NEWSFLASH: Bennett returning to old stomping ground.

Wayne Bennett will join Canberra Raiders as David Furner's co-coach in 2012. Bennett, who co-coached with David's father, Don at the Raiders in 1987, felt he had unfinished business at the club.

"We went to a Grand Final in 1987 before I left, and I see a similar player pool growing there now.

"Back then I was learning and had the privilege to work under Don Furner, and I see a lot of myself in young David. I feel the challenge to win a premiership with the Raiders for the first time since 1994 and to groom David into one of the game's premier coaches is irresistible".

If this were true, I'd be very happy. I have a soft spot for the Raiders.

Re: Bennett not to return

It's actually a scenario for Bennett I would love to happen!

Bennett can **** off and play his stupid little media games elsewhere.

I don't understand the hate towards Bennett? He doesn't seem to have done anything. If the guy has made up his mind where he's going to coach, I wish he'd just come out and tell everyone, but if he hasn't made up his mind, isn't he doing the right thing by keeping his mouth shut?

I just think the media is latching on to anything they can, and it's making Bennett look worse than he is.

Re: Bennett not to return

Really happy that griffin can now develop the team into what he wants. I suspect he will go with youth.

He doesn't seem to like it when the truth gets out and it doesn't flatter him, then the media is a scoundrel, but when their talking him up for months about which club he will save next, he does nothing but encourage it. Benny isn't the saint hes made out to be and the further this drags on the more he looks like an egomaniac. I'm not having a dummy spit either, i have never been in favour of him returning. Hes the greatest coach the game has seen imo but hes not without flaws.

Re: Bennett not to return

Latest I am hearing is he's gone to Souths and Tallis might be coming to the Broncos

I don't get it either. Just because the media dances in circles around him doesn't mean he's encouraging it. He came out and told people he was leaving the Dragons when he made that decision, and he'll come out and tell people where he's going when he makes that decision.

I don't think he's a saint, but he has every right to take the time to come to a decision. It's hardly a minor life change - it involves where he lives and the people he's going to deal with for at least 2 years. We didn't even know what was happening with the Knights until a week ago FFS, of course he would wait until that was sorted out.

I have no problems with the way that any party has behaved in this situation - Bennett, the Broncos, Griffin etc have all conducted themselves appropriately IMO.

Re: Bennett not to return

Here! Here! Oxy and Schmix.

Bennett is the same towards the media whether they are dumping on him or praising him. People seem to forget that Bennett doesn't write the stories and a lot of the time "journalists" just make stuff up to sell papers.

Agree with Schmix - everyone involved (except the media) have conducted themselves properly.

Re: Bennett not to return

Wayne is obviously a complicated bloke. The simple clear vision he expects of others is certainly not a quality he has himself.
Although, he of course wants us to think otherwise.

There is absolutely no doubt that he will end up at Newcastle.
Why?
The big bucks that big Nathan has offered him.

Tinks, by securing the Wayne train, will garner more public support in his quest to build public and political support for his harbour coal plans.

Like others have suggested, Wayne's time here has come and gone.
He can bluff some for some of the time, but I fear his pool is shrinking at Brisbane.

I wonder what he said to Darren?
It really is all about Wayne.

I laugh at the idea the Roosters deal fell through because Wayne wanted Ricky to find out before it hit the media.
Why didn't Wayne tell him then?

Same with the Broncos situation.
He was obviously meeting with the Broncos while still clearly under contract with the Dragons.

How would Justin Hodges feel about playing under hypocrisy like that?

His halo really has slipped and I suspect he knows it.

Re: Bennett not to return

Tend to agree with RBY somewhat. I had a feeling all along he was not coming back.

Re: Bennett not to return

Bennett would've been a 'nice to have'. Griffin is where it's at now so let's move on and get on with enjoying watching the broncos continue to win games.

+1.
I'm glad he didn't sign, we don't need him we have moved on.

Re: Bennett not to return

Would love to have Tallis back taking care of the forwards although he hasn't done much with the South Sydney pack.

Re: Bennett not to return

A couple of decent articles in the SMH, both by a guy who is clearly a fan of Griffin thus far.

They pretty much verbalise how I feel about the whole situation - you would be stupid to not chase Bennett if he's available but I'm just not sure it's the right time, nor am I shattered that he's decided not to come back.

I think he'll be back at the Broncos in some capacity in the future, but it will be when he's fulfilled his need for a "challenge" and is looking to settle somewhere long term.

Re: Bennett not to return

I actually don't think Bennett will ever be back on the Broncos payroll. IMO when he decides to step away from hands-on full time head coaching, the NRL (independant commission) will create a role for him to nurture/develop other coaches and setting up nation-wide development programs and possibly even a part of the role being in the development of the international game.

I also believe that a big part of Bennett's decision in not coming back is for the good of the club. He too realises that if he does come back and has the level of success that Henjak only just missed, all future club coaches will be forever doomed by his legacy - he knows the club has to move on without him at the helm for its own good.
