icon_thumbs_u i knew there is no way Ponting would let those South Africans take our #1 ranking [icon_razz1

I was impressed Ponting actually showed some captaincy nous, rather than just sitting back like a spectator as he was in the Australian summer.

Seriously, some of his reactions back home were like a fan - cheering with a wicket and getting pissed off at dropped catches or loose balls.

He lifted his game, finally. Hope he remembers 2005 when he gets to England too...

I told everyone who would listen that the sooner we flicked Brettina Lee the better!!!

McGain (sp?) is gettins thrashed all over the park and the Aussies are on their way to a crushing loss here.

Looks like Prince got a hold of him in the first session or two today. Seems he's batted very well to date, hes probably cut its taken him this long to get back into the team and that the captaincy was stripped from him during the week. Good on him!

Just shows that McKenzie is a fluff and should have been punted ages ago.

Should be able to fight for a draw here I think at least. Very hard to come back from 200+ runs behind though

Fair dinkum, Warnie's put a similar curse on the Aussie spinners spot as Aflie did with the Broncos No. 7 jumper. They deadset can't take a trick. Unfortunately McGain is getting clubbed with ease. Gotta feel sorry for Grandpa.

So at the moment we've got an expensive leggy, an attacking yet expensive offy, an offy who bowls economical lollipops but is as intimidating as Preston Campbell shoulder charging Steve Price, and then a heap of young pie lobbers.

4 quicks is looking the goods for Pomgolia, minus Ronald.

Clark, Johnson, Hilfy, Siddle.

Probably safe to say that Lee will be taken though.

And agreed Jez, McKenzie is a monumental nuffy and shouldn't be anywhere near a spot in a team as decent as the Saffas.

Once again Siddle is going for crap all runs - not the style of quick you'd expect to be keeping it tight. In this innings he's bowled 18 overs at a rate of 0.88 with 1 of the 2 wickets. And with bugger all FC experience too. Good on him, hope he stays fit.

Agreed on pretty much all of that. Someone needs to keep it tight though when the opponents are scoring at like 4-4.5 and over (johnson economy is 4, hilfenhaus 3.8, mcgain 8.8 etc)

McGain's figures: 11-2-102-0 [icon_lol1.

So since Warne / MacGill we've tried Beau Casson, Cameron White, Nathan Hauritz, Jason Krezja and now McGain. Time to give up with the idea of playing a spinner for the sake of playing a spinner?

At full strength, four quicks is the way to go with North / Clarke / Katich to chip in.

Krejza was the best spinner out of the lot of them IMO. McGain is just to old to be tolerated a few bad matches... Aussie bowlers look tired this test and it looks like they haven't shown up to play. The Aussies have a poor record in dead rubbers.

Agree about Krejza, if they're going to go with a spinner then he's the one they should persist with and work on. Out of the current batch he's got the most potential, but still a long, long way to go. I thought McGain may have done an alright job as a stop gap but he's been clubbed in the tour match and this match so far.

This could turn out to be another all-rounder problem, where the selectors will be bring themselves to the point of obsession in rotating players and trying different things. Like polishing a turd and all that, so we need to be careful.

The facts are that we simply don't have a Test class spinner and allrounder (a few that are close, but none genuine) so we have to play to our strength and use 4 quicks as our standard line-up, rather than playing certain positions just for tradition's sake. I mean look how it played out for us the first two Tests - the first time in a while that we've looked close to taking 20 wickets in good time against good opposition. Lose Ronald and throw in Clark and it just gets better.

Ethos is on the money - the three part timers should look after spin for now while we wait for the Warnie curse to be lifted. All of those 3 guys are certainly no worse than any front liner we've played in recent times.

Why isnt Steve Smith being nurtured! He is a future star, a leggie who can also hold a bat. If only NSW saw his potential

B.E. McGain - 18 overs, 2 maidens, 0/149 @ 8.27 RPO.

Saffas 7/632

And Katich removes De Villiers in his 2nd over, lol.

Put McGain on suicide watch, poor bastard.

He doesn't play enough cricket for NSW yet to be considered. He has potential but as do most first class cricketers. All he needs is one big year and he is although I think he is more of a batsmen than bowler. Most likely play one day cricket more than the longer format of the game.

McGain is gone if he evers plays for Australia again it is a massive joke. Also every spinner the Aussies have blooded lately has been getting belted because they have no reputation and no reason to be feared. Wareny got batsmen out before he even bowled to them, Hauritz and co aren't intimidating and don't sledge at all.
