THE Broncos are close to settling their 2017 roster with Kodi Nikorima poised to stay while Brisbane have ruled out going to the market to replace Corey Parker.

Parker is likely to be the only Broncos star missing from next year’s team with Matt Gillett and Jarrod Wallace to re-sign this month and Nikorima now expected to stay put too.

Last month, Nikorima was all but certain to join the Melbourne Storm to be Cooper Cronk’s halves partner. He is still the most likely of the current team to leave but Brisbane are now confident he will stay at Red Hill.

“There’s no update yet but we are getting there. There should be a decision made soon,” Nikorima told The Courier-Mail.

Retaining Nikorima will be a boost for the Broncos. It would be a major coup for Brisbane to keep Nikorima because the Storm deal is a better opportunity.

Gillett will definitely stay. As The Courier-Mail first reported in May, Gillett loves the Broncos too much to leave and his re-signing is imminent.

The Broncos are also signing young gun Jaydn Su’A to an extended deal while Lachlan Maranta has also been offered a deal.

One signing the Broncos have definitely ruled out is Greg Inglis.

While the Inglis camp have lobbed the possibility of Inglis moving north, his asking price is far too high for Brisbane who could only use him as a left centre. Inglis will retire in Brisbane but is no chance of playing for the Broncos next season or in his next contract.

The Courier-Mail also understands Brisbane will not chase a top line forward to replace the retiring Parker. They will instead back Josh McGuire to transition to lock with Jarrod Wallace to start in the front-row.

Young forwards Jai Arrow and Tevita Pangai Junior will then be regular interchange players. The club’s ability to replace Parker from within is a major wrap for their development processes.

The club will have a much harder task keeping next year’s roster together.
Ben Hunt, Anthony Milford, Josh McGuire, Alex Glenn, Jordan Kahu, Jack Reed, Andrew McCullough, Adam Blair, Darius Boyd, Corey Oates and James Roberts are all off contract.

Like the Cowboys found out this year, it is impossible to keep that many stars together. Two of those players could have to be moved on in order to bump up the salaries of the others.

Even an older player like Boyd is in career best form and has every right to seek an upgraded contract while Oates, Kahu, McGuire and Milford will have to be bumped up significantly.

Still feel like we are missing a big bopper with good go forward. We have to small a pack Imo.

Presumably 1 year contract on minimum wage for Maranta, not a bad depth winger. I'm happy that we're not looking elsewhere for forwards, I think we can cover the loss of Parker in-house.

Looks like we're heading towards..

8. Wallace
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Su'A
12. Gillett
13. McGuire

14. Thaiday
15. Pangai Jr
16. Arrow
17. Nikorima

I can't help but notice that there's no mention of Ofahengaue or Ese'ese at any point in this article.. Potentially falling behind In the depth charts? Which is a shame because I still have a soft spot for Joe, he started the season poorly but he's still so young, surely we aren't throwing him on the scrap pile already.

Offa is the noteable exception for me. I guess they will both continue on the rotation system until they are really ready.

I don't think our pack is too small.

When we are on our game, we can match any pack in the comp. We have shown we can bash bigger packs. Just need to get back into form and our forward pack will be more effective.

Putting a lot of faith in these guys to develop at a rapid rate, they will all need to be beasts to replace the work Parker does.

Wtf maranta? Is it a downgraded deal? The guy has been around for a while now and only offers safety under the high ball.

Easy - Blair and Reed out. We don't need to lose anyone else.

I reckon Blair needs to stay, I could handle Reed and Glenn playing elsewhere... As much as I like Alex.G and can't fault his work rate I prefer a harder to handle 2nd rower... I'm looking forward to seeing Oates in the role

The talk was Reed and Glenn making way for other players obtained as new signings...

Appears there may not be any new signings, but we'd still release them?

Reed might be very average, but we've been very thin without him. Without a centre 3/4 signing we are relying on the (great) but injury prone Kahu to fill his spot and then we are down on wingers, having lost Eden already.

Eden isn't much of a loss, but he is still getting games ahead of our other wing 'talent'...

I'd say Blair, Roberts, Glenn and Reed are all very expendable next year.

If Inglis is no chance then I hope we're looking at Te'o.
