According to nrl.com, the Titans are interested in Coates (of course they are) and we’ve offered an upgraded deal. Why we have offered an upgraded deal I have no idea. He isn’t worth that much yet.

maybe we should just pay him whatever it takes to keep him, if that means massive overs, then so be it ... otherwise the "fans" will just whinge about what a mess the club is in

I haven't read the article, but a typical translation of 'upgraded deal' is an upgrade of their existing contract, which would be expected since Coates is on his rookie contract.

Unless the article says something along the lines of "following the titans interest the broncos are understood to have increased their initial offer", which would suggest we are happy to get into a bidding war... Although I would suggest that our cap position in 2022 means we can outspend any other club in the comp

Yeah say upgraded deal and mentions that no titans officials have made contact with him , so the media just throwing the titans in the mix because he grew up on the Coast.

I haven’t seen a single comment that hasn’t said we should spend big to keep Coates. Everyone is saying hopefully he stays but he isn’t worth that much.

Would be a great signing for the right price. I think I mentioned his name as a potential option before. Great clubman and huge utility value.

They’ll also sign C. Smith “if he’s interested and it fits in their cap”.

Probably to a train and trial deal as I hear he’s a bit of a journeyman that still hasn’t achieved a great deal in the game...

Surely the NRL must get suspicious of their cap at some point?!

Exactly. Posters have rightly complained that he should have already been locked up and rightly unhappy that he looks like he is happy to leave despite loving the club but no one has said he should be paid big. He shouldn't be paid big, he is a currently a massive work in progress with several big flaws in his game. This is yet again an issue with management, not the fact he is currently apparently fielding big offers that we shouldn't be matching but shouldn't have had to be matching in the first place.

On a more positive note, I’m optimistic about him staying. He loves the club, has only had 1 or 2 days of training with Kev due to playing origin forcing his break to go longer. His last taste of life at the broncos was winning a spoon under Seibold. A couple of weeks under Kevvie would make him feel far more comfortable committing. On top of that he has previously said how much he idolised fellow PNG player David Mead, who he will now be training next too and getting advice from.

Absolutely agree, the 3 things that got us in this huge mess is:
1. Choosing Milford over Hunt... I know Hunt hasn’t done well at the dragons but he played so well for us and never felt that pressure he does now

only season Hunt wasn’t better was 2016 in 2015 and 17 when Hunt and Milford were the halves Hunt was by far better. Hunt was our most important player and the fall off since his exit is proof

I have very strong mail that Brandon Smith will be playing for a South-East Queensland NRL club in 2021. Strong enough that I'm willing to stake my reputation on it.

Can't say for certain if it's us or the Titans, but I would lean towards the Titans purely because of the circumstances (No established hooker / Melbourne connection with Proctor & Fa'asuamaleaui)
