Ashes Discussion

Really, really poor captaincy from Cummins. They should have run off as soon as Ussie hit his 100.

Khawaja the difference between the two teams

Happy to see Green get some runs, hopefully he can kick on from here

I don't think Australia will win this. Too much rain around and the pitch has died

It was 16 balls and they were trying to get to 400 and not have the bowlers bat. Calling 16 balls really really poor captaincy is really really poor commenting.
He sent in a new keeper to bat at a time he didn't need to, who then went on to get out first ball. He clearly wasn't chasing 400, or he would have went in himself when Carey got out. Just because it only lasted 16 balls, he didn't know that going in. For all we know, we'd still be batting.

We had more than enough runs when we were 350 ahead. It was poor captaincy.

He was chasing 400 without the bowlers batting, Carey got out so declared.

During the drinks break after uzzy got his 100, uzzy asked the runners whats the plan and they said 400. So clearly Australia were going for 400, but once Carey got out Cummins decided there's no point going for it. There's no point risking our bowlers, could get injured.

If Carey is a team man, he wouldn't have cared about the whole situation.

Bowling has looked off to start the innings... Only Boland has been spot on and asking questions.

Hit the fucking stumps Cummins... currently aiming at 6th stump FFS

He’s losing the plot aye

That seemed to be a very lacklustre end to the day.

Is the pitch dead??

Seems like the odd one does something, but there was barely any seam movement with the new ball in that last session... draw looks odds on

Yeah you'd hate to see a bowler break a finger on a pitch that has shown some extreme bounce off a normal length. Keeper is fine though, he doesn't need his fingers.

I'm not saying Carey would care, I doubt he would. We should have declared well before he was even required. Now we only had 10 overs to bowl, and didn't pick up a wicket.

This. We should have been slogging as soon as we were 300 in front, and looking for 8 an over. England are duds, but they have blokes who could bat the whole day on a pitch not offering much when they are chasing a score they know they can't reach.

This is the legacy of having India run us down last year.

Scared of losing so make sure of a draw at worst.

Not the first team to have PTSD over an Indian fight back

I think we still had PTSD from when South Africa chased down like 400 odd and then the England openers scored double 100's to bat out about 2 days or something like that

At times we lack a bit of variety once the new ball is gone.

I think that's where Green's real value comes in because he's bowling 140's with steep bounce. Hazelwood does too, but it's nice having a 4th seamer that can bring wicket taking balls... MMarsh on the other hand is more like a skidder so he just looks easier to handle... Green could basically be Morne Morkel, but he could also average 40 odd with the bat

Our biggest issue is a lack of reverse swing, but that is becoming an issue across cricket due to covid and not being able to use saliva.

And also not using Marnus a bit more... Lyon isn't a big turner so you could use a guy like Marnus or Smith or Warner a bit more with their leg spin to create that bigger sideways movement whilst Lyon can work on using his bounce.

I just think when we get to the 4th innings bowl em out scenarios that it's basically new ball for 10-15 overs and then hope we get something but if nothing is happening just keep grinding to the second new ball.

We basically expend 40+ overs wasting time until the next new ball is due and then hope to God we get something straight away.

What India do really well now is just put it on the stumps.... we are still living in the McGrath mindset of aiming outside off to be outside their front pad.... the two pommy openers today have moved across to off and we moved our bowling across to compensate and they spent that last session just leaving them.

The Indian bowlers dont give a shit if you move across they still just hone in on your stumps and throw in some catchers on the leg side... "you miss we hit"... OR you hit it slightly in the air we've got a short mid wicket or square leg in play... OR any slight movement off the pitch we've got you playing and the slips come into it

We have to make them play every single ball

India not only a couple of days ago got beaten quite comprehensively trying to defend a total that I thought they would defend given how ordinary South Africa have become with bat in hand.

No need to panic, they'll create enough chances tomorrow to win the game. Whatever concerns we are all having, I am sure Langer will be having them too and they will come out with a better approach tomorrow.

Since the Taylor era- 73 times we have declared in the third innings- 53 wins, one loss and 18 draws.

All the declarations with less than 300 lead- draws.
