Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

I’m not sure what you are talking about here?

really?

did you not come onto BHQ (or facebook/twitter etc) a couple of years ago when people wanted every young player we had rushed into the side at the expense the older more experienced heads.

when every time the discussion turned to their retention, they whinged non stop if it looked like we weren't going to offer them enough to keep them. keep them at all costs was the ethos of Broncos fans ... even if that meant we had no experienced players left to guide them.

hell, you don't even have to go back a couple of years ... just go back a month. the tide is only now starting to turn (for some people) with Dearden

Worst debut in club history? Now I know you're not thinking clearly!!
Yeh, I agree. Sure he did some selfish things, but he was probing around and looking rather dangerous before he got gassed. He’s new to the club, been playing ISC all year and only got called up to play V’landysball early in the week, then had to defend for about 30mins straight.

And he can pass crisp, direct balls off the deck, so he’s already one up on Turpin.

My big fear is that we spend big re-signing these kids the club I scared of
loosing and just hope they come good. It won’t work and it’ll set us back 2-3 years when Kev ultimately gets the sack and the next poor bastard has to try and rebuild the roster again while dealing with Staggs, Coates, Flegler, and Dearden taking up half the cap.
It just seems like the club has a serious case of FOMO and it's just hurting the make-up of their roster. To be honest the damage is already done with the supposed $650,000 deal for Flegler and $400,000 deal for Piakura. It's difficult to tell Staggs' agent he's only worth $500,000 when we've paid a huge amount to a player who should be in reserve grade right now.

Levi cruelled whatever momentum the Broncos had with the worst play possible in that situation, his defence in the middle was poor and his service was nothing to write home about.

So yeah, the worst debut in club history which culminated in one of the worst losses in club history.

assuming those figures are accurate.

Staggs offer is taking a similiar path to the magical values reported for Bird, whose contract value jumped for years depending on who reported it.

so far we've seen $2.4 million over 4 years; $2.8 million over 4 years and then Badel hedged is bets by adding "up to" $2.8 million over 4 years;

Broncos have rarely bought players .. and on the odd occasions when they do, they've rarely worked out ... it's been that way since the early Bronco days.

although I agree, since the NRL don't care about development, we should adapt to the times and make some strategic purchases.
I might be totally misunderstanding the Australian vernacular here so maybe someone can explain. When people say we are reluctant to 'buy' a world class player are we actually paying the club he is coming from to allow us to pay him to play for us?

What is the difference if we pay someone from another club $400K to play as a second-rower as opposed to us paying a player coming through our system $400K to play as a second-rower?

So when BHQ members say Broncos rarely buy players, what are they actually trying to say. Is it simply - we don't like signing players who have not gone through our system?

Because if this is what it actually means I think the club needs to seriously take a long hard look at this archaic philosophy as it's plainly obvious it does not work. Indeed, I'd go as far as to say it has led to the ruination of this club. Further, If Walsh turns out to be as good as everyone thinks he will the Warriors just proved it's far better to 'buy' a player who is identified as being outstanding in his position.

I thought the media was pretty consistent with their $900,000 figure. Sometimes Buzz would round it up to a million but otherwise he was still being paid nearly twice what he was worth. In fact some of his performances were so bad he should have been paying the Broncos.

Meanwhile the media has been consistent with Flegler, Piakura and Staggs' deals so far. The re-signings seem to be the priority which is really odd for a wooden spoon team.

they were in the end ... but in the first year or 2 that figure bounced anywhere from 750k right up to 1.1 million

edit: with Fleglers deal while they have been consistent, someone speculated in here that the upgrade figure included an upgrade to the current year, not just the extended years. this comment was liked by Smokin Joe (who seems to be one of the few with some inside knowledge) this would lower it from the 650k a year.

p.s. just because the media are consistent in some cases, doesn't mean they are also correct

They aren’t seriously considering paying coates 500k? That’s absolutely fucked. The dude is fringe first grade m, that’s fast and can “sometimes” jump high.... who’s lost in defence.

Ordinarily I'd agree but it's difficult to argue when the club has constantly cried poor whenever recruitment has come up. Obviously they've over-spent somewhere because the current crop of guys clearly can't get the job done.

But an Origin player also

Dogs on the other hand have made a few good signings this season, are starting to develop some attack, and have some big names coming next year which will keep fans and other players interested in being apart of the team. They have some real hope for the future.

I really am not understanding the concept of prioritising re-signings.

Yep, there is little for us to be excited about as it currently stands, pretty depressing. Hopefully, Donuts will be announced with some important signings in tow.

****BADEL WARNING****
From the Courier Mail:
  • Just 11 players will survive to be part of our top 30 next season
  • we have 13 players off contract
  • of those 13, only 4 will be safe for next year (Nui, Staggs, Coates, Dearden)
  • we will have more than $3 million to spend
  • the following contracted players need to lift their game or risk being axed/offloaded under subsidized deals: Matt Lodge, Corey Oates, Tom Flegler, Richie Kennar and Rhys Kennedy.
  • Croft, who is on 450k must left or face being moved on (sounds like at the end of his deal, which has another year to run)
  • Kevvie is pleased with the progress of Pat Carrigan, Herbie Farnworth, Jamayne Isaako, Ethan Bullemor and Jake Turpin
  • We're in talks with Adam Reynolds

Kevvie quotes (reference to a roster review):

“I am doing that, definitely,” Walters said.

“A little bit has to happen for us to do what we want to do with this roster.

“We have played some good teams so far this season and I now have a fair idea in my head of what I want to do, who I want to keep, and I’m working towards that over the next month or so.”

Kevvie quotes (on current roster):

“I’m more than happy to be working with the current roster we have and it’s my job to get some more improvement out of the players,” he said.

“The roster in every organisation is a work in progress.

“Some rosters are more stable than others but everyone is always looking to improve their rosters and we’re the same.”
