Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2026

I wouldnt be a fan of him taking this appointment. He could genuinely build something special here, last thing we need is him getting distracted.
Surely Madge can see that as well... broncos is basically a dream job for him.

We're a massive club with top tier off field support and a conveyor belt of talent coming through the juniors... you're not getting that at many clubs across the NRL... surely he doesn't want to risk that by coaching England from the other side of the world.

I think he only coached NZ out of necessity... he needed a job to keep himself in the shop window for another NRL gig, but the NRL is where he wants to be.

It sounds more like Sydney media throwing names out there that their audience knows for clicks... England will need a local coach just to be able to watch ESL games and be close to that competition

Willie Peters could be an inspired choice for them tbh if they just want a coach for the World cup.

True although I think he wants an NRL gig as well... so coaching England could hinder that... especially if he can't get them firing and looking competitive

I would imagine Payne's plan with R360 was very short term to make the cash and then come back to NRL.

The R360 tournaments are pretty short (the first couple anyway) and they don't have a centralised location, so he could just FIFO to the locations to play.

His issue now is the threat of 10yr bans... they sound like they can be overturned in court, but does Payne want to be the one that pays the lawyers to go to court.
think he will need to live more than 6 months of the year outside Australia also to get the tax breaks they are spruiking

The fine print for those 10 year bans was that the NRL could decide to waive them in certain circumstances ... If Payne wanted to come back to the NRL there is zero chance the NRL stops him

Yeah I get that, but Payne would still be the one putting himself at risk.

This is correct

Games with Reece this year: 16-5 (76%), 30.1 ppg for, 19.9ppg against
Games without Reece: 2-4 (33%), 19.7 ppg for, 21.9 ppg against.
- Swing of +16.2 points per game when we have Reece

Games with Haas: 15-9 (62.5%), 26.8 ppg for, 21.9 ppg against
Games without Haas: 3-0 (100%), 36 ppg for, 15.3 ppg against
- Swing of -15.8 points per game when we have Haas

Haas is hugely important and easily the best middle in the game, but if I had to choose between the two then it's Reece.
Now do Reyno.

Now do Reyno.
Stats for our big 5 since Walsh joined in 2023... Reyno has the second highest win percentage to Walsh and the second lowest win percentage when we're without him

It’s the secondary sport in a lot of major markets…

They’ve got way more money and scope for growth than rugby league does
I agree that it’s present in more markets, I just don’t think that it will work as glitzy, sexy product. Scrums, rucks and mauls are dull to the uninitiated.

Meh, I've been resigned to losing Haas since the reported $3m figure first popped up.

If the whole thing crashes out, he'll end up playing rugby somewhere like France.

I don't care about Tino either, if we have the salary cap space then go all in on Willison instead. He's got more potential at prop than Tino does.

Maybe Hass and his manager have had an honesty session and they think union will pay more in the short term and potentially extend his career. He was fairly banged up at times this year and there is potential that his body is breaking down at a young age and he may not be able to generate the same impact in a few years.

If that is the case his earning potential in league will not cut it especially if he doesn't have a ten year deal to fall back on. I doubt the club would be offering one any more after his ankles and now his lower back.

Reports this morning Madge may be offered the England coaching job for World Cup next year.

I've actually just read the article and it is typical "journalist" maths ... adding 2+2 and coming up with 22

so here is the equation that they came up with to link madge with the England job.

England lost the Ashes in a whitewash despite the Aussies not playing their best footy

plus

Madge has headed over to England with the club's Football Manager, Troy Thompson. Madge is heading over on a personal-development tour. he'll attend a sports performance conference and talk to some of the worlds top coaches ... Thompson will also be on a reconnaissance mission as he plans the WCC trip in Feb

the mathematician is Dean Ritchie

I'm not convinced we'll lose Haas. yeah money-wise Rugby League can't compete ... but to get the tax breaks, he would need to live outside of Australia (and probably not in the best countries), and given his family situation that may be a deal breakers, especially as ne can still earn very good money in Australia.

but for this purpose, let's assume Haas takes the R360 offer ...

I'd be using that $1.3 million to ensure we don't lose Willison and to strengthen our backrow

People forget hunt was 4 years younger than slater and he was keeping slater out of the fb spot for aus and qld until the final year, where it was still a toss of the coin scenario, and hunt was still in the teams.

What a waste. **** the afl for that gimmick. Why is it 99% of the time broncos players that union and afl want. I get we are the most popular team but ffs, how many converts did they get in western sydney for folau? Lol i'll tell you ZERO. Having lived down there at the time, it was terrible marketing for them, every time afl was brought up it was "ex nrl player..." but no one could (and still cant) name a single giants player.

They took Queenslanders because it destabilized Origin. No point taking New South Wales they have five fullbacks. Queensland has two. They went through that period of taking Queensland outside backs.

In a way League is now hitting them where they hurt, lots of players come from GPS schools and that would never have happened before. That used to be Rugby's holy ground.

They're even swapping schools which is a first, Roosters signed Lote-Felo and he switches from Southport to Scotts. They're even taking from each other now.
