..........
Boyd was shattered when Brisbane told him they didn't want him in for 2009.
At the time, Bennett was packing up to head to the Dragons following 21 years and six premierships at Red Hill.
He'd advised the club to sign up its players, never expecting Boyd, who'd been discovered as a tentative 18-year-old, to be released.
"He (Boyd) came to me with tears in his eyes," Bennett told AAP.
"I said: 'what's happened' and he said 'they don't want me'.
"I said to him: 'don't worry about it, I'll take you with me ....I'd love you to come to the Dragons, so let's go and get it sorted out' and we did."
.....

What a loss!

We kept Michaels who was recovering from a knee recon over him, another piece of Bruno Cullen stupidity!

Yup, one of those cases where compassion is retarded.

Absolutely and as sad and cruel as it is, NRL is a business and that was as bad a business decision as you are ever likely to make.

Don't blame Bruno people he has the club in a very good financial state.

A terrible, terrible decision.

Even if Michaels hadn't been recovering from that injury, Boyd would still have been my preference.

Boyd's been a loss, but at the time Bruno and co had to make a decision, Michaels and Boyd were showing similar potential, and Michaels was chosen - its just been unfortunate that Michaels has gone downhill, and Boyd has skyrocketed...

Rated him during his time at fullback when Hunt was injured he was very solid, from memory i remember a game he starred against Newcastle (if anyone else remembers which game it was refresh my mind..)

At one stage last week when St George played the Tigers, Boyd just just broke through the line as if he was gliding, very reminiscent of Lockyer back in the days..

Since adding a passing game to his arsenal it has upped his game significantly; a joy to watch.

Boyd was always a much better fullback than winger and at the time they thought we had Hunt for life. Yes they picked Michaels over Boyd, but at the time he was cheaper (I think?) and probably had more of a role in the club. Obviously a terrible decision in hindsight but I can see how it happened.

I agree. Boyd was such a loss, but we can't really turn back time. We've lost Michales now anyway...and we have Hoffman. icon_thumbs_u

We all have 20-20 hindsight, that's true. But we also lost Kemp to keep the injured Michaels. Again, just poor planning. They could've withdrawn the offer, or reduced it, but didn't for compassionate reasons...bad idea.

And it was Bennett who fucked our recruitment..........

any moron could see michaels was going to amount to nothing... oh wait.. no, only a smart few saw that

Right move salary cap wise.... everyone knew Boyds talent, he was earmarked as an Australian player from the time he was in high school. The Broncos knew in the next year or two he would be playing for Australia. How do you fit Hunt, Hodges, Folau and Boyd... all Australian players... into a backline already featuring Locky and Wallace.

You don't.

The right move was made.

Berrick Barnes says 'hi' from Rugby Union. potentially the biggest loss we've ever had, and the only reason he left was because Bennett wouldnt give him a go.

Nah, that's rubbish. He was ALWAYS a Union boy and whether he was starting for the Broncos every week or not he would've gone back. He's said as much.
