I think the problem Hammo is Australia doesn't pick the best 6 batsmen, best 4 bowlers and best wicketkeeper/batsman. They seem to have an obsession with picking all rounders, and then proceed to not really use them as all rounders.
Worse they seem to think the formula has to be:
- big hitting opener who either scores big or gets out for SFA (Gilchrist -> Warner)
- decent opening batsman who can accumulate runs (Hayden -> Marsh)
- quality number 3 batsman (Ponting)
- 3 batsmen who can bowl a bit (Husseys, Clarke, Watson, Symonds, albeit M. Hussey doesn't bowl much)
- wicketkeeper who can hit big, or another half arsed all rounder (Haddin, Hopes etc)
- flat, uninventive spinner (Hauritz)
- super fast bowler with poor control who may or may not rip the heart out of the batting (Lee -> Tait)
- solid line and length bowler who can take wickets (McGrath -> ??? That's what we're lacking at the moment to be honest, we either have a second super fast bowler - Johnson, or a second swinger - Hilfy)
- medium/fast bowler with plenty of variation (Bracken, Hilfy)
Forget the pigeon holes, just fucking pick the best one day batsmen in the country, the best one day bowlers, and the best keeper batsman and be done with it.
