Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

On 100% footy, Gus said Tino story is BS.

Even Slothfield isn't going to make up quotes from someone.

The NRL have also commented on this although not sure if that was because if the story or the reported conversation Laundy had with the NRL.

There is definitely some smoke. Gus is now trying to cover the Bulldogs IMO.

Probably just a half assed effort to get Tino to the dogs. More so to show Payne that hey, if we are going to offer 1mill to Tino, we will offer you more $$

Personally I'm hoping that the Bulldogs get Tino, and therefore don't have space to chase Hass...
Tino is available for 2024. Payne not until a year later. The Titans have made Tino captain. He's not going anywhere, but maybe his manager will try to get his contract upgraded. Fifita had his chance to leave a few months ago.

The difference with this and the Ben Hunt story is Hunt says he wants out, the Broncos admitted trying to poach him (cue outrage) and he asked to leave.

I thought they were free immediately due to contract clauses regarding sacking Holbrook

Tut tut tut.

The Broncos heard that he was asking for a release, and enquired whether it was a possibility.

Yes, and Tino's agent confirmed that, but that's the extent of the story. Fifita only recently signed his contract so he must be reasonably happy with that. Tino is the face of the club. Why would he be unhappy? Just because you can leave doesn't mean you will.

Looks like due diligence on his agent's behalf. I don't have a problem with any of this, but I hope he stays without breaking the bank.

Payne is due to earn $848,000 next season, but his agent agent Ahmad Merhi knows he can command 7 figures on the open market:

“We’re pretty clear that we are going to wait until November 1. We’re four months away from November 1 and it would ...be a smart decision to wait until November 1 seeing Payne is the player he is and there is a possibility he may get the Dally M award this year. We have discussed it and we are going to wait until November 1."
"His preference is to stay in Brisbane."
"He also understands that there are other opportunities so he wants to look at those opportunities when they present themselves and then go from there – weigh up the pros and cons and go from there.”
“We hear the rumours as well about Australian rugby and the Bulldogs. I can tell you it is all just hearsay. We do our usual rounds of sending a list to all the clubs in the NRL and in the UK saying these are the players coming off in 2024 and they are up for negotiation on November 1. They all respond with the same response – keen to talk about Payne."
"I think Payne’s concerns last year with Brisbane were about being in a competitive team."
“I know he wants to tick boxes and I am allowing those boxes to be ticked. He is ticking boxes at the moment – they are winning, he is in a competitive side. I know why he wants to play for Kevvie – Kevvie is a gentleman. Commercially he will wait until November 1. Ultimately it is his decision – he has to weigh up the pros and cons.”

Not really surprised, just a manager being a manager and doing his job. Don't have to like it but I think its just part of the game now, especially the timing of it.

We'll probably throw him some of the Herbie/Fleg/Palasia money to get him to stay.

I still think he'll stay, his family connection here is too strong IMO. Just give him the mill he deserves (performance wise) and get it sorted.

I think the real question is - how much is too much for Payne? I think as you start getting towards the 1.2-1.3 mark, unless that's at the back end of a 5 year deal, probably getting a bit out of hand at that point?

Look that’s a great answer to the reasoning why. Far more reasonable than the shmozzle of last year.

I can some what understand it and it’s his right but I think we need to put a month deadline on it say December for him to make his decision or we pull the offer and go after the players on market.

I want to see how he performs in a finals game before throwing crazy money at him, origin is a comparison to finals footy and haas doesn’t lift, unlike carrigan who finds that extra gear.

Objectively speaking, if I’m Haas’ agent then I think the smart thing to do is definitely to wait until November 1.

Realistically, he’s on great money if he stays with the offer as it is, but the answer to EXACTLY how much more he could command from both the Broncos with an increased offer, or from other clubs, is still far from certain, and the smart thing to do on their part is to find out for sure.

It’s all well and good to say he easily commands 7 figures, and realistically it’s probably true, but there is a big differences between packing up your family and moving to the Bulldogs for an extra $100k-$200k a season on exactly 7 figures, as opposed to someone coming in and offering $1.3 million a season or even something left field like Rugby Union coming in at $1.5 million a season or something crazy like that. That’s an extra investment property every single year. It’s enough to change his life, his family’s lives, and the lives of probably his unborn grandkids if it’s used wisely.

Personally, I doubt there is that kind of money coming for him. I suspect a Sydney club or two would bite in the $1 million range, but beyond that it’s a boatload of cash for a Prop Forward and even with a relatively sure thing like Taumalolo it’s arguably been a poor investment in practice.

If he used that sort of offer to ultimately stay but get another $50k-$100k out of Brisbane then his agent has done a great job and thoroughly earned his pay cheque which is precisely what he’s supposed to be doing.
