OFFICIAL Ben Hunt returns home to Broncos on two-year deal

There's always a lot of talk about Bhunt's 2015, but I think that's mostly due to us making the Grand Final... I seem to recall that he had an insane 2014 when he finally got the 7 jersey full time.

I recall him playing first receiver, both sides of the ruck and his running game was so strong... he just always wanted the ball and would just pull something out of nothing seemingly at will.

In 2015 I felt it was more about the whole team playing well and Milf being a revelation at 6... whereas in 2014 he had much less help and he was still trying to get that 7 jersey which Hook kept from him for so long.

There's a lot of left side work in the below highlight vid for anyone concerned about him playing that side of the field.

I was watching his 300 highlights package and his early days he worked well on the left setting up Oates and Reed.
Once Boyd came that was pretty much his go to on the left.
Haven't watched enough Dragons games to know how he's worked since going there.

Think he's pretty much been first receiver and working both sides of the field at the dragons... this might have dropped off a bit when Widdop was there though.

Thing I've not liked about Hunt's play at the dragons was his reluctance/inability to engage the defensive line when working the team into positions, like those dump off plays to his second rower, etc. He never really got all that close or look threatening to defence so they can line up whoever he's passing it to.

This changes when he's planning to take the line on and he looks his normal self showing his strength in the tackle.

I think this reluctance to engage the line was potentially because he was the main man for dragons so he couldn't afford to not be in the next play... therefore he kept himself well away from the line to not get taken to the ground.

Hopefully with Reynolds out there he will know he can play second fiddle and really just inject himself as much as he wants and engage the line like he used to before he left Brisbane.

Apparently it was a BBQ at the club that led to Hunt coming back.

Tony Spencer must be one hell of a cook on the grill.

I’m often critical of the R&R team but they’ve nailed it again. Huge signing and didn’t overpay reportedly. #destinationclub

I can’t wait to see what the coaches come up with now we have all these weapons available. The whole team got humbled last year, a lot of players are going to have a point to prove and none more so than Hunt.
Not to go full McHunt but the R&R team ultimately does what the coach wants.

The R&R team has unearthed so many good players and under Dave, they’ve put together som really great deals. They lost their way between 2023 and 2024.

It’s a great signing. I’m just wondering when Broncos face the fact that they had the absolute worst back rowers in the comp last year.

Agree on the intercept being poor but imo he didnt seem to bounce back from the drama following the game which makes me nervous he won't from this as well but time will tell. At his best he is a great attacking threat and can throw himself into a tackle as well (can miss an opposition centre though!) but at his worse he is a waste of 800-900k or whatever we signed him for.

Hunt is brilliant insurance for Ezra.
Yep the pros for hunt far outweigh the cons. Ezra will need to re earn his spot and will need to come back in at his 2023 level.

I have been hoping for Hunts return to the Broncos for years. We never should have let him go. Certainly a great reason to get excited for 2025. The bronx needed this signing after the last season, sacking kevy and the ezra shitfight! Can't wait to see the team gel and win some games

I don’t see how this is anything but a home run.

Here we are sitting with this terribly ugly situation with our current star half, which is certainly ending in a massive suspension.

Someone then gift wraps you a more than competent stop gap for that position AND they can slot into the 9 and replace your current bum 9 when EZ is back.

Not to mention this is borderline chump change in this day and age. Seriously it’s probably not much more than someone like Paix is earning and he collects dust.

Add on the vibe boost for bringing back a former club grand finalist and it’s a no brainer.

Seems very low risk as well, unless this squeezes out someone we actually want to keep, which I guess is possible.

All in all, I’m well jacked for 2025 now, let’s trot.

Bent Hunt and the Broncos brings back some emotional scars. Hopefully our success over the next two years erases whatever happened in 2015.

Emotionally scarred from him carrying us to a grand final? Sick of hearing this low iq opinion. Multiple things left to that loss not just a dropped ball, it’s a team sport remember. No hunt that year and no grand final.

I would have prefered no GF with what happened.

100%
You want to talk about moments in that game?

McCollough goes himself on the last, on their try line instead of passing the ball to Parker who strolls over for an easy try and game over.

Next set, multiple times they keep the ball alive because we fail to execute a proper wrap ball and all tackle.

At the end, due to scars, Oates doesn't trust Reed to tackle his man, and Feldt goes in.

The game should have been done right there - Thurston missed a kick - Thurston of all people.

2015 hangs around all of their necks, not just Ben's for 1 error. Lots of errors led to that result.

So far according to my Dragons supporting work mate-

He isn’t actually very good anymore
He will refuse to play 9 if asked
He is a cancer that will tear the dressing room apart.
When told on that last point that he won’t be captain and will be able to take a back seat a little more here, he pointed out that Walsh and Carrigan are about to walk out of the club because McGuire isn’t letting them leave early from training to get home now.

Yeah Dragons fans are salty as hell about this.

So they should be.

They threw the bank at him, gave him all the support in the world, backed him before they backed any other coach, he was supposed to be their man. One finals appearance?

I'd be salty too.

Frankly, if one player is the difference between finals and no finals - you're whole team is cooked.

I don't think many here would lay our crap season in '24 at the hands of a single player or position. It took lots of people to suck that hard.
