[FONT=&][FONT=&]THE Broncos are close to settling their 2017 roster with Kodi Nikorima poised to stay while Brisbane have ruled out going to the market to replace Corey Parker.
Parker is likely to be the only Broncos star missing from next year’s team with Matt Gillett and Jarrod Wallace to re-sign this month and Nikorima now expected to stay put too.
Last month, Nikorima was all but certain to join the Melbourne Storm to be Cooper Cronk’s halves partner. He is still the most likely of the current team to leave but Brisbane are now confident he will stay at Red Hill.
“There’s no update yet but we are getting there. There should be a decision made soon,” Nikorima told The Courier-Mail.
Retaining Nikorima will be a boost for the Broncos. It would be a major coup for Brisbane to keep Nikorima because the Storm deal is a better opportunity.
Gillett will definitely stay. As The Courier-Mail first reported in May, Gillett loves the Broncos too much to leave and his re-signing is imminent.
The Broncos are also signing young gun Jaydn Su’A to an extended deal while Lachlan Maranta has also been offered a deal.
One signing the Broncos have definitely ruled out is Greg Inglis.
While the Inglis camp have lobbed the possibility of Inglis moving north, his asking price is far too high for Brisbane who could only use him as a left centre. Inglis will retire in Brisbane but is no chance of playing for the Broncos next season or in his next contract.
The Courier-Mail also understands Brisbane will not chase a top line forward to replace the retiring Parker. They will instead back Josh McGuire to transition to lock with Jarrod Wallace to start in the front-row.
Young forwards Jai Arrow and Tevita Pangai Junior will then be regular interchange players. The club’s ability to replace Parker from within is a major wrap for their development processes.
The club will have a much harder task keeping next year’s roster together.
Ben Hunt, Anthony Milford, Josh McGuire, Alex Glenn, Jordan Kahu, Jack Reed, Andrew McCullough, Adam Blair, Darius Boyd, Corey Oates and James Roberts are all off contract.
Like the Cowboys found out this year, it is impossible to keep that many stars together. Two of those players could have to be moved on in order to bump up the salaries of the others.
