On the Broncos Weekly podcast which featured a Chris Garry, he mentioned that:

- he is confident we will re-sign dearden, pikuara and Walsh but most likely short term
- the club is looking for a utility forward and a spine player
- Club was talking to Capewell, his manager wants $550k but broncos feel he’s worth around $450k
-rival clubs believe staggs statement on staying loyal isn’t genuine and offers are still coming in
-club keeping an eye on how Karmichael goes in Q Cup

Sounds like the club is starting to get things together which is great. And I am really happy they have spoken to Capewell but I agree, $550k is too much.

While I agree we need a spine player and a utility forward our biggest weakness seems to be our outside backs. Without staggs we lack strike and defensively they are shocking. I would have liked opacic, Walters, asiata and Capewell, with maybe 1 more journeyman outside back like mead and Copley. Happy to wait for Walsh and cobbo to fight it out for fullback

Cobbo plays center aswell

I really dont get some people on here. Using hannant as disrespect? A player who played 245 first grade games, 12 origins (in the period of dominance when qld had good depth at prop), 6 for for Australia and won a premiership? I thought hannant was a great team player, who did the unpretty things (the tackling, the hit ups, the 1 percenters that let his team mates capitalise upon). Also a very well respected player in the league community who never caused issues at any club he played for.

Carrigan is a tackle bot? So now we criticise a player for getting through a solid workload in defence, when our primary issue last year was our defence? So from my assessment of many on here, we just want the flash players who dont want to do the dirty work for their team or sticking his hand up to play longer minutes because he team had been ravaged by injuries?

We have so many on here criticising the recruitment and retention of the broncos, for recruiting the big kids who just run over smaller kids (get an ego and fizzle when they cant do the same consistently against men), but here we have someone who shows a strong work ethic and he is trash?

A squad is about balance, look at the storm: finucane, bromwiches, kafusi, hardly flash players but they do their job which allows the munsters, papenhuyzens, smiths to work from that.

A team requires honest hard workers. Carrigan has stuff to work on as he had stated himself.
It’s not disrespect, but some people on here say he is amazing etc. He is solid. Know what you’re going to get with him and consistent. Just hasn’t done anything overly impressive and has been part of our worst season ever. Jury is still out on all of our forwards to be honest. A team with a good forward pack never comes last. Yet we did. So all the hype around our forwards is extremely questionable until they do something to prove otherwise.

To be fair he's only been around for a full season and a bit , and like you said our worst season ever . Yet he was one of the
most consistent and has still got plenty of learning to do , most forwards don't blossom till mid 20's and yet he's one of our best. Has to mean something being this consistent at such a young age, plus he's switched on and has a great attitude. He'll be a Bronco for life and a good one.

The forward pack like everywhere else was ravaged with injuries.

The below forward pack is based on the number of appearances in 2020.

A full strength forward pack won't have Issac starting (or likely in the 17), Flegs won't start (and will be competing for a spot each week). There will also be no Teo, Kennedy or Hopoate... that is literally the worst bench I have ever seen. Teo played the 16 games, third most from the forwards behind Haas and Carrigan.

So this year we effectively add Lodge, Turpin, Riki and Asiata to the pack (and it could be argued that we are also adding TPJ given he only played 9 games)... for the loss Fifita (who was underwhelming last year anyway). Whilst Flegler and one of Lodge or Carrigan drop back to the bench along with Asiata or TPJ, to make it infinitely better.

8. Flegler - 9/13 appearances starting (Offa 4)
9. Luke - 10/12 appearances starting (Turpin 6)
10. Haas - 17/17 appearances starting (Kennedy 3)
11. Fifita - 9/9 appearances starting (Glenn 5)
12. TPJ - 9/9 appearances starting (Teo 4)
13. Carrigan - 19/19 appearances starting (Offa 1)

14. Paix - 9/13 appearances from the bench (Luke, Tesi, Herbie 2)
15. Teo - 10/16 appearances from the bench (Joffa 7)
16. Kennedy - 9/13 appearances from the bench (Bullemor 7)
17. Hopoate - 9/12 appearances from the bench (Riki 4, Lodge 3)

I think for the sake of development Haas should drop to about 60 minutes a game, and Carrigan should come off the bench at prop.

Almost no middles are 80 minute players let alone guys in their 2nd / 3rd season. lolo wasn’t playing 80 consistently until like 5 years into his career and even now you could argue (correctly) that he is more effective with a spell. Full strength I’d like to see:

8. TPJ
9. Turpin (can hopefully handle 80)
10. Haas
11. Glenn
12. Riki
13. Asiata

14. Oates
15. Carrigan
16. Lodge
17. Flegler

I’ve said it before but our forward rotation on paper is league best. If Kev has them defending well, we can dominate the middle, and have quality across the bench.

Oates can cover 2nd row or help with a backline reshuffle in event of an injury.

Paix or eventually Walsh could earn themselves the #14 jersey of injury opens a spot, and Bullimore can fill in if needed.

I'd swap tpj and carrigan to have two potentially long lasting props

I agree in the 6 again era that Lodge and Fleger are bench middles. Gives Haas the opportunity to have more explosive stints whenever the coach feels we are under pressure getting out of our own end, throw a fresh Haas in there to start winning the yardage game up the middle.

Its lock forward that intrigues me; Asiata and Tevita can both play there, they are as close to what a modern lock looks like that we have at the club.

Do we rotate them both there during a game, does kev consider it a 80 minute role or mix and match depending upon opponent?

Its nice to have genuine choice for a change...

We need to identify who the #14 is. Paix, Luke...??....soemone else..? Carrigan and Piakura might benefit from some time in reserve grade, devleop their game without the spotlight...?

I don't recall the likes of Te'o, Offa, Hopoate, Paix, Kennedy or Luke being hyped yet they are the ones who made up the bulk of our forward pack in 2020. The list below shows our forward pack sorted by appearances. You'd have a better team if you inverted the list which goes to show how dire things were.

Carrigan
Haas
Te'o
Offa
Hopoate
Flegler
Paix
Kennedy
Luke
TPJ
Fifita
Glenn
Bullemor
Turpin
Lodge
Riki
Macca
Palasia

are you a bit happier now ...

sounds like they are doing some of the things you want, while pulling out if the price becomes overs.

but also they have realised that leaks are bad for business (and allows player managers to exploit us), so they've gone back to the Broncos of old and not talk about player movements (for the most part)

Yes absolutely, these are the kind of things I've been wanting to see.

Believe it or not, my negativity wasn't based on nothing you know but the club does seem to be turning it around and this is what I've been wanting to see, so more than happy to give credit where it is due.
