final and win, they have justification there and Reynolds has been unbelievable this year. But if you actually do watch the game, one or the other halfback had to stand up and Adam didn’t.”
“Let’s not dismiss the year he has had, this is not by any means putting Adam down, he’s had an amazing year. But your halves is what you pay big money for to win grand finals.”

Buzz:

“What Adam Reynolds showed me last night, he’s looking for a contract extension, beyond next year for 2025. From what I saw last night I’d love to see him play next year and then pull up stumps. The Broncos can’t really afford to give him more because they have got to keep Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam. And I think he showed last night he is well and truly at the back end of his career. I’m saying he missed a couple of games too going into the finals.”

No Reyno at the Broncos, no GF appearance this year.

Cleary has been with his team mates since they were kids, so knows what to do & expect.

The difference between 2015 and this year is that 2015 felt like it was ours to win. On top of that, it felt like a genuine premiership window given the age of the team.

Hodges, Thaiday, Parker were all over 30. A lot of other guys were around 28.

This year so many of our players are not of the age that you would expect their peak. Mam, Walsh, Cobbo, Staggs, Riki, Haas, Patty, Kobe all feel that they haven’t reached there best yet.

Herbie and Flegler are big losses as they hit incredible form in the end of the season but we won plenty of games when they were either missing or under form.

When you look at our errors it's amazing we got as close as we did:

I can't believe how Ezra's flown in under everyone's radar until this week. He's been our MVP, week in, week out.

No he hasn`t .
There was a time mid season when other options were discussed .

He improved in the last month . I made a post a cpl of weeks back saying Ezra was under orders to keep it simple . Focus on defence and backing up . And that the next cpl of seasons he would show his full bag of tricks .

Yep, that's a 12+ point loss in stats. Hence my point that we only need to keep it to a close-to-even contest to be able to toast them. That's how they win, I don't buy in to this Cleary GOAT bullshit, if Reynolds had the same number of opportunities, with the opposition as fatigued as the Panthers get, the Broncos win by 24+. Sure, Reynolds had a couple of bad plays at the end there, and executed the dropouts poorly, but Cleary had some poor plays too, that were masked by his team dominating field position anyway.

I'd almost say Cleary was bad for the first 65 minutes. He had no impact on the game other than being run through 2 or 3 times for Ezra's tries.

He of course turned it on at the end, but my grandmother could have run through the defence we offered up for his and Leota's tries.

Strongly disagree. Ezra has always been terrific, and even stood out in the trials before his first game. His game has matured this season, but the talent has always been there. Who was talking about dropping him?

In 2 seasons, he's scored 24 tries in 38 games, including 18 from 25 this season.

By way of contrast, Munster took 6 seasons (first was only one game) to score 24 tries.

And that's without even mentioning his defence.

Don't get me wrong huge Ezra fan here.

He scored the tries backing up . Wasn't particularly creative and rarely broke the line till the last month . Didn't overly impress me mid season .
Looking fwd to seeing him play the way I know he can .
He is a lot more creative than we have seen yet .
