Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

I disagree. With a champion half like Reynolds (or SJ) all of a sudden Herbie goes from good to great. Players like Riki get better ball as they run their lines and mature into elite backrowers. All the small things like each player having to do less work as the half's kicking game turns momentum allow them all to play better. Once our spine is sorted many of our players will look every bit as good as what the Storm are producing.

Of course a massive advantage the Storm have is their wrestling technique which allows players to get set in defence. I have said (and will keep saying) we will never match them in this department until such times as we have our own dojo in Brisbane and we seriously work on that aspect of the game.

Another huge advantage is their system is stable and has been for years. Instead of spending time learning basic defensive drills they can move on to the finer aspects of the game. This is true for any club. Once they master the basics they can then progress to other aspects of the game. This only happens at clubs who have stable coaching systems. We've had three coaches in a little over two years. Storm have had Belly there since 2003!!
Reynolds or Johnson improve our team for sure. And you are right about consistency in coaching systems. But Melbourne definitely develop talent better than we do and have done so for a long time. They also manage their cap 1000 times better with the big money going to the spine.

We put our big money into props for some reason and made lots of bad deals with player options (Boyd, Macca, Lodge, Bird, Milford). Melbourne have it all over us in every sense. If I was a young player I would sign with them over the Broncos any day of the week. Also, I know you disagree but Melbourne is an awesome place to live. I grew up in Brisbane and I would not go back. If I did I would go the coasts not Brisbane itself.

We need a 7, 9 an 1. All the best ones are locked up or little chance of leaving their clubs.

I would offload (where possible) Isaako (Maybe could be a gun centre one day if we keep him), Lodge, Milford, Asiata (So disappointing this year) and we have lost Dearden and Coates already. Add these to Bird and Offa and we are half way to fixing our cap.

I would look at relatively cheap options of Dufty and Granville. Dufty you would get for 400K. Granville perfect bench foil for Turpin and would not cost much. Reynolds or Johnson for two years, three if you had to for Reynolds. The issue is the best 7's and 9's are all locked up because other clubs are smarter than us. We then should be keeping some cash or frontload deals so we can sign an elite spine player like Pappy, Munster, Grant, S Walker in next couple of years.

Agree with you there on most of your points. But I have to disagree on "Melbourne have it all over us in every sense." In twenty odd years they've developed (I think) one Victorian to play NRL and he lasted five minutes. So we leave them for dead in that area. Also our supporter base dwarfs theirs. So Melbourne not only don't develop homegrown talent, they are a constant drain on our areas of recruitment. That can't be good for either club in the long run.

Apparently Reynolds is a big fan of our pack, especially Haas.

Halfbacks like playing behind a good pack and apparently ours is more favourable. Add onto that we’re offering the same as the Sharks are offering and offering him the captaincy. If the recruitment team can’t land this then they all need to go.

He can at least see that the guys are putting in for Kevvie, who knows what they'll do under Fitzgibbon, just because a coach comes through the right systems doesn't mean he will be a great coach. Adam O'Brien is case and point on that.

getting rid of a popular coach in Morris could have a similar effect to when we moved Bennett on. i.e. split the playing group so some never really put in under the new coach

I thought our wrestle was great the first half vs cows. Looks like they’ve been working on it. Working together to twist players on to their backs. Huge improvement.
Our wrestle and ruck control has improved in the past couple of matches and our defenders are not always the last off the ground in the ruck again. Whether this is because of the teams we have played or actual improvement will be yet ro be seen until we play the top tier teams.

Despite the wrestle improving we still have holes. In 3 person tackles we are still struggling to wrap up the ball, and too often the third person in the tackle goes in high (essentially cuddling our other 2 defenders who are already up high) instead of going low and wrapping the legs.

we have been ... it was reported a few weeks ago that we got in Brett O'Farrell as our wrestling coach. was in the Storm system until he blew the whistle on their dirty wrestling tactics in 2008

surprisingly, the Storm didn't like that and he has become an outcast down there :rofl

This should hopefully be the first and last time Bennett and Morris are ever used in a comparison as Coaches ever again.

Its not that stage of development that is the problem. It is turning them into into top level players. We haven't had a top level player since Lockyer. We have a stockpile of talent at the lower levels and we got greedy trying to keep them all. We had no strategy of which ones to keep and develop and we lost the best ones except Haas. Melbourne pick less young players back them and develop them to be better I.e Munster, Pappy, Grant, Olam, Hughes, Vunivalu.
I would say Karmichael Hunt was a top level player as was Hodges (He came through our junior system). I would also add Matt Gillett to that list.

In a Transfer Whispers article on Fox Sports.

James Hooper has reported that Reynolds is a fan of our pack, especially Haas.

Hooper with the scoop:

Haas is a very good front rower, the kind that halfbacks like to play off.

While you’re on a roll Hoops, what are the Powerball numbers this week?

I thought for sure that they would transition Morris back to being an assistant coach.

I've always felt he was a stopgap until Flannigan's suspension was up, but he doubled down and got his suspension extended.

The easy option would've been re-hiring Flannigan and moving Morris back to assistant.

If Morris doesnt want to be an assistant then that changes things, but I don't know who tries him out as a head coach moving forward either

I think Souths are right not to offer Reynolds a long term deal. 2 years is the right amount. Johnson is definitely injury prone. Neither option is perfect but paying a guy 800k deep into 30s in last contract year is not the right move for me.
Reynolds is injury prone as well.....
