Lowe is trash. Wouldn’t be worth it even if he was minimum wage. All of our current cheapies are already better than him.
I don't know if i would go as far as trash ... but i certainly wouldn't sign him even for minimum wage. we have plenty of depth in the backrow, all of whom i would give game time to before Lowe

My controversial take:

Middle Forwards
Lodge (Keep and upgrade if possible), Haas (Definite Keep), Flegler ( definite keep), Pangai Jr (must keep and upgrade), Sims (let go), Mago (keep), Ofahenguae (must keep), Tagataese (keep on base wage), McGuire (keep unless an offer too good to refuse comes along), Fai (keep on base wage or let go), Tueli (keep on base wage), Carrigan (must keep)

Edge Backrowers
Gillett (keep as recently upgraded but watch injury comeback closely), Glenn (keep as on low wage), Sua (keep and upgrade), Fifita (must keep), Savelio (let go), Funaki (let go or keep on base wage), Staggs (keep on minimum wage)

Hooker
Macca (keep until better option comes along, there has to be one somewhere), Turpin (keep on minimum wage), Murphy (keep on minimum wage)

Halves
Bird (let go, pay part of wage if need be), Milford (keep), Nikorima (keep as on low wage), Dargan (keep on minimum wage), Scarlett (keep on minimum wage), Nona (let go and upgrade T.Boyd in place)

Backs
Boyd (retire, look to offload, though unlikely to be takers), Oates (must keep and upgrade, cannot lose this guy), Kahu (keep on current deal), Isaako (keep and upgrade), Roberts (keep), Opacic (keep as on low wage), Shibasaki (keep on minimum wage, Pangai (let go and maybe sign another young back on full-time wage), Pearson (possible keep, no longer looking all that promising)

Who we let go:

Bird first and foremost, Sims and Boyd, cannot lose Oates, Isaako or TPJ, they are the key re-signings.

My side for next year:

1. Isaako
2. Oates
3. Roberts
4. Opacic/Shibasaki/Staggs
5. Kahu
6. Milford
7. ??
8. Lodge
9. McCullough
10. McGuire/Ofahenguae
11. Su'a
12. Gillett
13. Pangai Jr

14. Nikorima/Staggs
15. Haas
16. Carrigan/Mago/Tueali/Tagataese
17. Fifita
Lot of pay cuts and axings there and the needless retainment of second stringers who will never be anything but. It'd be great if a roster was this easy to assemble but this isn't a Fantasy comp. Most of what you are suggesting is unattainable and unsustainable.

O’Neill or Lowe? That was a joke right? Like to see if we were still reading?

O'Neil or Lowe. Depending on contract size. Unlikely, given they would not be base.

Only back up base options based on the proposed players to let go.

The point is now moot as they have both elected to take up their one year options with the Cowboys.

not to mention we'd effectively be playing well over a million UNDER the cap for the next 3 seasons, while we subsidize the pay checks of players to play against us ...

Not to mention no recruitments to replace that money saved.

This is the NRL, contracts mean nothing now, you can make it work if you want to.

that is only true if both parties are happy to part ways ... if one party (in this case a player) wants to dig their heels in and stay, then there is nothing the other (in this case the club) can do except honour the deal ... and if that happens we would be stuffed, both by effectively playing a million or more under what other teams get to play with, and by not being able to recruit replacements (since we won't have the cap room).

Parramatta tried to do a clean out and force players under contract out ... they paid several players to play for other clubs and couldn't replace them with any quality. they then found themselves anchored to the wrong end of the table

But we aren't talking about a clean out, we are talking about moving on two players effectively - Bird and Boyd. Bird will have suitors, you can be sure about that. Boyd on the other hand, it is just not going to happen, he's too old and too banged up, I'm aware of that.

But even getting back half of Bird's wage is likely to give 350-500k (depending on which article you read), that is money that will go a long way to keeping that far more important young guys like TPJ, Su'A, Lodge, Oates and Isaako.

If the trade off in losing Bird and paying someone else to play him is that we keep those five, even without another signing, it is more than worth it.

Retire him - either formally or "medically"
Really hard to get a medical retirement unless the exact circumstances apply look at Matai and Stewart, their money still counted towards the cap.

Ultimately you have to move on players other clubs want and you need to be saving cash by doing so.

I think we are better off sticking with Boyd. If he is fit then he represents ok value. Bird will depend on how little you have to pay. If he is on 800K you would want 600K covered and get a decent halfback. Like Boyd, Bird has the potential to come good when he regains fitness and some form.

The big issue with the list is halfback and hooker depth. We need to take from another area to improve it.

Ali reporting that the Leeds Rhinos are looking to sign Jason Demetriou from 2019 as head coach.
Interesting what that means for the Broncos head coach role moving forward, although I am not convinced that the Broncos would go down the path of a rookie NRL coach again..

Good old Ali

Alright **** it, lets be the first to give the Walker bros their shot at first grade. 3 year deal.

Bennett's doing the right thing by putting faith in Bird for next year. We can all agree that he's been CRAP this year, but he's still a quality player: I reckon he'll be really good for us next season & obviously so does Bennett.

EDIT: the alternative is possibly watching him dominate for some parasitic club like the roosters who get him on 350k. I'd rather roll the dice and have him on board. He'll repay us.

Many questioned Roberts in his first season here and for good reason but he has repaid since

The reason bennett has lasted longer then any other coach and had more success then any other coach is mainly due to one thing us fans dont have....

Patience.. he knows talent doesnt dissapear, good footballers with the right attitude remain good footballers with the right attitude given the right environment... boyd, milford, bird, and gillett will all come good and hit great form at some stage... However, a premiership will only come once/if they all do it at the same time...

then good thing you're not the coach

So we're chasing a Halfback who is so shit that he couldn't crack the team in 15 rounds behind guys like Keiran Foran, Jeremy Marshall-King, Matt Frawley & Fa'amanu Brown?

Sounds good.
