Broncos Player Movement and Rumours 2020

Have we done it on the first tackle of the game? And was it an offload or an early pass? I don't remember an offload from Blair on the kickoff that led to anything.

I don’t think there’s been one on the first tackle of a game, but definitely a kick-off and maybe it was at the start of the second half. On that occasion it was a short pass at the line after he’d committed multiple defenders.

I’m not saying it wasn’t risky, just that had it gone right and it had led to a line break or better yet, a try on the first play of the game, perhaps our collective memories of Blair’s last 2 months would be very different.

I think we've scored twice from that. One was against the Rabbitohs but I can't think of the other one. The short pass at the line is definitely a better option than an offload though

Wasn't the other one in the 2015 grand final? I don't remember the end result of that game though so we shall never speak of it again.

They would have had money left to keep Hunt and Blair or upgrade them. Hunt might have been on 500k or something but they would have factored in close to 800k or a Mil to keep him there. Just because they are on a certain amount now, doesn't mean they weren't thinking ahead and creating cap space to retain them. Hunt left for more than Broncos could offer, so they used what Hunt would have potentially got to get Bird.

There was buzz going around he was being offered close to a million but Dragons offered a longer deal. Arrow, Ese, Blair, Benji and Moga are all quality and they would have liked to keep them all you would think, everyone else just offered more.

They didnt really try too hard from what i heard to keep Moga and Benji. Arrow was only offered a slight upgrade. Herman was the only one they really wanted to keep. I heard very early on in the year that one of our older forwards wouldn't be playing next year, it now appears thats Blair.

Didn't Oates score our first try from a Blair offload deep inside our own half ?
I think the offload was off to Milford, onto reed then onto Oates and away for 100 metre try off a kick off. That was an epic moment. Damn I miss reed after having moga. He always put in 100% even with that shoulder and you could tell the others loved playing with him. And Milford was on absolute fire that 1st half, almost untouchable (from 5/8th)

Herman also seemed like he didn't want to go either. How close were we to keeping him? He's not on big money really at Newy

Not sure what we offered, but he got a pretty good offer from newcastle

I know money talks but surely building a brotherhood to win a premiership together must count for something. Like wallace is unlikely to win a premiership before his contract expires at the titans. Could be the same for Herman. Both left the broncos on the cusp of hitting their straps to play for more money but weaker teams. Where as they stay for a bit longer for less the broncos would be in prime position to challenge the premiership with a strong pack.

Wasn’t it similar to Moga ie ~400k? I know we have Savelio + Lodge + upgrades, but I’d have preferred we put the money into Herman if the club had an inkling that Blair was leaving. My own bias aside, people were unfairly harsh on him this year.

Who was harsh on him? Most here were blown away by his early season form and really impressed with his late season form. He didn't play quite as well in the middle of the season, but he was really good for us overall.

A fair percentage of fans in general. May not have been on here, although many were happy to let him go during his down period because they thought he was replaceable. Which to a point he is, but for someone of his age + potential, and players available, it just means we’re bringing in another new player and hope they at least can match that level.

Thinking about it, we’ve developed 3 quality props in about 6 years and one didn’t even reach his potential til he got a start at a different club.

We’ve had a lot of busts between signing or shoehorning ‘old’ blokes into prop. Hala (who I still have a soft spot for), Dodds (injury), Timu (Mission/RU), Kennedy (drop kick), Green (potato), Anderpson, Gavet (another drop kick), Molo (shoulders), Lui (one of the worst players ever), Slyney (who I didn’t think was too bad).

Between them we’ve had Petero for a year, Hannant who wasn’t that great, Thaiday getting belted and ruining him imo, Parker who managed to still be great and Blair who was mostly good but not fantastic. I don’t think we should have let a good prospect so (what seemed) easily when every club wants good props which I think he’ll be.

I dunno, just felt like at times I was one of few campaigning for him to be kept/ in the 17 every week.

That became a much larger and probably over-informed response than I planned

Not sure mate. Heard it was around 500k a year, but not 100 percent sure.
