Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

I seriously reckon the signing would go against everything we stand for.

What are you referring to his flying knees or his off field trouble? Suliasi Vunivalu did score alot of trys in his time with the Storm but alot of them were gimmes from the halves rather then Vunivalu being completely amazing. He can finish though, and Broncos seem to head to the wing for alot of trys so it has its plusses.

Is it possible this whole Covid thing is making players want to return home? Or are there rumours among the game that someone like Bennett is returning? It’s just odd going from having absolutely no prospective signings to half the QLD squad wanting to return to Brisbane within a few weeks. Has me very curious about what’s actually going down

Well, I think Brisbane was always a decent option for QLD players once Seibold was banished and I assume that talks have been underway behind the scenes but had to wait for the Don to officially start before signing off on them.

The team starting to show signs of life despite losses and the signing of a genuine halfback have probably all helped the cause too.

We are going to lose a lot more players this year if we plan on fitting in a fullback, Gagai, Reynolds and a second rower.

I’d say we lose players like Alex Glenn, Richie Kenner, Ben Te’o, Anthony Milford, Keenan Palasia, Dale Copley, John Asiata, David Mead, Danny Levi and possibly Brodie Croft but to fit the new guys in our 17 we would also have to lose one of Lodge or Flegler, possibly Tesi Niu, and Isaako too.

We could legitimately be running out in 2022 with this as our 17!

1 Nicho Hynes
2 Corey Oates
3 Herbie Farnworth
4 Dane Gagai
5 Brenko Lee (not sure how he fits)
6 Kotoni Staggs
7 Adam Reynolds
8 Payne Haas
9 Jake Turpin
10 Matt Lodge
11 Kurt Capewell
12 Tevita Pangai Jr
13 Patrick Carrigan

14 Tyson Gamble
15 Ethan Bullemore
16 Jordan Riki
17 Brendan Piakura

I would love to get Gagai as well but not sure we need Hynes. I would rather go with Farnworth and bring in Hammer in case Herbie doesn't work out. Hammer would be cheaper than Hynes you would imagine with more upside. That said, Hynes is the type of guy you would love to have around the club to set standards.

I’d happily take Hynes on 2 year deal. He’d fill that role well enough and in that time ‘Milford’ could develop into a first grader.

Culturally he should add a fair bit to the squad.

I think Brenko and Gamble are nice cheap failsafes if the Staggs experiment fails, and having a specialist fullback in Hynes and specialist halfback in Reynolds takes a lot of pressure off of our 6.

Brenko fills the centre but gets dropped if Staggs is shifted back, Gamble slots in to the vacant 5/8 roll and neither break the bank playing a cup.

Herbie, Dufty, Hynes and Hammer are all viable options. I just want players to want to be here.

Yep all good points. I do wonder where 'Milford' fits into all of this. I suspect he might end up a centre.

Hynes can also play in the halves apparently but I haven't seen him play much there at the storm.

Probably start as a winger as usually is the case with tall fast guys.

Isaako is the real question mark. Kev said we’d go to market to replace Coates - and I don’t imagine that he meant Brenko.

If the rumours of Hynes and Dufty are true, and Brenko plays centre, where does that leave Isaako?

Part of me really wants Isaako to succeed. If he lifted the floor of his game to an acceptable level, and kept his highlights, that’s a hell of a player. Unfortunately these rocks and diamonds types rarely break out of that mindset. Inu, Sandow, Mateo, etc.

I think he's basically Drinkwater 2.0 in terms of how he plays fullback and five eight, but Drinkwater is slightly better

I know I have less credibility than Badel, but I’ve heard a couple of “rumours” one being Lodge to Penrith next week to free up cap space for Gagai..... make what you will of that and the other “rumours” include:

The inside word is Sua is locked in. Milford to the titans. Billy Walters is 4 weeks away from coming to the broncs. They won’t get capewell. Panthers won’t let him go apparently.
Dogshit on most of it.

Penrith dont have the cap room for lodge. If they had the cap room, Capewell would be signed at 350-400. They also have an abundance of young props coming through. Capewell is actively in the market at the moment too.

Yeah so true. Physically he is unreal, all the talent in the world and that stepping he can do is up there with the best I've ever seen. Unfortunately, he has implosion moments in him at critical times every game.

If the plan is Herbie to fullback then the long term left center spot opens up, which works for him as he has a left arm carry.

I'd be worried about a spine of Herbie, Staggs and Reynolds though... just dont think there's enough strike in Herbie and Staggs in the spine compared to what they can do in their current centre roles.

I think we need to keep focussing on fullback, five eight and second row.

Isaako can easily move back to wing as a Coates replacement and Brenko is fine as a depth center to allow Staggs to stay in the centers.

Of course 'Milford' could be the long term fullback option in a few years which means Isaako as an interim fullback for the next few years could be viable... or Hynes for a couple years before dropping into five eight, so potentially Hynes becomes the next priority as a 6 or 1 followed by a second rower, which I think we definitely need until Piakura is ready to go

Would be nice to get Croft off the books as his wage basically paves way for Hynes to come in.

Of course Croft could do with training along side Reynolds for a couple years as well. Croft's biggest let down as a halfback is the lack of a kicking game, but Reynolds is a little halfback so he should be able to learn some things off him to improve his kicking game. I think Croft is like 23 as well so still has many years left in his game.

Apparently Hynes is going to play 5/8 this weekend.

Might answer a few of our questions about him as a potential option in the halves. I'm quietly optimistic but also shit scared he'll end up being another player that just looked amazing in the Storm system.

Either way he's doing a fantastic job of putting his name front and centre in the market. His agent must have a pretty easy gig right now.

Imagine we sign Milford for 250k (which is all I think he's worth frankly), we'd essentially have taken Milford's wage and squeezed Reynold's in for free. It's absolutely crazy how far off MIlford has fallen, he's went from one of the hottest signings in the NRL to fighting for his NRL life.

I don't even think Anthony Milford on a vastly reduce wage is in the hierarchy's thinking. I would more likely think the view is he hasn't performed and doesn't deserve a contract extension and will be shown the door. There has too much money paid and too many chances given to be thinking of giving Milford any leeway.

The view we could possibly use him here or there is neither productive nor beneficial for both parties involved. I also think Milford will get another contract in the NRL. The view he is fighting for his NRL life may be a little exaggerated but if he fails at another club then that would put him territory where he may be forced to look at other options in English Superleague. That has happened to Nathan Peats.

I agree with all of this. The one thing I'd add is...
Kev is rebuilding our culture, Milf has openly stated he's a lazy trainer. He even tried to justify it by saying "many lazy trainers in the past have still been great players" witch Justin Hodges proves true. Hodgo though was always +100% on the field where as Milf is still a lazy prick.
As crazy as it sounds, even at 250k Milf just has to be shown the door.
We need to start afresh with our new marquee 7
Milf would just be a ball & chain holding on to the worst years of our clubs history.

As respectfully as possible to your opinion its doing shit like moving players who are 20 years old or have never played fullback in senior footy to fullback that will keep us at the bottom. Hynes is one of the better ball playing fullbacks that did well for himself in q-cup that's where his form originated from not the random games or stint off the bench he has played for the storm every few games over the past few seasons. He has bided his time in q-cup and we have the forward pack and spine for him to fit in nicely. We can't be scared of prying cheap players out of the Storm just in case they aren't good. Brodie is an anomaly because he didn't accomplish anything. He was playing with Smith, Munster and Slater... by no means is the Storm bad now but Hynes has bigger shoes to fill and a bigger role to play with less support around him. I think he would be a class signing... One of the few things I have ever agreed with Kenty about is broncos need to sign Nicho Hynes
