Totally agree. I'd offer no more than $300k, even then I actually don't really want to go that high. Yes he played origin but it was in a side decimated by injuries and he scored two excellent tries but other than that, he ran the ball back softly and got pushed backwards almost every run. He is a threat on the try line of the opposition but nothing else at this stage. Yes he will come good and be elite most likely but he isn't there yet, not even close. The club needs to start standing up to these unproven kids.

I suspect Coates doesn't want to go anywhere, he loves the club but I bet his manager is pushing him to do these things so he can get a fatter bonus from an inflated contract. Unfortunately, our management is incompetent and will likely give him what his manager wants.

But I suppose if you take a big step back and look at Glenn and his career / achievements through the lens above, his record captaining teams is very poor and he really hasn’t achieved much at all, particularly not in the last 5 or so years (no longer in the Kiwi team). He’s no Hodges, that’s for sure.

I'd wager Glenn, Kahu, and Joe O would be/were the ringleaders if this has any truth behind it
 
Don't stop there. Include Luke, Isaako, Riki...heck name all the kiwis and Polynesians too.

Usually when we think a player is first grade standard we get all excited and offer them a half a decade deal on over half a mil a year.

Good to see a sensible purchase. We're not buying or paying for Asiata out of pure hype.

Lets all remember that Kev said not long ago that Ofahengaue would be at the club next year.. I am hoping Lodge is on his way out regardless of what Kev has said about him staying. Would be good if it resulted in signing a better player more suited to the clubs direction.

Glenn and Kahu (who are best mates) are collective poster boys for the 'it's just a game' / 'put yourself above the team' / 'football is just a platform to develop your social media profile and business exploits' bandwagon.

From the outside its easy to feel like they don't care about the Broncos winning half as much as they care about ensuring their Instagram feeds are stacked full of content and they are taking in followers which they can try to monetise.

It's all business with those guys and they're only looking out for themselves by the looks of things. It's no wonder other players in the team took issue with this and we certainly played like a team whose leader was more concerned with which photo he's going to post from the sheds post game than actually winning the game.

FFS... It's not hard to develop a strategy to deal with this.

  • Several months BEFORE our player is allowed to start talking to another team, we offer him a competitive, but fair contract based 80% on on-field performance and 20% on potential for a 1-3 year period with NO player options.
  • Explain the reason for size / length the contract.
  • Make sure he's aware of his place in the team and in the Broncos plans moving forward.
  • Show him the countless examples of the Broncos players who have left young chasing $$$ from desperate clubs and thrown away their whole careers.
  • Tell him that it will be the only offer and he has 2 months to re-sign.
  • Make him aware that if he chooses to begin dialogue with any other clubs, then the Broncos offer will be pulled and he can choose from any remaining teams vying for his signature, but the Broncos will not be one of them.
We are far too content to let our star players meet with, chat to and engage with rival clubs and for some reason refuse to lock these players up BEFORE they even have the opportunity. This is EXACTLY how we lost Fifita - who we could have retained on reasonable money had we bothered to sign him up before we gave the Titans the chance to throw ridiculous money at him.

Look at the Roosters with Luke Keary... he was able to talk to clubs from November. Arguably the number one playmaker and half in the game let alone on the market - Big surprise... it's not even June and the roosters have re-signed him on a multi-year deal before any clubs even have the opportunity to make their case.

Lock up your talent BEFORE you allow a market to develop and have to compete in a bidding war. Play hardball, stand your ground and take away the option for players to shop themselves around without any consequence... all we are doing is opening up the opportunity for other teams to overpay and poach our talent. How can our organisation not understand this... it's been going on far too long.

What's your obsession with going back over old posts to try and get 'gotcha' moments? Like, nobody cares man. Every single person on this forum has made a bunch of poor predictions or suggestions, that includes you.

Don't take it too personally if someone has a dig at you. You must admit that some of your suggestions are pretty outlandish.

Don't agree with you on that one mate.

I hope Kevie makes Lodge captain, fully fit he's their leader out there.
