Boyd snaps Achilles - Replacement?

Now the Queensland under-20s sensation wants to honour the legacy of Lockyer, who will mentor Milford, by being the Broncos’ next champion pivot.

“It blows me away to wearing the No. 6,” Milford said.

“I’m humbled to be wearing that famous Broncos jumper. There have been greats who have worn that jersey and I don’t want to let them down.

“In high school, I remember watching ‘Locky’ doing his thing. I liked how calm he was on the field and that with the game on the line, he would make the magical play.

“I can’t play the way Locky did. I still need to learn my trade at five-eighth, but I’ve always loved the halves and I want to cement that No. 6 spot.”

JUSTIN Hodges, 32, says he will support Darius Boyd on the "long, hard road" back from a ruptured Achilles tendon that will sideline him for up to nine months.
But the Broncos veteran centre considered an ideal replacement for the star recruit said his injury-plagued body would not be able to handle a full-time switch to fullback.Boyd will undergo surgery on Tuesday after going down on Friday in just his first full week of training back at the NRL club.It is a worst-case scenario for Brisbane who cut star fullbacks Josh Hoffman and Ben Barba in the off-season to create salary-cap space for Boyd."It's tough mate, I've really enjoyed my time here, I've only been here for a week," Boyd told Fox Sports."It's exciting times ahead and I'm sorry I can't be there with the boys but I'll be back and it's going to make me a stronger person in six months' time."

Hodges knew only too well the battle Boyd faced, twice coming back from the same serious injury. He missed all of 2010 but made a remarkable recovery after going down again in 2013, returning five weeks earlier than expected in April."The Achilles was always the worst one to come back from," said Hodges, who has battled numerous complaints."It's a long hard road but I am here to help him and we also have great staff."Boyd said he had only spoken to Hodges last week about his Achilles injury."He was saying it feels like someone's kicked you from behind," he said."It's disheartening and it'll be tough work to get back."But I'll be stronger and more determined to get back and play for the Broncos again."Filling in for an injured Hoffman, Hodges shone at fullback late in 2014, steering Brisbane to a last-gasp finals berth. However, Hodges said he would only consider donning No.1 if he could share the role with the likes of Anthony Milford, recruited from Canberra to play at five-eighth."I won't be putting my hand up (for fullback)," Hodges said."To do it for 24 weeks would be pretty tough on the body."I enjoyed the role this year but it took longer to recover."But there's ways we can work around it - I can swap with Milf but that's up to Wayne (Bennett)."Teammate reported hearing a popping sound when Boyd went down during Friday's early morning session."They were just doing a simple training drill ... and Darius did a turn and that's as simple as it will be - it's no-one's fault, it just happens," Bennett said in a statement."I wish it didn't happen but it's happened."Halfway through the season he will be back playing for us, we'll manage it while he's away and get on with life."

He wants to cement the halves spot in the future....

He's been told by WB he'll be playing 6. As such, he's hardly going to come out and say how much he loves fullback.

Milford won't get moved ... Bennett sees him as our long term 5/8.

Probably not.

But anyway, my point was to show AP that Milford has come out and said he wants to play in the halves and he sees himself as a half. I'm done with the Milford argument now.

he said this after being told hes playing in the halves permanently by wayne bennett....

Probably not.

and you didnt do that, because nothing you have provided shows that he wanted to move into the halves any time soon. You even directly contradicted what you were arguing by posting the first link where milford himself says he wants to play there in the future, not now. now youve linked an article that is about how he feels about playing 6 after being told hes playing 6 by the coach. its irrelevant.

I'd consider throwing Hodges into the 6 and playing Milford at fullback.

Ah yess, that would work.

1. Milford
2, Vidot
3. Reed
4. Copley
5. Kahu
6. Hodges
7. Hunt

I'd be very happy with that.

It's funny, because if he wants to play like Lockyer for most of his career, he needs to be playing fullback.

5/8th is not the same position it used to be.

I really want Kahu to get a shot. He would of been our best fullback since Khunt left. Hopefully he can get a shot, build his confidence and find some form. He is talented enough, but lack of opportunity as well as his cruel injury's have set him back a few years. But nonetheless he's still very young.

The only thing I'm afraid of having Hodges at five-eighth regularly is he comes up with a lot of poor options a lot of the times without being in the spine. However if he's in the spine, I think we'll see a lot more errors and spur-of-the-moment plays, such as a forced pass, an unnecessary offload, or a poor short kick which just hands over possession.

I like Hodges at centre with the freedom to occasionally involve him self as a second fullback. That way his touches are more limited, but there generally of higher quality.

That's easily rectified, when in the attacking half, Milford and Hodges swap positions. It allows Hodgeo to work his magic at the back while giving Milford the chance to shine as playmaker in the halves

Everyone is happy

Just saw the news, I don't know whether to laugh or cry

Milford needs to be fullback.

He is the 2nd best fullback in the game as of right now.

That's a bit far fetched... He's certainly good and talented, but not near being one of the best in the competition at the moment. He has some flaws in his game which he needs to work on...

Hang on.

Of course it matters! Five Eighth is arguably just as important if not more so than the fullback position and presents a far greater opportunity for somebody to be exposed.

I'd also argue our options are better at fullback than five eighth.
Think Milf staying at 6 would be best but he needs to be given permission to roam the field more than a regular 5/8 therefore playing to his strength at fullback while cancelling out his weaknesses at the back, (kick returns, positioning, and his defence in the line is better).

Might be time to take a chance and blood a Niko at the back otherwise I see Bennett using Hodges who Bennett stated when he signed that Hodges would be an option (before Boyd signed and before Hoff and Barba were released).
