Bennett not to return - Signs with Knights

Re: is the master coming home

AP mate, he can deliver. It might not be instant - and not necessarily a title... but he can deliver.

And he can fail. Australia in the tri nations or world cup or whatever it was ring a bell?

Of course he CAN deliver. So can Ricky Stuart. So can 14 other coaches in the NRL.

Re: is the master coming home

You mean Tri Nations 2005 when we lost Lockyer and Johns mid-tournament?

Re: is the master coming home

or when he was mentor for nz and they won?

AP's life as we know it

1983 - Bennett coaches Queensland Police Academy Under 18s to a Premiership

AP: "He will never win a Premiership with in a semi-decent league, anyone can win at that level"

1984 - Bennett takes over Souths and takes them to the BRL Grand Final but loses.

AP: "See, he's shit- told you he wouldn't"

1985 - Bennett coaches Souths to a BRL Premiership against a team with the likes of Wally Lewis and Gene Miles

AP: "Any coach could do that BRL is a minnow competition and Lewis and Gene Miles were shit- He could never hack it at the top level"

1987 - Bennett along with Don Furner joins Raiders who had only won 8 times in 1985 and much the same with 1986. Even though boasting the likes of Mal Meninga, Gary Belcher and Steve Walters.

1987 - Along with wining the State of Origin Series he and Furner coached the Raiders to their first Grand Final appearance, although they lost.

AP: "See, told you- Can't hack it at any elite level- even with the likes of Meninga, Belcher and Walters- couldn't turn a team of champions into a champion team if he tried."

1988 - Joins Broncos - Coaches QLD to a 3-0 whitewash of NSW then retires as Origin coach to focus on Broncos.

1992 - Wayne Bennett wins his first Premiership with Broncos. A club only 4 years old.

AP: "Fluke."

1993 - Wayne Bennett wins his second Premiership with the Broncos.

1994 - People who know what they are talking about award Bennett the Medal of Order of Australia "in recognition of service to the sport of Rugby League, particularly as coach of the Brisbane Broncos".

AP: "Grumbles."
AP: "See, hasn't one anything for a while. His true colours are showing."

1997 - Bennett's Broncos defects to Super League.

AP: "Now he's gone to a league without competition, only way he can win a Premiership."

1997 - Bennett wins Super League Premiership.

AP: "Told ya..."

1998 - Bennett's Broncos rejoin the newly formed NRL.

AP: "Now he's fucked.."

1998 - Bennett's Broncos win NRL Premiership.

AP: "All Alan Langer, any team with Alfie would win."

1999 - Langer anounces his retiredment.

AP: "No more Premierships for the Broncos!"

2000 - Bennett wins another Premiership with the Broncos.
2000 - Bennett receives the Australian Sports Medal for "significant contribution to the development of sport"

AP disappears.

2001 - 2005 - Bennett coaches his teams to finals appearances but no premiership

AP: "He's shit- plays boring football. Not a good coach, past his best."

2006 - Bennett wins a Premiership with a team many would not expect to do it.

AP: "Melbourne had a bad night. Bulldogs choked. etc etc. Luck of the irish."

2008 - Bennett announces he will be coaching St George Illawara as of the 2009 season.

AP: "He won't win anything there- a bunch of chokers. Only coach who could get anything out of that team would be Bellamy."

2009 - Bennett turns Dragons into defensive unit in the competition. Dragons win minor premiership but bow out to the Broncos in the Semi- Final.

AP: "See, bunch of chokers. They'll never win a premiership. Bennett is just not good enough."

2010 - Bennett coaches Dragons to their first Premiership in 31 years.

AP: "Of course he did- they are a bunch of NSW and QLD Reps. He inherited a team of the best players in the NRL. He could do that with any team..."

... to be continued ...

Re: is the master coming home

mals life as we know it

1950: Wayne Bennett is born
1950: mal: "omg this guy is the greatest coach of all time and will still be the best coach even when hes not"
1951-2011 and beyond: mal: "omg this guy is the greatest coach of all time and will still be the best coach even when hes not"

look, no matter what happens there are some people who will never say anything other than that hes the best coach. he could coach a team for 10 years and they get the wooden spoon 10 times, and theyd blame the players and say the coaching was fantastic.

then there are those that realise that yes, he was the best coach around for a very long time. now, hes not the best coach, but when he has a good team of players that just need their heads straightened a bit, he can get them straightened.

is he the best coach of all time? to date, yes. is he currently the best coach? no.

i was a huge bennett fan up until about 2002-2003. i wanted him as the QLD and Aus coach every year up until then, as he was the best. but thats when it had become painfully obvious that he couldnt adapt to the changing game of rugby league, and that he needed a better team than the rest of the competition to get results.

even the people who awarded bennett all his best coach etc awards agree hes not the best coach anymore. when was the last time he won the best coach at the dally ms, or anything like that?

True, it has been awhile, but that's only coz the power brokers didn't want WB winning it every year. The other, inferior, coaches would all get jealous and have a tantrum. [icon_drun

That's cute. Just for your information, I don't know if Bennett is the best coach of all time - how the **** would I know that, but I will say his past AND PRESENT could argue a good case for him.

There is a difference between you and me AP and is what I tried to convey in my earlier post. I can admit when I am wrong, I do not force my opinion onto others and more importantly I filter opinions both ways, as in I take in others, process and deliver mine. I'm not a shouting brick wall.

Personally, the only reason I would welcome Bennett back to the Broncos is if we had a plan in place for the future using Bennett has a cog. I personally do not see the benefit of having a quickfix, except for maybe a premiership along the way.

I doubt Benny would come back without a proper succession plan put in place IMO... [icon_shru

I thought it was understood that Bennett will always be the best coach in the game and they just give it to whoever went ok during the season?

Dally M's are media opinion awards right?

Someone explain to me how Mal's post isn't just pure baiting of AP - if AP had posted that kind of post first we'd all be jumping up and down about it.
