2024 pre-season discussion: Pre-season Premiers

Or we could talk about Fox's comments about Jack Wighton here:

Do I distinctly remember poor Ko-toe-ni's suspension at one point a few years back, being delayed until after he rehabbed an injury - after which time the suspension then kicked in? Is there something about injuries that happen after a suspension is handed down allowing the suspension to be served concurrently with the injury? Or is it really just the luck of the draw depending on how the NRL feels about the club and the player?

I jest, it's pretty clear it's just up to the NRL. Haas/Kelly 2 game suspension for a semi-private scuffle while Latrell/Wighton get forcibly arrested and get...fucking crickets (aside from the fact they were found not guilty, still brought the game into I'd argue more disrespect than the Haas/Kelly incident).

Or maybe I'm just a jaded one-eyed fan...
You've missed the obvious one ... that fightin, bitin Jack Wighton retired from rep football last year.

I guess he's unretiring for the All Stars and then retiring again for NSW... unless he finds himself chomping down on someone and needs those blues jumpers to serve a couple suspensions for him

I do think it is interesting too that he mentioned he passed to Aquaman who scored in the corner. I still think Deine will be a winger round 1.
Arthars is injured, so as others have mentioned, Deine and Oatesy were first string wingers.
But for what it’s worth I got to Mondays training session (a rarity as I work full time and live on the coast) but it was very quiet and I was next to a photographer having a yarn with a broncos staffer who went on to mention they’re in no rush to push mariner this season and are happy for him to play cup unless required. Take it with a grain of salt, but points to Oates pipping him for round 1 at full strength pending form.

I also got to be pretentious and have a bit of a chat to Matt ballin after the session and picked his brain on our second row sitch. Hunt is training there and would appear the next cab off the rank, likely bench forward utility (he is an imposing figure up close I must say). Ballin also shouted out Ethan O’Neil and Josh Stuckey too for what it’s worth.

Great info... the thing that concerns me though is that it was quiet? Was that the team/players that were quiet?

Sorry by quiet I mean spectators. Compared to peak bandwagon szn late last year, there was only about a dozen fans. I strategically chose the back to school Monday morning.

The session was intense, lots of contact and opposed session plays. The boys all look in bloody good nick. Although Julia Robinson who was on the sidelines puts them all to shame.

I too was admiring mariner burn the sideline and didn’t see reyno go down.

I still think Deine will be a winger round 1.
Something weird stuck in my head about Deine from last season. When Herbie ran did his backwards running try late in the season Deine was right behind him pointing at the ground trying to get him to put the ball down. My first thought was, 'this guy takes his footy seriously'. There were other small moments during the season that made me think he's got a good attitude towards the game and is going to be a real professional.

Anyways I hope he gets that wing spot.

LOL .

Kelly and Haas has form for previous incidents .
Kelly was vidoed drunk and being abusive in a fast food outlet . Haas was documented threatening a female police officer and not co operating with a police investigation .

What were Jack and Latrel`s previous indescretions to warrant similar punishment ?

There was that time Jack assaulted 5 people in 3 separate incidents in one night.

"The Raiders fullback pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, three counts of common assault, and one charge of public urination. He was then given a two-month suspended jail sentence, a 12-month good behaviour bond and fined $3,500."

NRL banned him for 10 matches and $30 000.

Team is training at Twin Waters for the rest of the week.

Skipper Adam Reynolds travelled to the Coast as planned on Monday afternoon, running freely with the club’s rehab specialist on Tuesday, expected to return to full training this week after a minor foot injury at training in Brisbane on Monday.

The kid does all the little things so well, a lot more mature than his age.

My thought was, dude just got tackled and managed to get back up, burn past the rest of the Parra defence and be an back up option.

Wheels, if he gets a break he's gone.

Yea it was a great example of never giving up on the play, just incase you're needed. Unlike that number 3 for Parra, who gave up on the chase twice lol. Should be dropped for that effort.

I'm happy to let Mariner play a bit more Q Cup this year but I think if that's the plan there has to be a spot available for him in 2025. I think from what I've seen of him in first grade and Q Cup, there's enough there to hold his own initially before really starting to blossom. Not like he's some pet project that might make the grade.

Multiplayer highlight reel right there.

This is the ideal situation for a club to be in. Extremely talented and almost guaranteed NRL-level player champing at the bit to get a permanent spot. While having an experienced, rep-level clubman on an end-of-career cut price deal setting the standard and making the young buck work for it.

You only get these sort of situations if you're a club with standards that players want to play for, otherwise one or both of them are gone to chase a guaranteed starting spot (Mariner), or a final payday (Oates).

I agree with the sentiment but with Aquaman, I don't think this is a kid who needs more cooking in second grade, he looks absolutely ready to me. You don't want to let him start getting frustrated at lack of opportunity.

At the same time, I am of course backing the coaches in, they've earned our support after last season.

He'll get his opportunities this year. There will be injuries, rep duty, and possibly suspensions. I'd wgger he'll play at least a third of our games, and if he gets an extended run due to injury he might do what Arthars did and hold the spot even when whoever he's slotted in for gets back...

I have no idea the standing of the staffer, could’ve been a throw away comment talking out of his arse or the go-to line from the club to lower expectations on deine. Although the guy did say Xavier was making his presser debut after the session, so he was in the know. Like said above, one would assume he’ll get healthy game time this year either way.
I was pleasantly surprised by his size in person, as it was a reservation I had over him given how slender he looks on screen, but he looked bigger than kotoni when they were doing drills.
I think Arthurs rightly deserves one spot if fit, he was epic in the finals run, and how good a position to be in to have Oates and mariner tussle for the other.

Side note, I have a soft spot for Hoeter. I know he’s in his twilight years and surrounded by young bucks, but if they struggle with burn out in a long season, there’s worse things than him getting an extended run at centre. Reminds me of kotoni in that he’s compact, powerful and just love the way he moves. Very underrated depth squad man
