You'll be able to tell that our team has improved on last year when Billy Walters is no longer good enough to make the bench. But for that to happen we need to recruit or promote both a hooker and a utility, and his father has to demote him to depth. If you're still clinging to the wishful fantasy that Billy was hired as depth, you're not on the same page as Kevvie. Billy has been first man picked all season.

we can go on arguing about who was the better option between turpin /Paix or Walters , but it doesn't really matter because the season is done.
i believe if options arise then we won't see Billy in the team , either way nor you or i have definitive information on the situation so we're both pissing in the wind.
i just choose to go the positive route and think it's for the greater good of the team.

I always thought Madden looked reasonably decent. Havent seen him a great deal though so i could well be wrong.

Prior to this season i didnt think much of him either. He did a solid job against us. Have to say this year when he has played has been solid.

He's not done a great deal wrong, but i think you need more than that in a spine position.

Simpkin may be an option if he agitated for a release. He is currently behind api and would be competing with liddle, Brown and Ngatikaura as the back-up. Madden has played a fair whack of nsw cup with him and could have a word.

I know simpkin and paix are pretty young and we have mozer coming through but mozer is still a couple years away and by the time he is ready for regular first grade we could decide what back-up hooker to keep.

My only concern would be that all our hooking options would be young, but if ballin is still amongst the staff, he could help mentor them.

I've never been Billy's biggest fan. Always saw him as a 6 but not in the NRL, but he's been decent this year but not great. I always thought if he cracked the NRL, it would be in that 14 role. Thats about the only spot i can see for him

My criticism of Billy is really more a criticism of the treatment of Paix this season and our seeming lack of urgency in finding a decent 9. I think Billy and Paix was our best rotation this season but once Paix started getting dropped for Turpin it’s hard not to start thinking about favouritism.

Paix was meant to be the guy we were hanging our hooker responsibilities on at least until Mozer is ready. Yet despite trying to force Turpin out early mid season we (Kev) thought he was a better option than Paix. The only logic the would be that we valued Turpin’s defence over Paix’s because it definitely wasn’t his attack that got him a spot. The issue is, Billy missed the most tackles in our team which is impressive given just how many tackles we missed this season. So why was Paix the causality here? Because he had one poor game? Billy and Turpin had those too.

Outside of injury - there is just no reasonable argument to leave Paix out of the side. So it should have been either Turpin or Walters + Paix.

I’ve got plenty of criticism of Kev’s coaching but I think the worst is his toxic management of spine players. He has absolutely burn and churned them over the last 2 seasons and they all eventually end up with severe confidence issues.

2 points that I keep having to repeat are

1. Paix was the best hooker in our team this season except for 1 game, so I don’t agree with you there.
2. Why are we even in a position where Walters is the top of our hooker rotation. Before you say “who else was available” I named 10 hooker player movements for 2023 a few days ago. .

Paix is a work in progress plus injuries and form hurt him , will be interesting to see how it plays out
I'm not going to crucifie Kevvie for choosing Turpin over Paix at the end , and I'm a big Paix fan and have never rated Turpin.

You assume I didn`t know who he was ?
I took note when people said Madden is in the team to play the Broncos that will make it easier .

Then concentrated on him during that match which his team won . And yes that day he was better than Reynolds .

And I watched the replay . So I didn`t just come to know him yesterday .

So if he continues to improve and Reynolds stays the same or regresses , then yes he can/ will surpass Reynolds . .

maybe Kevvie hasn’t done it the right way but we've needed to figure out what we're working with , it's a brutal reality in trying to shape a team .
mentally we've been weak and if players can't handle it then maybe they should try doing something else, it was never going to be easy .

Madden had a good year last season in NSW Cup for the Magpies, he's interesting floated around Newcastle and Tigers now and hasn't really cracked it yet.

He was NSW U18 half against Dearden in 2018 at the MCG and NSW came away with the win.

I thought that 21 would be the year Simpkins and Madden became the Tigers spine but it hasn't happened.

The interesting aspect for Brisbane and the Tigers is why has Madden floated along for a while. If he comes here and kicks on it reflects badly on Tigers.

He's not done a great deal wrong, but i think you need more than that in a spine position.

He looked to have good confidence lower grades, but NRL grind is different beast. I don't think he would have signed if it was purely a backup rather than succession planning.

Just wish we would get a hooker.

He was also unfit and injured too often meaning he was unable to build his minutes up. He should have been named after killing it in Q Cup for our last round game, but not named over Walters.

Look, I don’t think we should have signed Walters either but I understand why we did. Our cap was shot, we needed somebody. I haven’t seen your list but I guarantee it was unrealistic considering what was available for what price.
