Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Seems to be our style, bringing in a young up and coming player too early.
Problem is we have to because we’re not in a developed winning culture or away from the media spotlight. Clubs like the Roosters & Storm can guide their players and develop them adequately without big media attention.
Just look what happened at the Broncos when they tried to develop Walsh. A little sniff of media attention and then off to the Warriors on big $.

Someone said they heard Tom Starling is on his way here. I think it’s Ben Marschke personally but interesting as it is a pretty random player to comment for us to sign.
Starling is signed at the raiders for 2023 and has a player option in 2024.

Would love starling but I doubt it's even remotely a chance given he just signed a 2 year extension at the start of this year.

Although, the fact zac Woodford has jumped him to the promised 9 jersey now, and the raiders will need to find a lot of money to keep tapine might work in our favour.

He is exactly the type of 9 we need. High energy running game with crisp passing. Would free up Reynolds big time, and together with Walsh it would make our attack electric when it's on. He's a good defender too but I won't get excited for the season until I see our defence fucking improve.... also wouldnt mind if we stop walking under ladders, and the nrl finally get some consistency with the judiciary and 6 agains are scrapped with accountability for wrong decisions to boot (Annersly coming onto their poor excuse for digital media broadcast claiming the refs were right and making up some bs rule to justify it is not showing accountability btw)...

says it on Queenslander. at approximately 15:20 Locky is asked about the spine make up for next year (16:20 he hints at the new signing)

when he started talking about bringing in another hooker and then immediately spoke about competition for the 6 due to Mam’s inexperience, I shuttered at the thought of Mam getting stuck behind Billy.

Starling is a gun. Won't believe it till I see it, but I hope the rumour is true.

Holy shit if we got Starling I would do cartwheels. I really hope there is something to this rumour and maybe the Raiders view that new kid as the future.

Why do people keep calling for anyone who isn't a hooker to play hooker? It's a specialized position these days and not everyone will succeed at it like Hunt has. Staggs, Mam, Reynolds and Niu are not hookers and their abilities won't transfer to that position. We need an actual hooker.

They're only focusing on what a player can do in attack, Benny Hunt for example.

You ask him to make 40 tackles in the middle of the field every week in the NRL, probably not going to work out too well. It works in Origin with someone like Harry Grant coming into the game off the bench but at NRL level.. if you are paying a guy up around 1 million dollars, you want 80 minutes every week.

Brandon Smith is another one, great runner of the footy, haven't seen him offer any sort of creativity out of dummy half other than barging someone out of the way. You could get that just by having him in your backrow somewhere, I don't think he's a hooker at all.

The fact that the comment around a new hooker was said in the context of there being some 'competition' for the hooker spot tells me that whoever it is won't be a clear-cut starting 9 and will probably be another player around the calibre of Paix, Walters etc... That's also the most likely outcome given the lack of compelling 9 options available.

I was thinking that if we lose hass, we are likely to need another middle with nrl experience and preferably a player that is an aggressive/enforcer type.

I dont necessarily like him but when he has his head screwed on, nathan brown (the player) can be decent and a potential gettable option. He steams on to the ball, generates momentum in the ruck and doesn't take a backwards step. He has fallen out at parra and given permission to leave. I am not sure if he is connected to anyone yet. If you could pick him up on a subsidised deal he could be a handy reserve/depth option.

I'd put it this way:

Starling - Unlikely, would be wonderful if true
Marshke - Almost 90% sure it will be him and he is basically just another Turpin but isn't Turpin so I guess that is better than Turpin
Levi - No connection but just wanted to put in here that he has done his knee most likely and will likely be out most of next year

I don’t rate starling as high as others, he’s a poor man’s Cook and only a level above Levi imo. However he’s about a million miles ahead of Turpin and Walters so I wouldn’t be unhappy with the signing.

Am I the only one who took from that, that there will be a push this off season for Blake to be the 9, Similar to that of Ezra this pre-season. Blake obviously won’t be getting the long term development plan.

Mozer has just been operated on two weeks ago and how much of pre-season he can do is still unknown. They’re not relying on him at all.

Surprised talk of Mam taking a back seat for next year, I get he is Very young and is probably a year or two ahead of schedule getting into the Starting side, but he looks destined for greatness, looked as Good as Sam Walker did last season imo.

It requires a pretty special talent to look good at that age with that little experience in the Halves, because outside those two the only name that jumps out is Cleary at least in recent times.

If it’s another player with same caliber as Paix & Billy, then we’re f***** next season as well. We’re stuffed with make shit 9’s & we absolutely DO NOT need more of’em. We need genuine 9’s. There should be someone out there in Q-cup.

Yea unless Hunt, Munster, DCE, or Walker are coming next year, I’m not sure who he’s even behind.

Madden? Walters? Kelly?
