Broncos Player Movements and Rumours 2013

In terms of potential willingness to leave their club and signing elsewhere, and also that meets our needs, then obviously James Maloney. For mine he's been the buy of the season (along with SBW). He would have solved a lot of our issues.

For the record, I'm delighted we didn't sign Soward and was never sold on Widdop and am actually glad we did not sign him. I also don't blame our club for not signing outside backs - we were willing to back Yow Yeh which I am more than able to understand and Copley was an unfortunate injury.

In those regards, I am quite happy with the inactivity we have shown in the transfer market. I just wished we continued to show it in regards to Prince.

Hopefully the club shows some good intent. We obviously need a fullback, half and probably an outside back, and we should more than have enough money to fill a couple of those needs, even if it is as Pete says, by buying the up and coming players.

I'm pretty sure Maloney was only ever prepared to go to Sydney because thats where his family is and he wanted to be there with him

Because Dane was given many chances and didn't pull his act together, so he definitely needed a change of environment, same reason why I originally supported chasing up Dugan. I don't get what is so difficult about this...

You do understand the meaning of the word trials, don't you? He didn't need to take them by storm, just outperform Norman in the first place, and Prince in the second place. But yeah, I guess we shouldn't have brought competition for poor old Hunt at all... :001_rolleyes:

It's nowhere near that simple. Griffin has what I think is an obvious bias towards Norman.

And even ignoring that, it doesn't mean it is correct to not give Hunt a chance. Thurston was a bit part player at the Dogs and the Cowboys gave him a chance to establish himself at halfback by playing many games in that position. Ditto with Cooper Cronk. I'm sure at the time there would have been options for those clubs to chase a Prince like player but instead they gave their young player a chance to be a half. Fact is Hunt was never given that same vote of confidence, and fact is he should have been.

Look at Hunt's career game history:

http://stats.rleague.com/rl/scorers/players/B/Ben_Hunt.html

He has played 71 first grade games and only TWICE in the entire history of his career as he started in the halves in consecutive rounds. This includes the small stint he had last year where he started at five eight against the Dogs and Storm, two games where I thought we as a team showed promise in attack.

That is in no way a chance at playing half. Imagine trying to establish your career as a playmaker when you are playing from the bench 9/10 times and then being thrust into the team every now and then.

Ah, fair enough then. Wish Cooper felt the same way!

Hi guys, first time poster, been lurking for a few weeks....

I'm not quite as negative as some on our recruitment but i think it is lacking, especially the last 2 years or so. To answer the qusetion above, here is a list i can think of of players that have been off contract in the last 2 years that i think would have improved our squad:
Dean Whare
Junior Sau
Beau Ryan (better than Maranta imo)
Michael Gordon
Justin Horo
Richie Fa'aoso
Dane Nielson
Aiden Guerra
Krisnan Inu
James Maloney
James Segeyaro
James Roberts
Anthony Cherrington
Konrad Hurrell
Michael Jennings
DCE
Keiran Foran
Edrik Lee
Jack wighton
Jarrod Croker
Blake Ferguson
TLL
Dave Shillington
Andrew Fifita
Nate Myles
Aiden Sezer
Matt Srama
Jorje Taufua
Will Chambers
Sisa Waqa
Ben Matulino
Trent Merrin
Kane Linnett
Tariq sims
Josh Mansour
Chris McQueen
Tautau Moga
Sam Kasiano
Martin Tapau
Anthony Milford
Josh Papali

I understand we cannot sign all of them but to me they are all better options than Stagg/Prince/Civo/Kemp. If we didnt at least ask about most of these players there are potential issues with recruitment, if we asked and they said no, there are massive issues with the management of the club.

Cheers,

Good first up contribution. Most of those I wouldn't have even tried to touch. Beau Ryan, for example, was showing career-best form so wouldn't have been cheap, and in reality was only following his mates. Ferguson is as bad as Dugan. And a heap of them were given extensions after debuting as depth players, or long-term juniors, so were never really on the market (Hurrell, Lee, Wighton, Srama, Sezer, Moga, etc).

So Big Dave you've disliked my post, why? where is the rebuttal?

Widdop, Chased him club didn't want to match what the Dragons offered.. questionable and people will debate for ages about worth but fact is he was there we chased him but didn't feel the need to pay overs. Can see both points.
Dugan, Chased him he fucked up fair enough.
Carney, He was never leaving the Sharks everyone knew that.
Farah, Again was never leaving the Tigers so what's the point?

Albert Kelly...
Could build for the future with him, however will he hold form and will he take a decent amount?
Ryan Stig.... I like him, However he doesn't offer anything that Hunt/Capewell and others at the club don't already offer.

There are a fair few forwards, however we don't need forwards there are none that would change the club enough to warrant chasing when you consider Money to talent ratio.
That's exactly my point!

Financeguy (welcome by the way) named a whole list of people that either... We don't need, were too expensive or didn't want to leave their club. Most of the quality people on that list would come at a cost in no way comparable to the cost of Civo, Prince, Stagg or Kemp.
Besides, most names on that list would've caused an uproar, should they have been recruited, while some others, well... What can I say!

Beads apparently would like the club to advertise in the media when and whom we are chasing, and because we didn't announce we were vying for Cooper Cronk, Thurston or DCE's services, hence... Our recruitment is poor!

Sign him and his younger brother. Sick of the Raiders and Storm getting the cream of the crop from QLD.

You know why though right? The scouts at the Broncos think they are too good to step foot in Logan.
You only need to look at the names that have come from that area the past few years. I will make a list but I'm getting a massage atm

More dribbling from you. I don't give a stuff if the club advertises who they want to sign in the media. What I want them to do is sign players that make the club a better team and a premiership chance.

So do I ffs!

The difference is that such players are not and have not been realistically available, but you are just choosing to be autistic to that...

His history in the halves is pretty ugly, 1 win from I think 11 games, though 6 of those losses were to teams that finished in the top 4 that year.

They have been though. You seem to be making excuses for the club when you know as much as I do. How do you know how much of an attempt at Thurston, DCE or Cronk the club made? Realistic or not if the club was serious I believe they could make it happen. This gets back to the attitude of the club and just expecting players to call the club and say "please sign me".. Gone are those days. The club needs to be more pro active in regards to recruitment. We've lost our best young prospect in Norman ( that is debatable though) and now the club is twiddling its thumbs.

Tell that to Michael Hancock.

Okay, now we're talking!

I don't think the club could've realistically made any of those happen, because those players were always going to take less money to stay at their clubs.
I'm not sure about Cronk tbh, but I know for a fact we made a play for Thurston and DCE, and this is not from the journos, take that with as much salt as you want, but my source has not failed me, ever! Most of the times, he won't confirm or doesn't know, but when he does, it's always correct.

Up until this year, the club had a course set, which is one of the reasons they didn't push hard and throw a blank cheque at those guys. The other reason is that a massive salary for one player would cost us other important players.

Norman's departure has changed things, but the panorama out there has changed as well.
I don't understand how you're saying that the club is twiddeling its thumbs, as there is really no one available that will satisfy our requirements, except maybe Carney, and that guy has apparently refused a $900k / year offer from the Warriors, and will remain at the Sharks for 2/3 of that. Do you think we should up the ante even more to get him? I don't.

Who else is out there? Dugan who is a total fuckwit, and Sam Tomkins whom, as good as he is in the ESL, is way too expensive for a gamble at NRL level.

Only ones left are promising young guys, whom realistically have nothing over Hunt yet. Speaking of, maybe he has what it takes, but he hasn't shown nearly enough for me to believe it, and apparently the same goes for the club hierarchy.

We may as well run with Prince and Wallace as haves next season now unless we can find a quality option which is unlikely. What I'd like the club to do is find a fullback. I know Kahu could be a possibility but he isn't even playing fullback at Q cup. Hoffman for mine is a winger/centre he has just been so good in the position. There is quite a few young fullbacks in the under 20's worth chasing. If we lose Hunt our depth in the halves will be really fucked. We need to start addressing these areas now because if we wait too long there really will be nothing left worth signing.

WTF? How clueless are you? :loool:
