Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

I think what we need the most are players that enjoy playing football. I wonder what came first though. Their shot attitudes or losing everything they’ve ever done. None of these players deserve to be re-signed. Let them all go elsewhere.

We're 7 rounds in and i think we've seen enough now and its time to pull the trigger. Genuine hard edge smart footy players who know how to win is what we need.

I think we put 500-550 on the table for staggs and 300 for dearden in the background and put all focus on the halves. it's fact that milf is on 1 mil a year and as far as im concerned if we need to pay a million for a straight swap to get Reynolds or even Moses in just do it. We're at the point we need to pay overs so just throw 1 million straight up at any elite half (or grant).

Once a genuine half is locked in i think we palm off Flegler. There will be someone surely willing to take him for 500,000 given his potential. Ideally i offer him to Melbourne for smith. Or let them have Coates for smith.

I know alot are against bringing the cheese here but the bloke is a deadset footy player and competes tooth and nail every second. He is 100% what this side needs in my eyes. He would come in and put our boys to shame with his effort. If you throw B. Smith in the team beside Reynolds/Moses for the loss of all 3 of milf, Flegs and Coates i think immediately we are a different side.

Its time to cut the shit, pick two high profile targets and go hard at them. Put milf behind you and spend his million a season now before there's no one left to buy. Pull your finger out or we will be looking at 3 wooden spoons in a row.

I’d go after SJ and Moses (assuming Arey is a lost cause). Get them signed for 1.8ish between them and throw whatever scraps are left at who we want to keep, if they walk who cares.

thoughts on Tyrone May for our halves? he's fallen down the pecking order at the Panthers and is off contract

Why is there no talk about bringing Benji back again? I thought he was solid in his year with us and he's still doing good things for Souths - apart from a couple of defensive issues he did a stellar job at centre for them yesterday. He's just what we need to help mentor these younger guys and his experience in reading the game would be invaluable. He wouldn't break the bank either. Could we get him up here again?

We need leadership. Hands down the #1 thing we are lacking right now. And getting some in is the only way this shit show is going to turn around.

Agree we need to stop being held to ransom, if that's actually what's going on. By all reports Dearden/Staggs/Coates love the club and don't want to leave. Could the delays be due to waiting on DD to rubber stamp the deals, rather than the media beat-ups that these guys want more-more-more? Or am I giving the club too much credit... No way should the Cows be able to prise Dearden from us for under $350k. And Staggs should have his offer dropped substantially, immediately.
Can Karmichael do a benji for us?

Can Karmichael do a benji for us?
Good question, and I'm not sure but I think we'll find out sooner rather than later. I'm honestly hoping KHunt can be a big part of the solution, but it does still leave us without a game manager cos I'm pretty sure he won't be that, this year at least.

I keep coming back to the likely effects of the sunk cost falicy with the R&R team. They dearly want the darts that were thrown at the wall with their young recruits to come good. A sense of ego that says our top players must come through our development pathways or they’ll look shit at their job. It’s the only reason I can think of for our lack of key position recruitment over the last few years. If the recent talk is accurate about not looking outside the club at the moment, then it’s just doubling down on a poor hand.

How have our mighty Broncos gotten to a point where we do not have at least one world class player in our spine. Like not even close. Seriously, how many injuries would there need to be for one of our spine to make the QLD squad. And we have just simply allowed out key half to play at a $300-$400k standard for the last two years.

Just because the bulk of the current young squad have come through the broncos pathways, it doesn’t magically mean they will eventually come good. If I take my broncos glasses off, then I think more and more that our squad is just quite poor. And just because they play in a Broncos jersey isn’t going to magically change that.

P.S I would love to be proven wrong. And this isn’t about players not being great blokes of the field.

It’s all because of mismanagement and backing the wrong horses. Our spine could be Simpkin, Walker and Walsh, instead we lost two of them and didn’t even try for the other really.

yep they definitely made a mistake caring what the fans wanted ...

maybe they should have read Bennett's book where he said "if you start listening to the fans, it won't be long before you're sitting in the stands with them"

Sure, that’s also a possibility. But it’s still betting on very young talent. It doesn’t account for why we are reluctant to buy a world class player at their high point.

Broncos have rarely bought players .. and on the odd occasions when they do, they've rarely worked out ... it's been that way since the early Bronco days.

although I agree, since the NRL don't care about development, we should adapt to the times and make some strategic purchases.

The issue is that there is nothing to get excited about in terms of recruitment. We can rattle off all the names we like but right now all we know is that the Broncos have offered $700,000 to Staggs, $500,000 to Coates and the only NRL player they're looking to sign is Billy Walters. They've already re-signed Piakura on $400,000 after literally doing nothing and Flegler supposedly on $650,000 because they got into a bidding war with the Bulldogs and the Dragons.

I'm sure they'll sign a handful of players but based on everything we know there is nothing to get excited about. Especially when you consider that of all the signings Kev has made the best one has been 33 year old David Mead who is mediocre but at least he looks like an NRL player. Asiata has been a total bust so far, Copley can't last 80 minutes and Levi had one of the worst debuts in club history right alongside James Gavet. Considering it appears that Paix is suspended, I still don't understand why he wasn't just signed on a train and trial deal, absolutely baffling.

I just think it is what it is. Don't expect the Broncos to make any big steps until they start signing for the 2023 season.

No doubt we have had success at this as a club during previous iterations. And If the current development team had a track record of success then I’m all for the in house mantra. It’s just telling that we have had 4 years of a less than acceptable outcome and it appears that heads are still in the sand. Just not much to look forward to as a fan at the moment.

fans whinge when there are leaks
fans whinge when the leaks dry up.

rumours have had us talking to several experienced players that could really help this side

I’m not sure what you are talking about here?

My big fear is that we spend big re-signing these kids the club I scared of
loosing and just hope they come good. It won’t work and it’ll set us back 2-3 years when Kev ultimately gets the sack and the next poor bastard has to try and rebuild the roster again while dealing with Staggs, Coates, Flegler, and Dearden taking up half the cap.

Worst debut in club history? Now I know you're not thinking clearly!!
