Boyd bombshell: Maroons star 'done' with rep footy

Even if Boyd is at the back of his career and down on form, he was still a great servant for QLD and Australia and continues to be for the Bronco's, I think he deserves a lot more credit and respect then he's getting on here

With every game he’s eroding away at the respect fans held for him. It’s not so much a case as ‘you’re only as good as your last game’ but Boyd is tapping the well dry of past credits, either deliver as a well paid captain and fullback or give it up before you’re only remembered for some dreadful final years.

The thing is, if he retired now (more than half way though the season) he would probably leave the Broncos in more shit, then if he finished off the year as fb and captain. We don't really have a genuine gun fb at the moment to replace him. By going to the games, I've noticed Boyd's organising skills in defence are second to none and are going to be missed desperately when he leaves, he's the closest thing to a organiser we have, which I think goes unnoticed a lot of the time. I do agree that his best days are behind him, but he still brings a lot to the team and I personally think he deserves to be cut some slack for his work load, as he is getting older and definitely is at the back end of his great career.

Well deserved cabbage in my opinion. Money can't buy experience, he would be the Yoda of the team really, when you look at all the fresh faces coming though

You realize that unless it can be thoroughly and independently verified that he is retiring due to career ending injury, his salary will be counted in the salary cap for the remainder of his contract? If another club can pick up a large % of his salary for the next 3 years after this, great. Otherwise have him play in the QLD Cup and be used as a backup utility player. Or maybe he could make a handy utility player period, not just as backup. One thing is certain, he isn't cutting it as a fullback any longer. At least not for the last year. Maybe he will reverse the trend. Doubtful but possible.

If he decides to retire after this year (not specifically for injury) why would they be required to have his contract in the cap after that? You sure you have that right?

With every game, Broncos "fans" are eroding away at his legacy, because they're precious snippy bitches who want someone to blame for why we've only won 5 of our last 7 games.

This is how Boyd plays. It's how he played in 2015. It's how he played for St George. It's how he played for the Knights in 2013. He's not, he never has been, and he never will be a flashy fullback. He is an excellent organising fullback who is also a great playmaker. But he's not fast, he's not powerful, and he's not exciting to watch.

Why do people all of a sudden think he should be, or have this idea that he used to be and he's now lost it?

I don't really get the timing of this announcement to be honest.

If Boyd really wanted to quit rep footy and concentrate on the Broncos, he could have made the decision months ago. He was obviously hoping to still get picked in game 1.

But then he didn't, and now I'm a little torn as to his motivation. One part of me thinks maybe his omission made him re-evalute things, and he is doing this for the good of both QLD and the Broncos. But a larger part of me just wonders if this is Boyd sulking like he normally does when things don't go his way. Trying to get on the defensive and appear like it was his own decision, and also a bit of an up yours to the team - if you didn't pick me in game 1, well stuff you all, don't come knocking on my door if you ever need me in the future.

He should be admired for what he's achieved for QLD and Aus in the past, but it just seems a strange way to go out.

One thing I did notice about Boyd in that Storm came was when he scored he pointed to his wrist tape which I'm positive had K.W written on it which I just presumed was Darius reminding Kevvie he is still around. Can anyone confirm if that's what was on his wrist?

It was for his Wife and Daughter Kayla & Willow. He has it every week apparently.

That's one hell of a conspiracy theory lol

I'm not trying to get into an argument. Have you completely removed a paragraph here? Or are you actually of the belief that Boyd is the same player he was in 2015?

You're right. He's not flashy, he's not a super star, but he was a damned fine fullback, being in the right spot, always at the right time, ready with a set play, a sweeping pass, running a gap, chasing players, chasing the ball etc.

It's absolutely laughable to think that anyone could say that Boyd is the same player he was back then while holding a straight face.

Yes. Parramatta had the same thing with Watmough and Manly with Brett Stewart and Matai.

And don't quote me, but didn't they put a stop to the rest of a contract not being counted when Bennett rigged the system with Gasnier's massively backended deal that they never had an intention of honouring?

Yeah, that's how I recall it

I think they learned from that scenario to disallow such heavily back-ended contracts.

But I think a player is still able to pull up stumps on their career and terminate their contract whenever they want, so long as the club agrees. Otherwise Hayne would never have been able to cut & run from the Titans (which I didn't think he could TBF, but the NRL let it happen).

Not sure. I only know it isn't allowed now.
