Barba vs Boyd

If the Broncos sign Boyd, is it because we need him to fill an important position that need a class player? If so, which position?

FB ... I doubt that very much. Milford is the man for that for mine. Is it wing? Maybe. I wouldn't necessarily object to that.

Is it 5/8? What a joke

Boyd isn't the worst idea as fullback next year, what puzzles me more is the deal with Boyd and Bennett, is he the long lost son or something?

Newcastle Knights clear path for Darius Boyd to re-join Brisbane Broncos as talks continue

THE Broncos have moved a step closer to securing Darius Boyd after Newcastle on Friday cleared the way for the Maroons back to return to Red Hill. In a major boost to Broncos coach Wayne Bennett’s hopes of luring Boyd, Knights boss Matt Gidley said the club was unlikely to stand in his way if the Test star wanted to rebuild his life in Queensland.

Bennett insisted he was not applying undue pressure to Boyd, who returned to Australia from a Mediterranean sabbatical on Monday to confront the next phase of his NRL career.

Newcastle were expected to put up a fight to retain their star fullback, but the club’s willingness to consider a release has paved the way for Boyd to again wear Broncos colours.

Under the terms of Boyd’s contract, the 27-year-old has until May each year to advise Newcastle whether he wishes to rescind the following season of his deal, which expires next season.

That deadline has long passed, but Gidley says if Boyd is seeking a return to Queensland and the Broncos to aid his recent battle with depression, he has the club’s blessing.

“Darius’ emotional welfare is the most important thing,” Gidley told The Courier-Mail.

“We have been supportive of Darius through his treatment and if a key component of his recovery is being back in Brisbane near family, I understand that.

“We have yet to receive any request for a release from Darius or his manager for 2015, but if that did take place we’d certainly consider that.

“I’ve had some discussions with his manager, so if Darius would like a release, they need to advise us of that and we’ll look at it.

“I haven’t spoken to Darius personally, but what’s important is focusing on his rehab and if he comes to our club wanting a change, we have the ability to release him.”

With Brisbane battling salary cap pressures, Boyd faces a major downgrade on his current Newcastle deal, worth an estimated $600,000 annually, to return to the Broncos.

Boyd would not be the first troubled NRL star to accept a pay cut to play under Bennett. Justin Hodges returned to Brisbane in 2005 on a $150,000 deal after struggling to adjust to life in Sydney during his turbulent time at the Sydney Roosters.

Before his overseas trip, Boyd privately told Bennett he would not be at the Knights next season but the master coach said on Friday he was not coercing his backline protege to quit Newcastle and reunite with him at the Broncos.

“I’d like him to come back and play here but I’m leaving it to Darius,” Bennett said.

“There are a number of guys who are capable of playing fullback so we’ll see where Darius fits in.

“Darius hasn’t decided to come back yet so I don’t know what he’s thinking.

“Until he does that, I won’t be making too many moves.”

Hopefully for our sake, Boyd feels it is best for his recovery if he cuts the cord. The Titans are just down the road, that way he can still remain close to daddy.

Thanks Big Pete.

**** I love Wayne. Getting him back was the best thing this board has done so far. He knows how to get it done. Yes we need to move on, eventually. But this time we can transition properly.

Bring on 2015 baby!

Let the hatin' commence. :thefinger:

I'm really tired of the petty jibes, the endless repetition and referencing the relationship WB has with Boyd. Many of us will live a lifetime never knowing the brilliance of a father son relationship or indeed a mentoring friendship. This constant harping on the relationship like somehow, having a great bond between a wise and respected elder and a young and inexperienced man is a bad thing. Most of the posters on here, if involved in such a thing would treasure every moment of that friendship. You should be so lucky. I pity people consumed by such hatred and jealousy.

Yo me the board re-hiring Bennett reeks of desperation.

It seems like the board didn't foresee the eventual need to sack hook. Even the most ardent Griffin supporters like myself saw this need 12 months ago (even if we didn't admit it until early this season).

And because they didn't forsee this need, they didn't plan for it. And when Bennett came on the market the took that as an opportunity to sack hook.

Re-hiring Bennett puts the club in a holding pattern for about 3 years (until he retires). What is also does is put massive pressure on his replacement (especially if he performs well, which believe me I am hoping for).

I also strongly disagree with 2 of his potential early decisions in signing Packer and Boyd. I don't feel they are I the clubs best interests on or off the field.

But I will be cheering the team on as usual regardless of the decisions he makes or players he signs.

And if Boyd was coming to play wing then I would but Bennett will give him fullback and NEVER drop him regardless of performance ...

And that doesn't sit well with me

It's hardly Darius' fault that Wayne rates him as the best Fullback out of him Barba & Milford, so you probably shouldn't hold it against him, and FTR Darius hasn't even spoken to Wayne about joining the Broncos, let alone demanding the Fullback spot, for all we know he might come here and volunteer to play on the wing to accommodate for Barba & Milford to play in the spine.

So yeah, we shouldn't jump to all these conclusions until he actually signs and wears the number 1 jersey.

True. I would hate to have some experience and reliability at the back.

We must have been watching different Darius Boyd's for the last few years... He hasn't been reliable at the back since his Dragons days. He has been poor (and that is being kind). But at least we know that even if he continues that poor form, he will keep his spot.

I have never agreed with a post of yours this much.

I'm not sure why we need to keep attacking the boyd/Bennett relationship. Boyd has gone his whole life without a father figure, who gives a **** if he has found one in Bennett. Boyd is a great fullback and can play the style of footy Bennett wants. Who cares what their relationship is

No shit mate we fucking know. There is barely a post you don't say it.
