Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Walker was obviously on the club but what about this situation makes you think this is on the club given what we actually know out of this? And one of things I believe we know is that the Broncos showed the NRL chicken sandwich's contract and they were ok with it, unless I'm not remembering that correctly, so Kyle is not the most reliable source here for truth.

I think there has to be an element of truth to his claim. Nobody is going to throw the hissy fit he did and lie about it to that extent. I dont believe for a second it was to the level Karl is making out though, but i do think part of it is probably true.

The more i look at this now, and with Adamsons relationship with Gus, i think the doggies was always going to be the move he made.

Confident the 5/8 thing was just an angle to try and get out of his current contract. This was always about his manager getting money. Not sure how it all works but surely we could have re-contracted him for a different amount and his manager would have gotten his cut? Once he stated he would "Never play for the Broncos" though, it was all over. That said, given Gould's connection to Adamson maybe there was only one way it was all going to end.
Gould was the one behind headhunting Walsh for the Warriors. He would've cut right through the agent's bullshit, appraised the kid's talent and put a solution to the Broncos. For all we know he might've suggested the 500k as a face saver. That number came from nowhere and then suddenly Gould appeared. It's a plausible theory.

He can spray a load of bollocks into a microphone, but in moments like these I tend to see Gould as the grownup in the room.

I would say if you have the best young half on the books and he goes to this extent to leave - you have failed somewhere.

If Kev really didn’t meet him that’s unforgivable. I’m sure some posters will push back on that comment but I’m sorry, if you have a player of that potential you build a relationship with them as soon as possible. You hear he gets a new manager, you contact the manager with the knowledge that he will want his slice, especially after the Haas situation, and you say “I know youve just come on. Let’s work something out as a sign of goodwill and get you a small commission with the aim of a big deal in a few years”.

Get the kid a fuckin chicken sambo
He isn’t the best young half that’s the reality. Isaiya Katoa is the best half out of school by a donkey’s dick followed by Jye Gray who accomplished far more than Karl at 1/3rd of the size. Karl is nowhere near as special as he is insinuated to be considering everywhere he has gotten has been off the back of being to big and to strong with silky skill for schoolboy defences taht shit isn’t even transferable to cup let alone NRL. You can hold it to me if you like we will not live to regret how he turned out. He has bust written all over him. Aus schoolboy does not make being an nrl star an inevitability in actuality 90% of them end up being at an average/reliable nrl level. Not worth the struggles, not worth the strenuous cap strain and not worth his poor temperament. He will be another young player that will leave that isn’t worth worrying about in a couple years time.

You forgot to mention he's a Kiwi.

Where does this end though?

The manager knows he’s got you by the short and curlies and the player then ends up with an inflated ego like Hayne, except he hasn’t even played a game of ISC.

I am not saying it’s a bad idea to cultivate relationships, but we don’t need to pander to every pimple-faced brat that comes along with potential.

I’m not very good at picking up on innuendo, can you please just tell me how you really feel

Pretty sure it does. But they can spread it over 4 years (so $125k per year on top of his salary).

Apparently it doesn’t offset our cap though. Which is dumb and inconsistent. But… it is the NRL.
Thanks for the info :)

Yea, it really is just dumb. Besides getting rid of a problem child .. I just can't see the positives here for us.

Pretty ridiculous and made up; Karl was tremendous playing for Queensland last year and at lock too- he outplayed Katoa when they played NSW and even though Gray was Queensland captain, he didn't make the Australian side and Karl leaped over him to be Australian co-captain.

I think Gray was hard done by not to make the Australian team but you couldn't argue with the team they picked.

Even in the MM semifinal the last time they played against each other Gray and Mozer had to construct the greatest set-in schoolboy football to get the Magpies home by two in the last 30 seconds.

Now they've both left the Broncos, would they have let Gray go if they knew Karl was going? That's the bigger question- now don't have either.

Probably would have kept him. Ah well, Mam is the one anyway.

No doesn't go on the cap. Just the value of the new contract if he's in their top 30.
It’s a crazy rule when you think about it. The cap was designed to (1) evenly distribute talent and (2) protect clubs from over-spending and going broke. But, allowing transfer fees outside the cap seems to contradict both of those aims. Competitive advantage to rich clubs.

Yeah no other way to frame it, the club got fucked by a 17 year old and a no name agent.

The young talent exodus was meant to stop under Donaghy and Ikin but if anything it has only increased - at least in regards to requests.

Surely it just shows the clubs with money, like the broncos, should offer the poor club huge money outside the cap for their best players. Give the tigers a million dollars for Api and Isiah

All bets were off when the NRL decided they needed a Brisbane II.

They'll have to adapt, but that's tough to do when clubs are flouting the rules so blatantly.
