Broncos - 2015 Discussion

After today's WCS win vs Wigan this should be our week 1 line-up IMO.

1. Kahu*
2. Vidot
3. Copley
4. Hodges
5. Maranta
6. Milford
7. Hunt
8. McGuire
9. Macca
10. Blair
11. Glenn
12. Thaiday
13. Parker(c)

14. Oates
15. Gillette
16. Gavet
17. Ofhengaue
18. Nikorima
19. Garbutt

* Boyd to replace Kahu on return from injury, Kahu to replace Maranta based on form at that point in time.

Bennett has a tough task of putting this final 17 together. Nikorima has earnt a spot if Wayne wants to go with a utility, in which case I don't know who you take from the bench, maybe Ofhengaue.. Bennett wanted to give him one more year in NYC but I believe he outplayed a number of the other forwards(Dodds, Gavet) and earnt a spot in the top squad.

Mate Oates is a winger this year.

this is what i want to see, to start the season

1 kahu
2 vidot
3 copley
4 hodges
5 oates/maranta
6 milf
7 hunt
8 blair
9 macc
10 mcguire
11 glenn
12 thaiday
13 parker

14 gavet
15 dodds
16 gillett
17 kniko

18 offa

-gavet did enough to get a bench spot but may be pressured.
-if oates is ready to go then put him in over maranta. but i actually dont mind maranta and he was solid in the wcc.
-glenn had a great wcc and with someone who can pass inside him, he looks good.
-offa very close to taking dodds spot. but it was dodds first run for 2 years. and he's reliable in defense. offa doesnt need to be rushed, either.
-not sure garbutts position in the pecking order but at the moment it looks like he's got alot of work to do to force his way in.
-i just really like kniko for some impact. we have big minute backrowers in parker/glenn/thaiday/gillett, so its actually wasteful to carry two backrowers on the bench. may as well have someone that can spark us around the ruck if needed.

I think the team would be like this

1 Kahu
2 Maranta
3 Copley
4 Hodges
5 Vidot
6 Milford
7 Hunt
8 McGuire
9 McCullough
10 Blair
11Glenn
12 Thaiday
13 Parker

14 Nikorima
15 Gavet
16 Dodds
17 Gillett

I think Oates will start in ISC if he is underdone but could get a wing spot. Nikorima looks to have his nose in front for the utility spot since WB has said Macca will not play the full 80. Ofahengaue to start the season in ISC before getting a debut later in the year. Gillett to start off the bench because of his late start to the preseason because of injury.
I cannot find a spot for Reed if Copley is in the centres. If Copley is on the wing then Reed gets the centre spot.
We potentially could start the season with Copley and Oates on the wing. Vidot and Maranta playing ISC

I see all that except for Dodds, I just think he needs a little bit in the ISC to get back into the swing of things, because as I see Ofahengaue in good form and handled himself well against Wigan.

WB doesn't normally play games so if he said he won't be there then I doubt he will be. Don't know if you guys noticed but WB gave Dodds a fair bit of time today, I would assume to get some time and confidence into his legs

Poor Doddsy had a target on his head every time he touched the ball. I am a fan of Dodds but for his sake he'd be better off having a few games in the ISC to get some match confidence. I thought he was a little tentative with the ball in hand, which is obviously understandable after not playing footy for 18 months.

I was impressed by Ofa. Big and strong. Had a few strong carries. He bent the line back on a couple of hit ups and ran over the top of a defender, something that hasn't been done regularly enough in recent seasons. He definitely held his own against a physical pack. I would like him off the bench.

I also enjoyed the subtle change of Vidot on the right and Maranta on the left. Maranta was more comfortable being as far away from Hodges as possible hahaha (although the Hodges to Maranta sweep play was nice)

Kahu had some good touches, without being spectacular. The tackle which lead to the first try was a beauty and he was pretty solid with the high ball considering the miserable conditions.

I really like the look of the following forward pack. Hopefully this is the team we'll see come round one:

1. Kahu
2. Oates
3. Copley
4. Hodges
5. Vidot
6. Milford
7. Hunt
8. McGuire
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Glenn
12. Thaiday
13. Parker

14. Gillett
15. Gavet
16. Garbutt
17. Ofahengaue

We have big, strong wingers, yet still a reasonably quick overall backline. The dynamic pairing of our halves who can really open a game wide open during the latter stages of a match. A good mobile forward pack to start off the game, but a pretty huge bench with the impact and game-breaking ability of Gillett that can roll over the fatiguing opposition teams. McGuire can cover hooker for McCullough if need be (he played a bit of hooker for Samoa. Plus Parker played a bit in the allstars and a bit during training)

I think we have a pretty good balance with this team.

I don't think we can have Oates and Vidot on the wings, it's fine having one big tall winger who can make good metres out of our end, but I think having one on each side will really become an issue when it comes to Hunt bombing to the corners, neither of them is Israel Folau. As much as I hate to say it.. we need Reed, he's solid defensively and now that we've got Milford down the left side and a seemingly in form Glenn.. he might be back to his best as well, and he can jump.. It sucks having to move Dale back to the wing, but I think it's best for the team at the moment.

1. Kahu
2. Copley
3. Reed
4. Hodges (c)
5. Vidot
6. Milford
7. Hunt
8. McGuire
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Glenn
12. Thaiday
13. Parker (vc)

14. Gillett
15. Oates
16. Gavet
17. Garbutt / Dodds / Wallace / Ofahengaue

I still can't fathom why people think Thaiday is starter material. He's good for the 30-50 minute period and maybe once more depending on the score. I worry about his defensive speed when he plays more than 40 mins. He gets burned way too often. Can't wait til he's gone tbh. Time to start easing him into retirement while maximising his impact

Maranta had a good game v Wigan, but his fear of getting bundled into touch will more than likely draw a penalty from his shepherding by hitting the brakes and running back behind his centre. He's safe under the high ball, and can occasionally finish off the backline move when he doesn't put his foot on the line. But aside from that, he's average at best.

If we MUST have Reed in the side, so be it, but I'd prefer Coppers there

1. Kahu
2. Oates/Vidot (whomever suits each side best aka who Hodges would prefer outside him)
3. Copley
4. Hodges
5. Vidot/Oates
6. Milford
7. Hunt
8. McGuire
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Glenn
12. Gillett
13. Parker

14. Nikorima
15. Thaiday
16. Gavet
17. Garbutt/Dodds/Offa/Wallace

Captain I imagine will be Hodges, but wouldn't be against a Hunt or Macca appointment

At this point in time, our squad can't get much better than the above

I really like the way the team is shaping up! Looking forward to a year of great success! Go Broncos!

Souths in form...39-0 win over st helens. Fingers crossed for round 1

Most of the side picks itself. Main points of contention are wingers, starting back row and bench composition.

I'm all for Vidot and Oates on the wing. Both need to really practice under the high ball and defence though. We can play to their respective strengths in attack, but we will be targeted out wide in defence.

Backrow is tough. Parker is given at lock, and I prefer Glenn to Matt or Sam, given his work rate. I'm inclined to start Gillett, as I think Thaiday isn't quite as fit, but can still provide significant impact when fresh. Probably diminish our penalty count, given how often he seems to get pinged.

With that in mind, I think a bench of Garbutt, Thaiday, Ofahengaue and Gavet is the way to go. Two impact players, two workhorses. Starting props Blair and Moose can play big minutes, and the above would compliment them well.

If Macca needs a rest, move Glenn to hooked and sub in Thaiday (or even Ofa) to the back row. I could see an argument for Kodi as utility, given the above is not ideal. I'd rather carry four big boys, but he would displace Ofahengaue (who's still raw) or Gavet (smallest motor of the above) if needs be.

Given the fact Garbutt has had back problems and hasn't played a trial, i am not sure why all you guys think he should be on the bench come round 1.
Personally i think he is next to no chance.
I would have Dodds or Ofahengaue there before him at the start of the season.

Also if Macca is not to play 80 minutes I would rather see attack than defence so Nikorima would get 14 over Glenn or McGuire at hooker. Honestly McGuire playing hooker would be a complete waste for us
