‘The Titans are circling Jahrome Hughes with Melbourne’s premiership-winning halfback set to explore $900,000 offers on the open market after the Storm failed to meet his asking price.
The Sunday Mail can reveal Hughes has become the most sought-after playmaker in the code with seven clubs — including the Gold Coast — expressing interest in the wake of his premiership triumph last month.'

Clearly a switch has been flicked - we have been turned off and Titans on.
Offering massive overs to every hyped up player, is not good management... in fact it will bite them in the ass sooner rather than later

The broncos offered Milford 1 million. Hughes has a premiership ring at least.

At the time Milford re-signed with us the Storm also offered him 900k, Bellamy clearly saw something in him

How were we re signing Fifita on 850k yet kevvy has come out and said not much money to make new signings... it doesn’t make much sense

Imagine if we’re actually still paying full price for jack bird to tear it up for the dragons...

I have a feeling the club were offering Fifita money that they didn’t have. They were banking on Macca not returning and Bird leaving. I also think as a fallback plan they would’ve been willing to not re-sign some other promising young players who are coming off contract shortly. As well as trying to push out Offa (reportedly to the dragons - which interestingly died down once the Bird deal looked likely and we lost Fifi). We have re-signed Herbie and Niu since then (as Niu’s father was threatening a move to Gold Coast) and if past negotiations are anything to go by, these deals could potentially be leaning far in to the players’ favour.

I’m basing this theory on Kev’s comments, bird’s comments, Seibold’s comments, and media reports. Also reflects sentiment shared by Smokin Joe and Wolfie. I give it extra weight due to White and co’s form of mismanagement and Nolan’s alleged questionable close relationship with the dodgey player manager that represents everyone who has recently bent us over and been handed a nonsense contract (Seibold included) by our club.

Now of course, this could all be a clever ruse by the club to hide a massive war chest that they have obtained through uncharacteristically savvy financial management, or maybe our notoriously loose lipped club has massive signing news they are keeping under wraps and are sitting on the announcement for no apparent reason. 🤷‍♂️

Surely you cannot simply accept the claim that the Titans are chasing him! I know this isn't the appropriate place for Titan discussion but with the media claim in mind I'd say the Titans will be more than happy with the 2020 version of Taylor. I know, contracts and all that but I'd have Taylor back in Brisbane in a heartbeat, at least this latest iteration. He's going gangbusters and getting better with his new, clear headspace.

Downplaying our cap position.

Its worked on most of the clubs fans ... hopefully, it also worked on the player agents, but I have my doubts

I don't like the idea that we're downplaying how much money we have free in the cap, just so we don't pay overs with new signings or re-signings. I'd much prefer that even if a player/player manager knows we have millions of free cap space, we tell them how much we think they're worth, and if they are looking for way more just tell them to get lost.
A strong stance now would set the precedent and you'd end up with only players that actually want to play for the Bronco's. Not a bunch of mercenaries. And besides we can't always cry poor in negotiations. Time to put on our big pants!!

I’ve heard numerous times now including one semi reliable source who knows someone in the inner sanctum of the club that the downplaying of the cap and the lack of player announcements is due to the Cameron Smith saga.

There is a belief that Cameron wants to play on but knows his time at Melbourne is up because he doesn’t want the club to lose Grant and Brendon as revealed in his new book. This puts us in a 2 way shootout with the Titans for his signature. From all reports we are in a more advantageous decision than the Titans from a financial point of view and can offer him a better deal now that we have freed up more space with Bird leaving.

The issue we have is the Titans currently have a more promising roster as it stands but if we sign Smith and get the best out of who is still at the club than we are still easily a finals team. Also don’t discount Kevin Walters relationship to Smith. I think once we know what Smith is doing is when we see more on the signings front. If Smith doesn’t end up coming to Brisbane, you will see us use the money put aside for him on other signings. We have to make signings anyway to full roster spots but the degree of player depends on whether we land the big fish or not.

When you piece it all together it makes sense why everything has been super quiet with pre season just around the corner and zero announcements from the club so I’m leaning towards there being some truth to this.

Sam McIntyre has signed with the Titans, another young 2nd rower. Piakura is almost certainly staying with us.

If this were true (which I highly doubt), I'm going to go out on a limb and say I don't want Smith simply because he won't come. He will string us along, players we want and need will sign elsewhere and then boom, sorry got ya guys again!

This side is not premiership ready, not even close. Yes Smith will make them all better but he isn't coming into a gun system like he is used to and he's old, coming to Brisbane will see him constantly injured because our medical department is an absolute joke. He'll take up a massive part of the cap even if he did come (which he won't) and sit on the bench recovering from (insert injury here).

I'd much prefer to chase Allan, Su'A and Gagai / someone else who I reckon we could get with his money on its own (if we even have it there).

As much as I would love the spectacle of a season with Smith in charge and could finally have a captain worthy of the role since Hodges, I tend to agree. We should probably avoid temptation and instead use that money to begin a build toward the future, and chuck a lucrative post-footy contract at Smith in some kind of coaching role.

Harry Grant would’ve been a huge get, Cam Smith will be an interesting one that could potentially burn us pretty hard.

As you said, Su’a and Allen would be top priority, then Gagai on the right money to bring experience to the backs. Then move our attention to upgrading either Milford or Turpin or both to better options.

1. Corey Allan
2. Corey Oates
3. Will Chambers
4. Kotoni Staggs
5. Xavier Coates
6. Anthony Milford
7. Thomas Dearden
8. Payne Haas
9. Ben Hunt
10. Josh McGuire
11. Ben Te’o
12. Jaydn Su’a
13. Patrick Carrigan

I think this looks like a respectable line up.

Are you saying Parker in 2016 wasn’t worthy of being a broncos captain?

Except he owns a house on the Gold Coast and his kids go to school at the Gold Coast, and has already let known his preference.

I disagree with Oates, Chambers, and Teo, and I’m not super excited about Hunt or McGuire. Though out of those 4 I’d probably take McGuire. I’d also start TPJ.
