Rugby Confidential: Wallaby prospect Izaia Perese set to sign with NRL’s Broncos from 2020

JULY 26, 2018

THE whispered links between boom rugby rookie Izaia Perese and the Brisbane Broncos are now deafening.
We recently revealed that Perese had spoken to the NRL club about a code switch for next year, but given he is contracted to the Queensland Reds he has not been able to get a release.
However, our Brisbane snouts tell us that Perese is all but a done deal to join the Broncos in 2020.
It means the 21-year-old will either be forced to play out the season next year with the Reds, or given an early release.
Perese has told friends he has his heart set on playing in the NRL.
The Broncos want Perese next year, with winger Corey Oates looking at a move to Sydney, and insiders say they'd be willing to pay a release fee to the Reds and Rugby Australia for the Wallaby squad member.
But it seems they'll also hold out for another year to get their hands on the speedster if he is made to see out his contract.
Perese would be a huge loss for rugby. His power and speed have made him one of the most dynamic outside backs in the country, although he has been dogged by injury during his young career.

"Jack Bird had a setback in recovery from sternum surgery. Unfortunately the surgical wound wasn’t healing, so he went back to hospital earlier this week to have it re-stitched. He now has drain in place to collect the excess fluid. Bennett thinks Bird is unlikely to play in 2018"

Why james Roberts on the wing?

I heard he dropped sweet and sour sauce in it which affected the healing process.

Why james Roberts on the wing?

Because we have to fit Jack Bird in there somewhere. I also really like the combination of Boyd and Oates on the left edge.

Bird's combination with Holmes was premiership winning quality, could be the same with him and Roberts.

To me, Roberts looks like he's a bit worn out and the defence can seem to take a toll on him. Stick him out on the wing, keep his body fairly fresh and just let him run.

Would love to see him returning kicks.. could carve sides to shreds

I am huge fan of Glenn always have and will be. He is just pure class. Takes care of himself works hard and has always been club first. But I also know that if it is him or TPJ. I would say love you but goodbye. The same thing with Kahu. They have done their jobs well but younger better options have arrived. These are not our stars these are our solid hard workers.

Problem is and this has been done before that when you let go of older guys and think you have the answer in younger guys it erodes culture and creates a leadership vacuum. Any successful team has a mixture. You still need the Thorn and Peteros of the world. Thaiday was still playing ISC in 2006, three years after his debut his NRL progression from 2003- was 1 game, 8 games, 14 and then 20 in 2006.

Sims and Clinton were going to be the forward leaders and we could afford to let Petero go because the future was so bright.

We are trying to cultivate a modern version of the broncos culture with this young group.

I think you missed the point.

19 year olds don't teach other 19 year olds too much. You need older players to have lived it and done it to still be around the club.

With Thaiday and Sims moving on, players like Glenn will be invaluable because young forwards playing and keep playing without disruption is 0 chance- see Thaiday example.

I don't think we're losing much at all with Thaiday, Sims and Glenn moving on. We still have plenty of experience.

Darius Boyd

Matt Gillett

Josh McGuire

Andrew McCullough

I think they are more than enough in terms of stability and leadership.

I'm seriously glad as a club we dont take advice from people on here. On what planet is it a good idea to lose all the experience and replace it with promising kids? We have done it before, and we got burned badly. Its not just about leadership on the field either. These youngsters need role models off the field and in and around the team to look to when things arent going great. IF they are getting out of line, somebody needs to pull their heads in. You need a good leadership group and imo we are already struggling for one as it is without losing a lot of good professionals.

I'm sure if Glenn and Kahu for example get offered huge money at say the Warriors or the Titans we would be happy to let them do whats best for their careers ( Bennett rarely stands in the way of players who can get better financial deals ), but at the same time its comical how some fans on here seem to think we can just push them out of the door and get rid of them while they are under contract. Some people are so fickle. I get we have some great young talent coming through, but a lot of them have achieved nothing. At the moment everyone is on the Staggs bandwagon, but if Shibasaki came in next game and had a half decent game he would be the one that everyone suddenly wants in the team. It happens time and time again. And a lot of people crying out for these kids to play have seen very little of them. If you judged a players form on what they were doing in ISC instead of how much hype was around them, everyone would be crying out for Carrigan to be included over Mago or Haas for example. For a 20 year old in his first year playing against men, he has been immense. People generally on here dont see it though because he doesnt have the same hype as Haas or Fifita.
