some quotes from everyone's favourite board member, Karl Morris, re: Cam Smith. The article from Badel has the headline "Brisbane Broncos emerge as shock candidates to sign NRL legend Cameron Smith".

“Look, who wouldn’t want Cam Smith, he is a legend of the game,” he said.

“But I can honestly say I haven’t spoken to him and I don’t know anyone at the Broncos who has spoken to him.

“The ball is in his court. If Cam called any club tomorrow and said he wanted to play for them, including the Broncos, you would send a limousine to his house.

“Which of the 16 clubs would not want Cam on their books? But we haven’t had any talks so we haven’t had any plans to sign him.”

the article also claims that the Titans has the cap space available but Cam Smith never responded to Mal's approach
Do these fucking geniuses realise they’re supposed to do the calling? This isn’t the 90’s Broncos, we don’t have an entire state lining up to play for us. We need to make that effort and phone the damn players. This explains our signings over the last few years. The dumb asses in charge forgot it was their job after Bennett left.

"Can't someone else do it"?

There is a PR line and there is a behind closed doors line.

And there’s a phone line that players have to call to get a job here. It hasn’t been given out in a few years which is why we only sign players like Copley and Mead these days

Titans:
Outs - Boyd, Cartwright, some others, a salary cap, being also rans, wooden spoon?
Ins - Fifita, Tino, Ese'ese, some others, no salary cap, being respectable

Broncos:
Outs - Boyd, Fifita, Bird, Joffa, Staggs (for half the season), respect, heavyweight status, pride, Seibold
Ins - Mead, Copley, Asiata, Kevvie, laughter, also ran status, give up attitude, wooden spoon

How is it even arguable about which one is better? It is not being negative to call it as it is, it is realistic and just as it is realistic to live in hope the season result is far better than what the current evidence suggests it will be but that is all it is, hope based on 'hopefully this season won't have as many problems / injuries as last year' while Oates, Milford, Haas, Staggs, Farnworth all currently sit on the side line rehabbing = does not bode well for much different already.

The big in for the titans is no salary cap, opens up rooster levels of opportunity.

TBF; Boyd, Bird and Ofahengaue provided next to nothing the last 2 seasons, so I doubt we’ll notice their ‘out’ at all.

Indeed, without them stinking it up and / or being a salary cup sponge whilst rehabbing yet another season ending injury, we might even benefit.

I think it all hinges on just how bad Seibold really was. Is he in fact the worst NRL coach for all time? And is Kevvie at least mediocre.

we will soon see. No doubt Titans have had a far better result from the player market.

Not trying to be argumentative however i feel there some important things you are missing.

Boyd, Bird and Joffa didnt add much at all last season or the season before. Boyd was a liability, Bird didnt get on the park and Joffa was far from his best.

This season Staggs will be back 1/3 way through. Asiata is more versatile than Joffa. Riki moves into the back row, Oates if he bulks up can be good in the back row for short spells. Our whole backline was on a steep learning curve last year, and as shit as the season was they would have learnt and matured from it.

Glenn will be back with more game time. Lodge is back from his undiagnosed broken leg. TJP had to learn some hard lessons, Haas will be used for more useful spells rather than 80min flat out.

The coach has a clue this year. Theres finally some good mentors in and around training, which werent there last year at all. Its a mega change.

These are all fair points you've raised, it isn't argumentative at all, it is all very true and well argued. I absolutely agree Boyd, Joffa and Bird are in reality no loss as they have all offered little to nothing over the last few years but at their best, they were all really good to elite players, so to not have them in the squad, especially when replaced by the likes of Mead, Copley and Asiata, it is at best a sideways step, maybe on a good day a marginable improvement. It certainly isn't remotely close to replacing Boyd with Tino, Hipgrave with Fifita, that's for sure.

I did totally forget about Arrow, he is a huge loss for the Titans but again, not withstanding the VERY good additions the Broncos have made in the assistant coaches department (and I am a big fan of ALL these improvements), the squad itself is worse or parallel with last year. The Titans have undoubtedly improved.

I will also say in fairness, Holbrook was a massive reason why the Titans have improved so much, I am really, really, really hoping Kevvie and his team will have a similar effect and while I fully expect this season to be another write off, I also fully expect the side to be significantly better and primed to be up there again in '22 but not because of evidence thus far, purely because of hope and the knowledge this coaching team HAS to be significantly better than the sorry excuse of whatever the Seibold regime was.

These......
I just dont see how the titans can compete even at full strength.

Taylor isnt and wont deliver. Tino and Fifi are one thing, but neither are smart enough to be 70min game pillars. They are both unfortunately at best short and sharp and stretegically played.

Mead & Copely sure they arent world beaters, but we arent relying on them to be game breakers. Their signing is for a roster spot and older heads. Our backline has 10x the talent they do. Boyd, Bird etc were actually a hinderance to the team, attitude, on field performance, lack of on field performance. Add sebiold and his inability to get the team on board.....id say we are again so far ahead even though we havnt pulled in superstars.

Once the halves and middle start firing i just cannot see how the titants have it over us.

Because the Broncos have the Broncos factor.

I'm on the fence about holbrook, it's easy to understand the excitement but there's still plenty of questions that will be answered this season. Titans had the luxuries of no expectation and also an easier draw .
There will be plenty of expectation after all the hype and also a lot of teams not taking them lightly, it will be a big season for some of their players coming of good seasons aswell.
