Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2024

Hetherington has been a bitter disappointment this year. Next to no impact, even mid game off the bench, errors galore and no aggression despite showing signs of it last season. Guy needs a rocket or marching orders, he can pick.

He hasn't regressed, he's maintained the same level and standard since 2019.

OK ...
Did you ever watch Sesame Street as a kid ?
I remember they used to have a segment called one of these things is not like the other . Kinda trained liitle kids to see paterns and understand differences .
Utilising those skills I learned all those years ago I respectfully disagree with your opinion .

last year he was beating the 1st tackle and hitting the clear regularly . This season he isn`t .

What were the things observed about him in 2019?

Strengths- running game, footwork, sometimes an offload and front on defence- see Tweed v Illawarra game or Mal Meninga final.

Weakness- Injuries and defensive choices.- Schoolboys v NZ poor coming across to close the gap in Iro try.. inconsistency from week to week and within games. Through his 29 Cup games you’d think he’d nailed something for it to completely disappear the next week.

Missed 10 tackles in the 22 Grand Final.too.

Is any of that anything people aren’t saying in 2024?

Safe to say Piakura just hasn’t developed like he needs to. Hopefully we haven’t given him too big of a contract. His ability to pick up an injury doesn’t help. Good with the ball but useless without it. We need to find some hard working defensive back row options

My biggest concern with Paikura is how injury prone he is and our inability to cover the position when it inevitably happens.

We need atleast a backrow option that can put pressure on his position rather than just a backup imo.

His defence isn't the best but He has shown with some consistent run of games he can work well with the spine, especially with Walsh, but when he is injured for several stints during the year for many years now(before first grade) it shows a pattern that his body is probably just not made for the game.

But it is early days in his career and some players get beyond it, while many others suffer with it their whole career.

For argument's sake let's say that's true. It's hardly an endorsement of our coaching staff if the kid hasn't improved in 5 years.

What the **** are they all doing?

Yeah that's a good question I don't know. I questioned the year off straight out of school that cohort had in 2020 but Sam Walker and Walsh are fine.

Howarth had a year off too and has Bellamy, but he's trended a similar path of up and down. But I think Howarth is starting to show an somewhat upward movement slowly.

Piakura has now trained fulltime since 21 and played 29 Cup games and 30 NRL games so you should see some improvement in these elements of his game but there just isn't yet.

It's been Piakura's whole career not just this year, I have lost count of the number of games I have commented- fixed that now, for him to miss 10 tackles the next week.

Even the Knights game is just classic Piakura, nice hole running try, misses a simple tackle five minutes later and you're back to wondering how and why.

Is it that he's another "athlete but not a footballer"...? Like so many others we seem to bring through?

Wouldn’t hurt to be able to learn his trade from an experienced second rower as he develops into a full time first grader. Lucky he’s got a wealth of knowledge to gain from guys like Jordan Riki and Hunt.

SOS Brad Thorn.

Or Gorden Tallis if he wants Kevvie to keep his job.

Lets not forget that Piakura was a PEAK covid developed player coming through. Pretty much didnt the game for at least 12 months, it would have affected different players in different ways. I honestly believe he will get there and be a force to be reckoned with in the BR. It is such a specialist position these days with what teams throw at them. I would like to see what happens if he defends next to some better defensive players. Mam is also a liability and the two of them are often clueless, Piakura cops the blame but I think we should reserve some judgement for a less injury prone year for the whole team and also let him get to 50 games and reassess.

Mate , I am not some Rugba league savant like yourself .
I rarely watch Q Cup . And after reading your reports about what`s , what in the lower grades frankly I don`t give it much weight .
I do know what I see with my own eyes . And that`s what I am talkin about here .
Piakura 2023 greater than > Piakura 2024 .

He had a cpl of years under Capewell ?
Slow learner ?

I've never seen Piakura as overly athlete, he does things a footballer does- he understands running lines and his front on defence is textbook.

He does real footballer things, just not consistently or with minimal error.

What exactly has Brad Thorn done as a Rugba League coach in the past that makes you think he would be a success .

I don`t remember him being with any premier ship winners as an assistant coasch ? I do remember the Reds performing poorly for a cpl of seasons while he was there . And like the man folks want him to replace had long losing streaks .

All this talk of hard arses who will whip these "athletes" into hard headed footballers . I think that lacks insight into the phsyche of millenium kids .
These kids grew up in the era of the participation medal . Too much punishment and not enough rewards and you could have a mutiny or a fractured squad lickety split .
