Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

sorry but what?

He didn't even get the upgrade until 2021 from memory, he was at around 650k till then, and for 2019 onwards was a NSW/Kangaroos middle, that's very good value.

Keep in mind Tino is on 1 mil this season 1.1 for next season and he also had that terrible clause in linked to the coach, it's easy to forget that because Titans don't have the magnifying glass on them like us.

He signed a 3 year contract in 2016 for 3 years. 2017, did nothing in first grade. 2018, played 3 games or so before he got injured, 2019, Was solid with the odd big game. 2020 and 21, he started to show a bit more and played more consistent footy. You could argue 2021 he was probably just starting to exceed his value. As i said after that, he was probably worth more than he was getting paid. I'm not far off at with what i said.

Payne got his big upgrade in 2018 after playing 3 games before he had even played for Australia. Pretty good money still for an unproven 18 year old.

3 mil for 6 years is 500k average, but I know it was loaded more for the later years.

Like I said we got complete value 2019 onwards.

We did pay for potential in 2018 but literally the year after he was already worth more then the potential we placed on him.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Tino being pushed aside for Haas story that was used during origin a few years ago.

It would be a great time win for Tino to reach out to the broncos and undercut Haas’ offer

he would have to take less money then he is on now for it though, judging by the money he is on atm and for future, he is probably not looking purely for money if he wants to go to market.

I don't have a problem with Payne testing the market.

I have an issue with the timing & the complete BS from his camp.

and I 100000% guarantee that if he said nothing and strung us along until November you would be whinging about it...

how can I guarantee that ... because you already have been.

Yeah Tino isn’t going to get much more money than he is already on, and he’s a captain. The move is either a play to try and squeeze more out of the titans but realistically it seems he wants out for reasons outside of money.

I could actually see him going back to Melbourne

Since Melbourne lost Jesse Bromwich they would have money because he was on a mill a season(before the cap upgrade as well keep in mind), and outside Nelson getting an upgrade they surely have money to blow, since they lost Brandon Smith as well, which still leaves money after the Grant and Munster upgrade.

You are just saying what i have said basically, but not including that i think the last 2 seasons he has probably been paid under his value. I just dont think for 2019 he was at his value. At the time, he hadnt earned what he was being payed. $500k for a player who had done nothing in first grade is a terrific contract for the player. By the end of 2019, after a solid year, he was worth it. He wasnt at the start. And dont forget, i'm pretty sure he got another upgrade as well in that time. Its easy to look back in hindsight and say he was worth X amount because he did this in a particular year.

I've always been pretty consistent with what i think about player contracts. At one time we dished them out to players before they achieved anything and look at the amount of times we got burned. Payne is just one we got a good deal out of.

2019 he was Dally M prop of the year and played the rep games as well as our clear best player, I don't think there is an argument for 2019 being overs.

Lodge was on 200k more than him that year from memory.

Seriously, he could have told the Broncos before this.

Of course there is. For a start the Dally M's are a flawed way of rating players. No point arguing with you about it because you are looking at it with hindsight. I'm looking at it with cold hard facts. He was a $500k player at the start of 2019. He hadnt done a thing to earn the right to be a $500k a year player. I dont see how thats even an argument. Its factual, he hadnt. I probably went over the top saying he was way over his market value for 2019, but i still dont think at the time he had proved, after one year, he was a $500k a year player even taking into consideration it was around the time we had started getting those stupid contracts like a million for Ash Taylor and $750k for Lodge. Nobody is saying he was rubbish, but you need more than one good year to earn that right. He did that after 2019 and hasnt looked back. This is my whole point, you have to earn the right to get big contracts and we dished them out too easily for players who just had a run of form instead of a consistent few years of form.

Its all irrelevant anyway. The Payne situation isnt really about what he did or didnt earn in the past, its how he handles things now. And thats pretty poor imo. Same as Tino.

Well yeah I agree paying overs for potential is a fools game if you want a top squad, but we got value and yes in hindsight, we did go stupid with it initially but the reality is we got lucky with him as he earned every sent of the gamble we placed on his potential over the course of the contract given, you can't deny that.

because of that he almost certainly lost money he could have got by signing it and that's probably how he thinks about it, despite the risk we had doing it at the time we did it.

there isn't much upside to doing something like this and is a symptom of why we turned to shit later on with how crappy our contracts were with other players at the time.

to add on that, I do wonder how the Haas situation would have gone if we just gave him a shorter contract to begin with, outside the risk of us losing him, if he stayed he would have been on more money but probably less disgruntled about it.

Nolans contracts back then were some seriously poor shit.

He got lucky as well tbf. He's got cars from the club and a salary others at his age who hadnt done anything in first grade never got anywhere near getting. Its why i feel despite him getting unders the last 2 years its levelled itself out with him.

The more i think about it, i was all in on Tino but i've gone off the idea now. If Payne leaves, i'd actually still raid superleague. Their forwards who play regularly generally are workhorses who step up over here and i think we could replace Payne with both Matty Lees from St Helens and Mikolaj Oledzki from Leeds. I think both are a step above the likes of Jensen and Lees especially i feel is better than Flegler and we would probably get them both for not a lot more than Payne is going to get. It would probably make our pack a more rounded option than relying so much on Carrigan and Haas.

For me Mo is the value, he has gone under the radar(atleast compared to Tino and Haas) and would have a lower value than Tino despite basically being identical in the numbers that matter, but that would be the potential Haas replacement not something we can go for if we do end up keeping him.

I wonder how much Mo is going to cost. If he is on about $750k now ( which i believe he is ) You would think $800k minimum. He would be a good option, really rate him.

I reckon we could get Lees and Oledzki for about 1.3/1.4 a year million for the pair. I think that would be excellent value but not sure we could afford that after we upgrade a few.

I think 100k less than whatever Titans would offer his new cap contract at.

My guess is about 850-900k which is like 650-700k in old money.
